Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4)

One of the most anticipated remakes of all time, Square Enix finally brought us Final Fantasy VII Remake, the first part in a multiple game project. Taking the beloved JRPG and totally modernising the presentation and gameplay, this game takes place entirely in the vast city of Midgar as we're reintroduced to Cloud and the crew. With an overhauled battle system, some wonderful visuals, and fully voiced characters, this is an ambitious remake to satisfy old and new fans.

WipEout Omega Collection (PS4)

What is a PlayStation console without WipEout? Bundling together two previous games in the franchise, plus one meaty expansion, into a single anti-gravity racing dream, Omega Collection’s VR Mode is worth the price of admission alone if you happen to have a PlayStation VR headset. Between courses, ships, and that all-important soundtrack, this is the definitive WipEout package.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection (PS4)

Bringing together two games (Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel) that were already stuffed with content, supplemented with a wealth of DLC and visuals as sharp as Claptrap’s wit? Handsome indeed. Borderlands’ mix of RPG and FPS is just as satisfying today, and the sheer amount of loot involved will keep you playing for days, with or without co-op partners.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (PS4)

You could argue that Capcom could (and probably should) have done more with this remaster, but there's just no denying how great Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is. Underappreciated on PS3, this is a deserved second chance on PS4, as the game is still one of the best action RPGs on the market. What's more, the remaster doesn't suffer from the annoying frame rate drops of the original release, making it the best way to experience Dragon's Dogma on consoles.

Resident Evil 2 (PS4)

Arguably the new gold standard for remakes, Resident Evil 2 plays as a simultaneous homage and
remix of the original. Racoon City remains dangerous, yet strangely familiar. While vastly improved
controls make combat more manageable, that doesn’t mean you’ll be firing your gun as much as
you would be in the series’ later entries - this is still very much survival horror, and there are few
that have done it better.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (PS4)

Stuffed with extra content, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (try saying that three times fast) features not only two of the most beloved action RPGs in history, but also Re:Chain of Memories from the Game Boy Advance, and Birth By Sleep from the PSP. The game hasn’t aged as gracefully as others on this list, but there is undeniable magic here and, of course, a huge sequel to dive into.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (PS4)

Taking three games from the nineties and dragging them kicking and screaming into the “Fur-K” era, the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is beautiful but challenging. There’s also plenty of variety: whether you’re being chased by a boulder, sliding around on the back of a polar bear, or jumping through time to grab crystals, Crash has never looked or played better.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered (PS4)

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was a fantastic arcade racer back in 2010, and it remains as much in this remaster on PS4. Developed by Criterion, this is a cops n' racers game about driving exotic cars through long, sweeping roads for some epic chases — whichever side of the law you're on. It features a great garage of licensed cars, dozens of events to conquer, and lots of ways to compete with friends. The remaster boosts the resolution and performance, and adds a livery editor and photo mode to boot.

Yakuza: Kiwami 2 (PS4)

Using the amazing looking Dragon Engine of Yakuza 6, Yakuza: Kiwami 2 is a brilliant remake of Yakuza 2. The PS2 original very much cemented the series as something special, and Kiwami 2 recaptures that magic effortlessly. Content-rich and with a story that's still top tier, this is one of the best remakes that the PS4 has to offer.

The Last of Us Remastered (PS4)

The PS3’s swansong is harrowing, emotional, and brutal. If you haven’t played through it yet, this is the definitive version of The Last of Us – replete with HDR colours and the excellent Left Behind DLC. And if you have, it’s still worth playing through again. PS4 Pro owners can experience every horrific clicker, every gory stealth kill, and every gut-wrenching and emotional moment in 4K.
