All there was and all there will be is...God of War.
And btw god of war has surpassed zelda botw in total awards with GoW having 190 while zelda has 189.
God of Awards.
God of war is the best surprise of 2018, congrats ssm, can't wait for part 2 on ps5
Yeah, I'm definitely curious how they're going to tackle the next entry. Can't wait for that one!
It's great that a PlayStation exclusive has won so many but I can't help but feel that RDR2 has been criminally overlooked in a lot of these categories.
Arrogant Sony Studios, bringing world class single player exclusives, winning multiple awards year after year.
"Single player games are dead!" - E.A.
Wish Detroit had won at least one award.
I can understand Art Direction because its fackin beautiful, but definitely not Story and GOTY, RDR2 is way better in that aspect. GOW had like 5 characters the entire game with a bare bones story.
I haven't played RDR2 but I expected it to get more awards after seeing the critical acclaims.
Also I am glad Celeste got some awards. Such a beautiful game.
best game ever. 👑 king kratos.the man the icon the legend. the g.o.a.t word up son
Still not played GOW yet due to a huge backlog but fully intend on doing so. As someone who's not played it yet can I ask why is it so much better than previous GOW games?
@Hapuc n.i.c.e that's very interesting god of war passes Zelda. god of war is the best game ever.word life. word is bond.word up son
@ApostateMage
I agree but, hey Outstanding Achievement in Achievement is something.
I certainly think that other games were 'better' than God of War in some categories - I don't know why RDR2 wasn't nominated in Outstanding Achievement in Game Design as GoW is rather old school in it's design - not that that is a 'bad' thing necessarily.
That being said though, I do think a very good case for GoW can be made in all of those categories and so its not as if it was an unreasonable or surprising win. I may of given other games a win in those categories but GoW would of come in a close 2nd but that would be my opinion.
There were more surprising wins in some of the other categories but then we all have differing opinions and so we must respect their choices and other peoples opinion.
Congratulations to God of War and the team behind it.
@Dange
Its difficult to say 'so much better' because better is a subjective thing after all. Id say its very different mainly in combat, less mash button. Kratos is also more balanced emotionally, is the way Id put it haha. A more attaching character.
To sum up the game is more grounded.
@TheArt for reference, you can watch nakeyjakey's (youtuber) assessment on RDR2, maybe it will give you an Idea of why it didnt win GOTY
@Amplified I think he should also watch my assessment on GOW and get an idea why it isn't GOTY because opinions.
The game and the people who worked hard developing the game deserve all the credit around! Absolute masterpiece!
@TheArt well you know my opinion on these games but I'm going to shock and say that even I believe that Red Dead Redemption 2 deserved a few of these awards over God of War, certainly story and character if nothing else
@BAMozzy I'm surprised RDR2 didn't win a few more but I can see why it's not in the game design award as it largely sticks to the template set out in the PS2 GTA games. Granted it looks a lot prettier and their storytelling has improved no end but it still largely boils down to go to the yellow dot and do the thing when told and as told. This is probably my biggest disappointment as the missions felt far too rigid and at odds with the quite stunning open world. I know I've moaned about this game but I do genuinely think it is a very good game and will return to it and with a bit more freedom could really have been one of the very best
Then again God of War is largely Zelda with a bit of light rpg work and Spiderman was nominated so it probably should have been there
@carlos82 Yea story and Arthur definitely. Weeks after I beat RDR2, I kept thinking about Arthur and the whole gang and it would get me down a bit, you usually feel sad when the credits roll right then, but weeks past I was still feeling it. I mean the guy just wanted better lives for a whole lot of people.
God of War Game of the Gen player. Word up, son!!
This is why I laugh at all the Sony haters. Some of the best gaming experiences available for the last few generations. And with Crackdown 3 sitting at a Metacritic score of 62, reaffirmation that PlayStation is the place to play.
@carlos82 The point I was referring to with RDR2 was the fact that the game feels 'alive' with progression over time rather than 'static' with a superficial day/night cycle and 'moderately' impactful weather.
What I mean by that is that instead of characters working all day on building a barn, day after day after day, it never progresses over time. I know games like H:ZD, AC and Witcher 3 all have people that go about their daily chores during day-time hours - but they are endlessly chopping wood, building a barn etc.
The NPC's are aware of you too in RDR2, your reputation, the way you look etc. I know H:ZD changed dialogue depending on your armour choice but so many characters are just filler to make the world look more populated, no interaction possible at all.
What RDR2 have managed to achieve in gaming is astonishing compared to GTA (although that was built for last gen), Witcher 3 etc. I don't say that lightly as the Witcher 3 is certainly a Game of the Generation contender let alone just for the year. If anything, the attention to detail, right down to the animations and passage of time (which maybe too repetitious and realistic for a 'game' for some) is still an amazing achievement. I know that by the 20th time of going through the animation of searching a dead body for any loot may get tedious because of the time it takes up but the animation of it is still incredible. Its all those little nuances and details that I think deserves the Outstanding Achievement in Game Design.
God of War is so old school in much of its design. Its a typical single path route where any deviation of that path leads to a dead end with treasure (so you have to go back to the path) or a loop with treasure that leads back to the path. That's really old school design. Even the 'open world' Lake of Nine is literally bays with puzzles/treasure or a cave to load up the next area which is either a 'single path' or a BIG loop that eventually leads back to the boat with either Story or Side quest reason to visit - of course there is treasure/puzzles too. The story is quite old school in the way that you reach a 'dead end' and then have to go and get the 'tool' to progress - which also opens up treasure so you can go back to collect. Progress a bit further until you come up to another dead-end that requires a tool to progress so you have to go and acquire that. Some of the areas are just 'filler' for just repetitive combat - either in challenge arenas or a timed circuit.
Don't get me wrong, I did quite enjoy GoW, (I got the Platinum in 4 or 5 days) and think it was well executed, good story and relatively well acted by some of the cast. Its certainly deserved to be nominated and recognised as one of the best games of 2018 but the 'best', I didn't think so but that is just my opinion and some will perhaps agree (maybe not here on a PS site), others probably not.
I have no issue with any of the results, any of the decisions - even if I don't necessarily agree with their choices. At the end of the day, their opinion is just 'different' and I will defend their and anyone else's right to have a different opinion. Even have a different viewpoint of GoW to the way I described it above - that is just their viewpoint and equally as valid as mine.
@lacerz All it reaffirms for me is that Sony have the better exclusives and that their Developers are making the critically superior games right now. Its understandable with so many more developers and developers with a 'long' history in which to hone their craft compared to MS - at least up until MS woke up and decided to increase their portfolio of Studio's to try and catch up.
As far as the 'best' place to play, that is a different matter. MS clearly as the 'best' place to play at the top end market, but also the worst at the bottom end of the market. Its a two-tier system at the moment with base models at the bottom end (or most popular if you consider sales) in terms of hardware specs and the mid-gen consoles at the top end. Its not surprising that MS has both the best and Worst as games are very dependent on Hardware to get the 'best' out of them - best as in most consistent and/or highest frame rate for the 'smoothest' playing experience as well as 'best' in visual Quality too.
In basically every comparison, the Base Xbox generally comes out the worst place to play - worst frame rate AND/OR visual quality. On occasion, it may beat base PS4 on Frame Rate (see Kingdom Hearts 3) but the Visual quality is significantly worse as a result. However at the top end, the Xbox X generally offers the best Frame Rates AND/OR Visual Quality - unsurprisingly die to the significantly better GPU and RAM and slightly better CPU.
In general, people buy more 3rd party multi-platform games in a year with maybe 1 or 2 Exclusives. I am FULLY aware of the fact that Sony's GoW, Spider-Man and Detroit are 'superior' games to Forza Horizon 4 (although this is an award winning title), Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2. I know which games collectively I would prefer, but I would swap Detroit for Forza. Collectively Sony easily beat MS on Exclusives both in terms of quality and numerically (I expect) BUT not necessarily the 'best' place to play 3rd party multi-platform releases. If PC is included, then its no contest but as far as consoles go, the Xbox X is the 'best' place to play the 'majority' of games released with the PS4 being the best for Exclusives - that's not just me saying this but all the technical analysis and superior hardware. Its superior hardware that gives PS4 the edge over the base Xbox too so its no surprise that the X beats all other consoles as the 'best' place to play the majority of games.
God of War is my game of the generation. I’m really happy that is the most acclaimed game of the last year, and it looks like of the generation as well because it has more than 190 GOTY awards.
Santa Monica and Sony really deserve all the praise. The sequel on PS5 already is my most anticipated game.
God of Awards indeed.
Its really heart-breaking that Assassins Creed Odyssey was not nominated for game of the year. This is an awesome game and best Assassins Creed. It deserves the respect for its huge open world, great story, impressive combat and lot of content.
@TheArt LOL How is RDR2 better in that regards when it comes to GOTY? You can compare graphics to see which looks better. But that isn't something you can quantify. Anyway GOW had more then five characters. It had ten actually. What does the amount of characters have to do with how good a story is? Also GOW didn't have a bare-bones story. I'm starting to think you didn't even play GOW.
