No one could've predicted it, but yesterday, THQ Nordic revealed SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, a remaster of the PlayStation 2 platformer. The game has a bit of a cult hit status, as fans of the cartoon series hold it in high regard. While we were quick to assume this would be a simple resolution bump, it's starting to sound like there could be a little more to it than that.
On the game's Steam page, THQ Nordic describes the game as a "faithful remake" of the original, with "high-end visuals, modern resolutions and carefully polished gameplay". As hinted at in the reveal teaser's video description, Rehydrated will include multiplayer. This comes in the form of a co-op horde mode for two players, either online or local. Even more interesting is the promise of restored cut content from the original release, such as the "Robo Squidward boss fight".
It might be an odd choice of game to bring back, but it looks like Purple Lamp Studios is putting in a decent effort. Are you looking forward to playing Battle for Bikini Bottom on PS4 next year? Is mayonnaise an instrument? Hibernate until release in the comments below.

Missed this one at the time, but SpongeBoB's a 20th Century god so I'll definitely give it a whirl.
This game was on PS2 and I remember my cousin playing it like it was yesterday. Good times
Owned it on Gamecube back in the days, and loved it!!! Since the show won't be getting anymore new episodes, this is a nice addition to the growing PS4 collection, as my kids love these type of games (Paw Patrol On A Roll and Hotel Transylvania 3 show it for them). Will definitely pick it up to add! Been a while! Don't know why this one in particular is a cult hit, but it's definitely a fun one in the series! Hopefully they re-release the others, even if it goes through the Playstation Store!
...a Spongebob game, though.
I've watched footage, and it... looks like a pretty standard licensed game from the PS2 era.
I feel like the love this gets is some sort of weird inside joke I missed the bus on.
@Ralizah It’s a really well done Banjo/Spyro type clone with all of the early season Spongebob charm intact. Went above and beyond the usual licensed game problems in terms of level design, polish, and faith to the source material and it kinda earned it that cult classic status.
No joke, this might be one of my most anticipated games this year.
@Sakisa Huh.
Well, good to hear it's not purely the internet meme-ing something stupid into popularity.
I don't think I can get past the subject matter of the game, but I hope you enjoy it.
