Another day, another PS5 rumour. A somewhat obscure website address has been discovered, and it's caught the internet's attention for a couple of reasons. The domain is playstation5.pro, which of course refers to Sony's next gen console. However, if you visit the domain, it'll redirect you to the official PlayStation website.
Some have assumed this means Sony is buying up PS5 related domain names simply to lay claim to them before anyone else has the chance, and while that's possible, playstation5.pro could have been registered by someone else -- anyone can buy a domain, after all. It's a bit of a strange one, this. We imagine Sony will be conscious of this sort of thing, but as far as we can tell, the platform holder doesn't seem to have ownership over any obvious PS5 domains.
Anyway, we wouldn't read too much into this -- chalk it up as a rumour for now.

OK I'll ask - is .pro a real domain ending? I know the world has moved on from .com and .edu but is .pro a legitimate domain Sony would pick for the PS5, a PS5 Pro is probably like 4 or 5 years away right now, or is it short for some nation I'm unaware of? All I can hink of is Portugal but that probably isn't .pro. Do Canadian provinces have their own domain? Quebec.pro?
let me go grab a tinfoil hat then
@rjejr that's what i thought about aswell.
all i can think of that it could mean project since this site is still in it's early stages from what i can read.
but i know that doesn't make any sense at all.
Sony will skip ps5 and will go straight to ps5 pro
could just be a joke tbh.
like that fake rumor that there would be a ps5 meeting on the 20th.
heck this domain could have been made by the same person to try to give some credit to that fake rumor.
either that or that meeting is a real thing and sony is preparing a site for it. (just imagine)
@jdv95 Yeah .pro could work for .project I suppose, the pseudo equivalent of Google Docs. I used to follow all of the tech stuff, then I sort of just stopped caring. Thanks for the idea.
I still really feel like there is a good chance Sony will drop the numbering from here on out and just have a PlayStation that maintains backwards compatibility with software as they release new, more powerful hardware, like phones do.
@kyleforrester87 I think they will still number them, it's a simple way for everyone to differentiate the models even if they are compatible. iPhones are still numbered (for the most part). It's definitely better than Microsoft's confusing naming.
@BearsEatBeets I agree, in the sense they need to be able to distinguish between models, but like on the back of your iPhone it just says “iPhone” regardless of the number.. I could see something similar happening with PlayStation. Who knows, just a feeling I’ve got, but I’m first to admit I’m rarely correct with this stuff. It makes me the perfect video game analyst, actually 😂
@kyleforrester87 You should start your own YouTube channel, accuracy is rarely important. It will be interesting to see how long people can keep creating all these rumours, it's my opinion the official reveal is still several months to a year away.
Registrar: Shanghai Meicheng Technology Information Development Co., Ltd
@BearsEatBeets it’s always like this on the run up to a new hardware announcement to be fair - it’s all part of the fun!
@kyleforrester87 I literally just seen a fun one on YouTube, I was recommended a video of a PS5 tech demo. I'm sure it's totally genuine, don't know how all the websites missed it.
@rjejr - yes, .pro is a real top-level domain. the original list that included .com, .org, .net, etc. (as well as country-level domains like .uk, .nl, .de) was expanded some years back, there's about a thousand of them now. .pro was intended to be for professional(s)/services, but i think registration is unrestricted now.
At the bottom of the .pro page it has a copyright Mark dated 2017 however on the official Sony or PlayStation.com website the copyright Mark is dated 2019.
Maybe someone made this a few years back and just forgot about it either that or whoever made it has made an error and should have put the disclaimer to 2019 lol
Man this is gonna be a long year for us looking forward to PS5 lol.
The PlayStation5.pro page is not using https so I doubt it's anything official from Sony.
My guess is that someone just made an html clone of the page at www.playstation.com/country-selector/, albeit from a 2017 © version. 😉
@rjejr and there you have it! This is what I was trying to mean (?!? Lol) in the first place! Do a Microsoft and release two version the ps5 and the ps5 pro. Let’s say the rumours about the 5’s specs are true, which would mean the pro would be 12 or more TFLOPS for sure, 20G of ram and the cpu and gpu being even more than what is rumored now yes? And so on and so forth? And at a price of 450/530? There’s my day one purchase........
@wiiware cos ps5 maybe weaker than the next “big daddy” Xbox.....
@Quintumply I know this is pedantic, but it is not a redirection. A redirection would change the URL in your browser. Also both domains don't point to the same IP address.
@MikLSP Well spotted. Either a fake or a test website for Sony.
@Kiloman74 But it destroys in sales. 😁
Nintendo will overtake the Xbox i think its all about the games. And so much different titles on the PS4.
