Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom
Release Date: 24th Jan 2017 (USA) / 24th Jan 2017 (UK/EU)

Capcom’s first-person survival horror can be played on a television and is a great fun in that format, but the Bakers’ nightmarish guest house really comes to life when you pop the PSVR headset on. Virtual reality adds an unrivalled sense of scale to the abandoned outhouses and underground caverns that the game sees you sneak through, and running into the six-foot plus psychotic patriarch Jack Baker is an even more harrowing experience when he’s physically towering over you.

Publisher: Beat Games / Developer: Beat Games
Release Date: 20th Nov 2018 (USA) / 20th Nov 2018 (UK/EU)

Arguably the coolest game in virtual reality, Beat Saber transforms you into a lightsaber wielding composer, as you cut through bricks to the sound of electro pop hits. While the PSVR version doesn’t have the same extendable capabilities of its PC-based counterpart, it’s still a must-own title that will have you sweating and smiling for hours on end.

3. Tetris Effect (PS4)

Tetris Effect (PS4)Tetris Effect (PS4)
Publisher: Enhance Games / Developer: Enhance Games
Release Date: 9th Nov 2018 (USA) / 9th Nov 2018 (UK/EU)

Rez Infinite may well have been the warm up, but Tetris Effect is the true epiphany. Tetsuya Mizuguchi once again demonstrates his mastery over audiovisual entertainment, transforming an ancient Russian puzzler into a euphoric out-of-body experience. While it’s playable without virtual reality and intensely entertaining on a standard screen, the release really shines with the added immersion that PSVR provides.

Publisher: SUPERHOT Team / Developer: SUPERHOT Team
Release Date: 21st Jul 2017 (USA) / 19th Jul 2017 (UK/EU)

SUPERHOT VR may be stripped of the unnerving narrative that makes its flat-screen counterpart so compelling, but it makes up for any shortcomings through sheer gameplay satisfaction. While it occasionally pushes the PlayStation Move technology a little too hard, this time manipulating arcade experience is so sublimely satisfying that there was no other place for it on our list than right near the top. A frankly outstanding achievement.

1. Astro Bot Rescue Mission (PS4)

Astro Bot Rescue Mission (PS4)Astro Bot Rescue Mission (PS4)
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: SCE Japan Studio
Release Date: 3rd Oct 2018 (USA) / 3rd Oct 2018 (UK/EU)

Japan Studio has refined the potential teased in The Playroom VR with the staggering Astro Bot Rescue Mission, a virtual reality platformer spread across 20 fantasy levels. By building its stages around you in 360-degrees and stereoscopic 3D, the title manages a level of immersion impossible on a standard display, all the while delivering best in class gameplay and some of the most charming art you’ll find on the PS4 full-stop. A sensationally strong effort from Sony’s increasingly impressive Team Asobi division.

We reckon these are the best PSVR games, then, with honourable mentions going to the likes of Battlezone, Star Trek: Bridge Crew, and so many more. But what are your favourite virtual reality releases thus far and why? Step into a different dimension in the comments section below.
