It's fair to say that Death Stranding, at least initially, is a slow burn. Introduced to the United Cities of America, a list of concepts you can't quite wrap your head around, and Bridge Babies that connect with the land of the dead, it's a whole lot to take on at once. But as Hideo Kojima's trademark style of storytelling comes to the forefront the more you play, the wilder it gets. Narrative-wise, you're not going to find a more fascinating experience than Death Stranding this generation. Rivalling the plot of Metal Gear Solid, its final handful of chapters are something truly unforgettable.

4. God of War
BOY! Who would've thought that Santa Monica Studio could claw back any personality for Kratos, the angriest character in gaming history? With Cory Barlog leading the charge, not only is the latest God of War the best in the series, but it also tells the best story of the bunch, too. Humanising Kratos by way of his more compassionate son Atreus is a stroke of genius. The Ghost of Sparta has become the most likeable he's ever been, and that's thanks to an amazing adventure filled with great characters, set-pieces, and revelatory moments.
Unlike so many other games, Red Dead Redemption 2 is not afraid to let its characters breathe. For such a big blockbuster, the deliberate pacing can be off-putting, but by giving you the opportunity to get to know its cast of flawed characters, the pay-off is so much sweeter. As a prequel, you can easily predict where Arthur Morgan’s story is going, but Rockstar makes you care about each and every one of the Van Der Linde gang, as it embeds you in a changing turn-of-the-century world that is both beautiful and brutal.
The Witcher 3 may be set in a wide open world, but its scale doesn't stop it from telling some of the best -- if not the best -- stories on PS4, and that's a stunning achievement. Indeed, it's not just the main plot that Geralt's adventure relies on -- the entire release is stuffed with writing so good that it makes most other games blush. As if that wasn't enough, the title's two expansions are arguably even better at spinning an engrossing yarn. If you're looking for gripping and mature narratives, look no further than the PS4's greatest RPG.
The game which cemented Naughty Dog’s status as one of the industry’s greatest story-tellers, The Last of Us’ tale of parenthood is perhaps one of the most memorable narratives that the industry has ever seen. What truly makes the title standout, though – in addition to the outstanding performances by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson – is how it manages to marry gameplay to its fiction, enhancing the impact of its overall message. Pound for pound, this is still the best story on PlayStation.
