Save for some pesky rumours over the weekend, Respawn's Apex Legends came out of absolutely nowhere, and is already making a splash in the battle royale scene. This free-to-play FPS from the Titanfall developer was both announced and released yesterday, and it's made a promising start, having amassed one million unique players in less than eight hours.
It's an impressive statistic that bodes well for the game. Despite some dashed hopes of a Titanfall 3, there seems to be lots of positive buzz surrounding this surprise release. Have you played Apex Legends yet? What are your thoughts on Respawn's latest? Fire away in the comments below.

Free tends to do that.
Watched some videos, it's disappointing the gameplay graphics aren't like the stylish cel-shaded one in the launch trailer.
I tried to find it in the store and couldn't. So downloaded Rocket League instead for the umpteenth time.
Free does that, people will check it out, there will be some buzz for a short time but then no one will talk about it.
Its going to take a lot to stand out and survive in the already saturated battle royale market, can't see this one doing anything special.
Free to play so guessing that means every ps4 user can play. Not just PlayStation Plus members. Gonna check this out.
as others have said of course it will have a strong start as its free!
I actually really like it after spending a few hours with it. I'm glad I gave it a try.
For anyone who has played both, how silar is this to Titanfall in terms of gunplay? I really like the sound and feel of the weapons but being a BR game not exactly a ton of shooting most times. Though playing it does have me interested in TF2
I love how upset people on here get about Battle Royale games.
Your anger sustains me.
1 million over 8hrs - I assume across multiple platforms (Xbox, PS4 and PC?) where there must be over 100m gamers so less than 1% trying a 'free' game...
I am not saying its 'bad' or that the game is bad, the test for MP games is always 'how many players are still playing after a month, after 2 months etc. I am sure that Titanfall had a BIG pool of players for the first week or two but the numbers dropped quickly. By the time the first DLC dropped, the game was only being played by stragglers. On PC, they removed a mode or two because numbers weren't high enough to offer the range of modes. It wasn't as if the MP was overall bad and played well - some decisions were a bit off but overall the game was decent yet most people went back to older FPS games (Ghosts, BF4 etc). Point is, it didn't do enough to keep the population of gamers coming back and by the time they addressed the issues, it was too late.
Its all about maintaining the numbers in a MP - not how many you have in the first 8hrs. Time will tell whether this does enough to draw people away from the other Battle Royale games or whether the audience goes back and leaves this game empty.
The buzz around this game is positive, I think I'll try it later this night, I rarely play multiplayer games though. Now suddenly I want to replay titanfall 2
I will never download an EA game.
Am I the only one who thinks it's bizarre that they've made a Titanfall game/spin off with no Titans? That was literally the only thing that attracted me to it.
Well, that and wall running, but they've done away with that as well.
@Bagshot so if it was a game you had to pay for, and something else entirely, you think you’d be more interested? Gotcha!
@Bagshot football games are all the same, racing games are all the same, first person shooters are all the same. There are small differences of course, and this is obviously no different, but let’s not pretend the majority of videogames aren't derivative. It’s just not for you, and that’s fair enough.
I partied up with 2 two friends and played a few hours. It's pretty fun.
Well hey, congratulations to them, then. Might not be my personal cup of tea, but I'm glad gamers are giving it a chance and hope many of them enjoy it when they do.
I skipped it played Titanfall 2 frontia defence instead
Anyone on the fence about trying this game, give it a shot! It’s absolutely fantastic! Great fun in a small group of friends, fantastic gunplay and movement from titanfall 2 and runs like a dream!
Bravo Respawn Entertainment, Bravo!
