With a full team creation suite and entertaining local multiplayer options, this may be more your jam if you don’t know your pinch hits from your at bats.
Codemasters’ intensely hardcore rally simulation returns for another race, with licensed content from the FIA World Rallycross Championship. Punishingly lifelike physics and a new weather modelling system mean that you’ll need to have perfect focus in order to podium, but the range of vehicles and tracks mean that mastering DiRT Rally 2.0 is a rewarding endeavour.

Madden NFL 20 really does have the X-Factor, thanks to the addition of personality traits which elevate American football’s biggest stars above their peers. Visual and gameplay refinements along with an uber-addictive edition Ultimate Team mean that EA’s second most popular sports series touches down comfortably – just try not to punt on those pricey microtransactions.
There’s no Skate 4 on the PS4 (yet) and the less said about Tony Hawk the better, which means that Roll7’s OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood is just about your only real skateboarding option this generation. Fortunately, the sequel’s stick flicking controls feel just as tactile as in the original, and with more combo options and challenges than ever before, working your way through this two-dimensional title is anything but a grind.
NBA 2K19 feels great when you’re out on the court, it’s just severely hampered by 2K Sports’ inability to rein in its ridiculous microtransactions. The basketball sim’s campaign mode has another entertaining story-driven Prelude, but once you reach the series’ iconic Neighbourhood, its demands for real-world cash do begin to grate. Nevertheless, there’s tons to do here; from building your own unbeatable squad in MyTeam through to managing an entire franchise in MyGM, this could theoretically keep you occupied all the way through until next year’s entry.
