Apex Legends has become a phenomenon overnight, but every inch of its success has been earned. Respawn Entertainment’s brilliant take on the Battle Royale lobs in a squad-based hero shooter twist, which is just enough to set it apart from its many contemporaries on the PS4. Rock-solid shooting and some smart design decisions – such as the implementation of the Ping system, which improves communication – make this one of the strongest surprise hits in recent memory.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege is another PS4 FPS that's been massively improved over time. It remains extremely popular, and that's thanks to Ubisoft's constant updates and tweaks, resulting in a hyper polished experience. Online matches pit defenders against attackers, with each player on a team taking up a variety of different roles. Each role has different weapons, gadgets, and equipment that has them suited to various tasks. If you like a bit of strategy in your shooters, there's no better option.

We couldn't not mention Fortnite, right? The Battle Royale aspect of Epic's shooter is played by an eye-watering number of players, and remains the free-to-play game of choice on PS4. Throwing in basic crafting alongside the last man standing mentality, this cartoonish shooter is a phenomenon, and a blast with friends.
Overwatch is PS4's best hero shooter by a mile, and remains a popular online multiplayer title. Each of the characters has its own weapons and abilities to utilise during objective-based modes, and it's a joy to play, particularly with friends. If you're looking for an online shooter to play with pals, this should be your first stop.
It's been around for several years now, but Rocket League is still the king of online multiplayer on PS4. Fantastic netcode and a huge pool of players means getting a game is a breeze, and while the gameplay can take a while to learn, it's so satisfying to get right.
