There were reports that The Outer Worlds was off to a particularly strong start, but few could have expected the Obsidian developed role-playing game to sell quite this well: it’s finished second in the October 2019 NPD report for software sales in the United States. Only the might of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare could outperform it, which is already the best-selling game of 2019 to date. Of course.
This was a decent month for the American games industry, with a total of $1.03 billion spent across hardware and software categories. Naturally, the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 last year means that it’s down 34 per cent compared to 2018, but it’s not every year you get a new juggernaut from Rockstar Games, is it? We’ve included all of the relevant chart information below.

Not criticising the games at all, but I've really no idea how The Outer Worlds and Code Vein have done this well. They both seemed like fairly low-key releases to me.
@get2sammyb For an AA release, The Outer Worlds is an excellent game and has sold extremely well. And it did great being marketed under Take-Two with their insurmountable resources. It also helps that it was announced alongside the depressing mess that was Fallout 76, and its further demise has only served to catapult its hype further. I for one can't wait to see what they can do with a higher budget for a sequel.
@get2sammyb Even more impressive even you consider Outer Worlds was available via GamePass.
Very impressive performance from The Outer Worlds. Yet another great single player game untainted by bullsh*t business decisions that ends up being a hit. Who saw that one coming?
Imagine that just making a great game, selling it for one price and having it all complete and working at launch translating to commercial success.
@get2sammyb I get what you're saying but don't forget that games like Fallout have a huge fanbase and they would have been well aware of what this game was and when it was coming. Fallout 76 basically did all of its marketing and that subscription couldn't have been announced at a better time.
@get2sammyb I think both games served a purpose and were released at good times.
Code Vein is a souls-like game filling a gap in the market. It has more of an appealing art style for many people and seems easier to get into.
Outer Worlds is very appealing. Was largely a critical success. And it is filling a gap in the market left wide open by Bethesda’s failures.
Also it had great coverage at E3 and other places beforehand which is where it piqued my interest. Not to mention the massive amount of advertising. I’ve seen that game advertised on here a lot, not to mention adverts before videos on YouTube.
Maybe the marketing of Outer Worlds passed you by a bit?
Guess who regrets getting bought 😂
The Outer Worlds is great with a genuinely likeable cast of companions. It's like Friends, where you have a new favourite character every so often.
What, no Grand Theft.... oh wait it's there at number 14. And all is right in the world.
@BarefootBowser It appears the majority of sales for The Outer Worlds was on PS4, so I don’t see what GamePass has to do with that. If it wasn’t a multiplatform title released on PS4, sales would have been much lower.
@BarefootBowser In the UK sales were 78% on PS4 to 22% on Xbox, and this article seems to suggest Gamepass is the reason for such a lopsided result.

While it’s true that the PS4 has a larger install base, I’m pretty sure Xbox had full marketing rights for The Outer Worlds.
Actually, I forgot Pushsquare covered this as well:

I think the thing with the Outer Worlds is that it is relatively high profile multi platform western RPG that was promoted as being just that and it had a very good level of polish. When was the last time we actually had one of those?
I mean compare it with other major tentpole releases outside of Nintendo and this is one of the few big single player games released in this period.
@BrettAwesome we will never know fully now but I think it would have been the game to make them stable at least! they got bought because they were running out of money the same with Ninja Theory if MS did not buy the studio it would have gone bankrupt.
@David187
Yeah...If only they had known 😏
Are people really that stupid they bought that awfull ring fit game.
@get2sammyb Regarding TOW, it had HUGE word of mouth with the right community. Virtually every Bethesda-related channel brought it up in every Fallout 76 issue related video, both anticipation before release and "go play it instead" after release.
