No E3? No problem! We've been wondering for a while what Sony will do this year since it's not at the Los Angeles expo, and here's your answer. As many predicted, the Japanese giant will be hosting a series of live broadcasts, the first of which is only a few days away, on the 25th March. It begins at 14:00 Pacific, so that's 21:00 UK time.
According to the company, these 'State of Play' (nice name) showcases will highlight PlayStation 4 announcements and updates. On paper it sounds similar to what Xbox has been doing with its Inside Xbox episodes, but we're sure that the hype is about to go overboard and people will quickly pump their expectations to extreme levels.
For reference, the official press release reads: "State of Play will give you updates and announcements from the world of PlayStation. Our first episode will showcase upcoming PS4 and PS VR software, including new trailers, new game announcements and new gameplay footage."
Does this sound like a good angle for Sony to take? Please don't go expecting PS5 news in the comments section below.

No PS5 will not be announced yet. Also we likely will not see any of the "Big 3" until after Days Gone releases. still should be fun to watch.
This is likely an opportunity to announce some smaller games (PS VR etc) updates on certain titles like Dreams is early access date. Maybe even firmware updates too. If going forward they do this for that stuff but have PSX for the biggest announcements then I'm cool with it.

Its about time Sony have been very quiet since E3 would be nice to see some of concrete genie and some VR stuff like Everybodys golf VR and Blood and Truth
Should be cool, but let's keep our expectations in the realms of reality. There are unlikely to be any megatons or fireworks here.

I expect blood and truth will get a release date and dreams early access as well. Maybe a date for PSN name changes as well.

Im all for it. Several of these a year means they can do them in their own time. Rather than waiting until E3 for any big announcements. They can also react accordingly to changes in the market.
I also like that they specifically say it's PS4 and PSVR announcements at the first State of Play. I think they've been very clever with this.

@roe yeah, I double checked as I start work at 10pm. Hopefully it doesn't go longer than 45 mins so I can catch it all live.
Finally, the fact that all three gaming overlords now have regular(ish) shows with various updates and annuncements is great news in my opinion. Was wondering what was taking Sony so long to have one.

Maybe we will get some news related to the big 3 after a few episodes.
I do however expect the game reveal of bluepoint in the first couple of episodes maybe even the first one to kick things off nice.

I like this approach. I wonder how frequent the events will be. Monthly seems unlikely, and biannually seems to sparse. Quarterly perhaps, culminating with PSX in Q4?
You know what I miss from the start of this generation? The auctions/raffles for gear from the PlayStation commercials. Those were cool.

@Octane Yeah, I actually thought it might be something like that while I was typing. I have a wife. My wife and I watched the whole show live starting w/ season 4, we binged 1-3 just before that, but we started rewatching w/ my son Christmas break as we thought he was old enough now, turned 16 in September. We watched S7 ep 1 on Wed, but he had to do homework last night, which was kind of annoying. We'll probably watch 2 eps tonight and tomorrow night, 1 Sunday and Monday. Then the 3 week wait. Which is better than 2 years. This is on at 5PM for me so I don't have to worry about postponing GOT.

While I don't pay much attention to the PS side of news these days (as more and more stuff comes to Switch while less and less stuff seems safe to expect a manageable RP control scheme from - even Spider-Man, one of the latest exclusives I've been eyeing in particular), I welcome our new PlayStation Direct overlords.

I know Sony is staying out of E3, as far as participating on the show floor and having a conference, but I wonder if they will have one of these E3 week? They would remain in the conversation at least, and still communicate directly with gamers like Layden mentioned a few months ago.

As for "State of Play" I have few expectations as I'm not really sure what to expect. Everybody keeps saying 'Nintendo Direct" only those are well edited pre-recorded segments. Nintendo does Treehouse Live but I've always thought those sucked for the most part. So this could be anything. It could be all bragging about the numbers, knocking their competition for failure, making fun of Stadia. I don't even know whos' hosting it? Sony big wigs or some "social influencing" Youtubers. I suppose I am expecting something - much cringe.
As for games - nothing new, this isn't a Direct - some dates, more gameplay for RAD, Dreams, Concrete Genie. I'm just going in with no expectations, just hoping it's short. If people are mostly talking badly about it after ti's over - too Nintneod, too much talking, not enough games, too yawn inducing - that's a problem. Fingers crossed.

I was at their concert in Central Park in '81, along w/ pretty much everyone else in NYC. 😁 After the concert a throng of us walked down some stree for blocks, building to building, w/ police scattered along the way, but they never interfered, adn we finally just all dispersed. If we did that nowadays we'd probably get tear gassed and peppered sprayed. 😛
