Most video game genres can translate well to a streaming service if you've got a good enough connection, but there's one type of experience that is always going to suffer no matter what. Fighting games, especially when played competitively, rely on frame-perfect combo moves and intricate playstyles the further up you go, and any amount of lag is going to be a detriment to that. It's unplayable for professional players, and it looks like Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono agrees.
During a panel at EGX 2019, the Capcom figurehead said that if a fighting game were to take advantage of streaming services, it would need to be built from the ground up for it. "The thing is that the current games are only transmitting the actual inputs and commands across the network and all the graphics and so forth are handled locally, even then we have difficulty getting it working right." Ono then goes on to state that doing Street Fighter V on the likes of Google Stadia would be too difficult at the current level.
"If we could create a game that was designed from the ground up to be put out on of these streaming platforms, that might be more feasible in the future." He then goes on to comically coin the term "Stream Fighter" before wrapping up the panel.

I play Street Fighter IV from time to time on my Nvidia Shield and I actually found it to be a pretty decent experience overall, atleast when playing arcade.
I’m more casual but I do throw down in online matches for fighting games from time to time. Lag really sucks and can definitely ruin the mood for fighting games and Street Fighter V net code isn’t exactly the best that’s for sure. Far from it.
Yeah I’m a big fan of rhythm games and I do agree that certain genres just don’t play well with lag or latency. I’m sure that they’ll come up with some fancy innovation to solve this problem though, they always do.
More on PS Now is never a bad thing. But one more thing i cant stand stripped too the bare fighters without a simple thing like a arcademode. Or 50% of the roster behind paywalls especially fan favorites.
Streaming is trash period. Just look at the Xcloud tests. All these streaming services will flop.
Im waiting on a fighting revamp. 1v1 for 30 years.... surely somebody can make something different. Maybe I just want a power stone game lol
For most people I don't think this is an issue at all.
And for online play, games should actually benefit from being streamed as in theory it would be easier to establish one connection to the same game rather than how it works now.
I haven't played an online game yet that doesn't lag from time to time. I think that may start to change soon if developers use streaming technology to their advantage.
No competitive player will ever use streaming for fighting games lol
It's sad that the word stream is nowadays immediately associated with transmitting video/audio data rather than being a narrow river.
I'm getting old.
Killer Instinct works very very well on Xcloud and Tekken works great (offline at least) on PS now. I'm sure if a game was built with streaming in mind from the foundation it would work similarly well
