It looks like Sony is set to shake up its party chat function in a big way, as the platform holder has announced a new update to its preview program that will double the number of participants a room can hold.
Alongside an increase from eight participants to 16, member of the preview program will get the chance to test improved audio quality for voice chat and better network connectivity. You'll only be able to get a 16 player party chat going with other participants in the program, but with the ability to share the code that provides you with this update to 20 friends, that's no big deal.
One feature exclusive to the US as part of the patch is chat transcription, available through the PS4 itself or via a smartphone. This will convert voice chat into text, or you could write something in the chat which will then be converted into voice for the party to hear. A neat idea that we're sure some people will get good use out of.
Signs ups for the preview program will be coming soon, so will you be trying to nab a code at the first opportunity? Try and convince us you've got 15 friends on PS4 who'd be willing to join these rather loud party chats in the comments below.

LOL. It's really hard for me to even get TWO friends at the same time to play Apex Legends...how would I get 20 friends ahah
Yeah, same here. I have 2 IRL friends with a PS4 and neither have PS+. I have a few more online friends but we don't actually play anything.
I guess somebody must be using this kind of feature, though.
About time. I run league lobbies in GTS, having 16 player chat would be rather be beneficial
Can see this been very useful for clans and such but the most I ever have in a party is 3.
I don't have a personal need, but I think this can benefit some certain individuals and situations

If the chat transcription service also includes a robust translator to bridge the communication gap, it’d be awesome.
Bloody hell, eight is bad enough....
Wouldnt mind you being able to drop the sound of individuals, always one whose gob is just too big... but ya cant mute them as ya playing together...
I can think of nothing worse of having more than one person in a party blaring modern mumble rap music in the background.
I play monster hunter world with a large group from discord we constantly have two full parties and some times a third this would be awesome don't know how they'll deal with people talking over each
Anymore than 4 or 5 in a party always seems to lead to chaos and I really wouldn't want to be in a party of 10 or more goofballs. I'd probably end up breaking the mute function.
I def need this feature. My friends and I are always struggling to be in the same party
