Last week, we hosted a poll following on from the latest PlayStation 5 info dump. We asked readers about the cost of the next-gen console, offering five different options ranging from below $300 to above $600. Over 1,800 of you voted, and you can see the results below.
As it turns out, 45 per cent of readers reckon the PS5 will be priced between $400 and $500 -- ourselves included, for what it's worth. Not a hugely surprising result given what we know about the system so far -- but could it realistically rise even higher than $500?
A not insignificant number of voters -- 39 per cent -- can see the console landing between $500 and $600, which, again, doesn't seem entirely out of the question given the PS5's known specifications. In any case, we think it's safe to say that the system will end up being priced between $400 and $600 -- it's just a question of whether it'll fall below or above $500.
Eurogamer.pt conducted a similar poll and found comparable results. 42 per cent of their readers said the PS5 will be priced at €499 -- that's around $550. Not many people are expecting this thing to be cheap, then.
Would you buy a PS5 at over $500? Place your bets on a precise PS4 price point in the comments section below.

Not one mention of £s?
I mean I'll gladly pay £500 but not to even have the conversation?
£479 with one controller and 3 months plus (which may or may not incorporate now) would be my guess. [I still stand by they will do a tiered system where bronze is online, silver is cloud storage and online, gold is online/storage/games and platinum is all of the above + now].
It could launch at any price - as long as its equal or less than Xbox or else it’s gonna be dead in the water. Look what happened to Xbox this gen and Sony at the start of last gen. The teenage buyer, or the parent don’t understand Backwards comparability or anything else. They just see price tag at Christmas time.
@ankehuber Unfortunately, there's a track record of dollar signs simply being switched for Sterling over here. Whatever it costs in greenbacks, it'll likely cost in quids, exchange rate be damned.
Still too expensive for me, but as I said in another article. I am not in a rush. Have plenty of PS4 games to play after all.
I am sure these polls will have a heeeeeeugeee influence on the pricing Sony has in mind!
I commented on the poll that I could see it be $449-$499, but over $500 isn't outside the realm of possibility.
Just buy psnow for 60$ a year. No more buying boxes for $500
im sure its gonna be over $500 at first.
I probably won't get one til it's more the £200-300 or so range if it does come out at around £400-£500 anyway.
As others have said I've got plenty on PS4 to get and I'm in no rush
499 euros for me.
I know that in dollars it's above 500 but Sony usually prices the console the same in Europe as in the US meaning if the console costs 499 dollars it will cost 499 euros despite the sum not being equal when converting.
So it's not that the Euro gamer voters are expecting it to be above 500 dollars they are just expecting it to be 499 euro's and thus 499 dollars.
I think launch lineup will be extremely important as well. I am okay with the price point if there is a must play game like Spiderman 2 or Horizon Zero Dawn 2 etc. Knack 3 won't sell consoles at this price, lol.
My guess is $499, €499, £449.
I think your reference point should be the launch price of the PS4, then decide if there are any reasons it could be cheaper or more expensive.
Reasons for more expensive could be:
Reasons for cheaper than launch PS4 could be:
I think these arguments cancel eachother out and think it will be priced equally to the PS4 launch price with maybe a 10% margin to it being more expensive. So I'd say €400-450.
Don't know why people are expected PS3 prices, remember how well that went? Specs don't really influence the price, as platform holders are often willing to take a loss initially. Heck, Sony orders in bulk, so it's impossible to know how much this thing will be, because it will always be cheaper for them than to build it ourselves.
My limit is $500, more than that then I’ll wait for a couple great exclusive first, day one if it’s $400 or $500
@Stragen8 to be fair the price wasn't the main issue the XB1 had, it's was the policies MS were trying to ship with it, the always online, the mandatory Kinect, the games being tied to account so no used game sales, those are what really killed it's launch
but what i find odd is people were complaining to the high hell about this but now people are lapping up services like Gamepass, Stadia and PSNow, which require a always online connection and are tied to your account things that just a few years ago they said they would never accept
just goes to show how a bit of clever advertising can affect a product doesn't it, say it one way and it's the end of gaming, say it another and its the greatest thing since sliced bread
Maybe next poll just have the prices rather than these big spreads that 99% of people don't think the price is going to be.
I mean as far as US goes anyway I'm pretty sure we're over here thinking it's either $399, $499, or $599. Nobody thinks it's anywhere between $301-$398 or $401-$498. Though I suppose there's always that 1 guy thinking $449 but nobody cares what that guy thinks.
Anyway polling groups shouldn't start and end with the same numbers. If somebody did think it's going to cost $500 are they supposed to pick $400-$500 or $500-$600?
It's a year out, I'm betting Sony doens't know how much it's going to cost yet in each territory. I'm sure they have plans, but not the final price, not in this crazy world with Brexit and tariffs.
And I'm sure any Canadians here are still stinging over the rise in prices 5 years back when everything seemed to jump in price overnight.
Here's a nice overview read for those curious.
https://business.financialpost.com/technology/gaming/playstation-4-price-going-up-by-50-in-canada
No big deal honestly. There's a whole year to save up for it, plenty of time no matter the cost really.
I'll get it day one no matter the cost. I've been saving.
My guess $549 CDN minimum
500$ is the way to go.i believe that will be the price.word up son
5 for the 5. Im day one regardless. Ps4 slowly becoming maybe my fav all time. Its right up there with the dreamcast, ps3 and snes for me
I plan on buying at least 1, day one.
The components and/or supported technologies in the PS5 sound high-end and expensive, and Sony talked about launching it as a niche product, so I really don't see it being under $599.99 at launch unless they're willing to lose a ton of money on each unit.
Honestly I almost wouldn't want it for sub $400. We were promised a monster "play it all" machine that could compete with high end PC's and that wouldn't be possible at $399 or $450.
I will gladly pay $600 if it is COMPLETELY (PS 1-5) backwards compatible. $400 if it's not.
I feel $599 or more will cause a big drop in sales. A lot of lower income people buy consoles. I will have to think hard on anything over $499. Not because I don't have the money but because of the 50%+ price hike.
The PS3 struggled when the console costed as much as it did at launch. I know I would have a difficult time justifying a 500$+ price at lauch when there's few games available for the system. The same happened when Sega released the Saturn for 399 instead of the PS1's 299.
@Ralizah I don't think Sony wants to mirror the PS3 when it comes to production costs
@jess3a3 But what will you play PS5 games on?
the launch price is not really my major concern, but what i'll be able to play on it. with all due respect, i doubt any of sony's major first party studios will be releasing titles on day 1, and third party stuff will be fairly predictable.. another assassin's creed snoozefest, more CoD and battlefield pew-pew, annual sports games.. i wouldn't pay £299 for that, never mind the £499 (at least) that i expect it to be. unless sony has some exclusive deals cooking with independent development studios to boost its launch line-up, i'll probably wait and get one later on.
My limit is $500 at launch . Hopefully it doesn't go beyond that .
a factor between PS4 and XB1 at the start of this gen, other than price and the always-online drm stuff, was that much fewer people bought games digitally, and i'd guess most gamers had disc-based games. the XB1 wouldn't play x360 discs, so xbox users had less to lose by switching. i think this time around, probably a significant share of PS4 users would have more to lose if they switched, due to backwards compatibility with most of your library.
i think the two next-gen consoles will be more or less the same price.
@Flurpsel I would really like this proof of ps4 making a loss? Sony already said they are done losing money on console launches and are making money on ps4 sales.
I Spent $600 on a fat 60G fully backwards compatible PS3 so I’m ready baby!!
I'll pay $500 but I think that's my cap. Hopefully there are some good launch titles, too. Looking forward to the game announcements!
I'm the same as everyone. I dont know what the launch price is going to be.
@Truthhurts2 at launch they lost money on hardware sales. Right now 6 years into its lifespan Im sure they can make a profit.
Ive read this multiple times and I think its believable enough. Ill admit I havent done any actual research into it
Edit: quick google search gave me a bunch of articles from 2013, just prior to the release of the ps4
https://www.geek.com/games/sony-will-sell-every-ps4-at-a-loss-but-easily-recoup-it-in-games-ps-plus-sales-1571335/
$500 is a steal.
$600 because inflation and trade war in China.
$400 is unrealistic but virtually guarantees a Sony next gen win.
It's incredible to know that someone voted on "less than $300".
@Netret0120 I was thinking the same thing $399 and the guarentee a next gen win (barring anything unpredictable). Then make those billions on ps plus...
@RogerRoger That's probably due to the UK including taxes in the shelf price and the US adding that at the counter.
For example, something that costs $100 before tax would cost £75 before tax, but with VAT added it'd come closer to the £100 mark, but we rarely see prices without that tax already added.
@Mintie True. Now recalling a rather embarrassing incident I once had in New York because I didn't understand the whole "add tax at the till" thing... yeah, that's likely it!
@jess3a3 Last I checked, you will still need a PS5 to play PS5 games.
You can't just use PSNow to play PS5 games on a PS4, that's impossible.
They can make it 600, I'll still buy it day one lmaooo. If prefer it lands between 4-500.
