Push Square’s official Game of the Year has been decided, but you won’t see the editorial team's top ten until later in the month – we’ve got to keep the articles churning through the slow Christmas period, after all. That said, if you want some Game of the Year action right now, then our readers are voting on their favourites over in the forum.
This year the wonderful KratosMD has taken control of the ballot, and already tons of votes have been cast. You can participate – and find full instructions – through here. Make sure you get your votes in quickly, because the winner will be decided on 11th December. Thanks to everyone in the forum for taking part, and special mention to KratosMD for organising things.

There shouldn't be a poll it's obviously God of War otherwise shame on you Push Square if it's not boi thing would get ugly 😜
We all know that Push Square will give it to RDR2. That was obvious since they put the review up. Hopefully the forum readers get it right.
My GOTY is God of War, also it could be my game of the generation.
Starting my campaign for Nickelodeon Kart Racers for GOTY, baby! 😜
My vote went to Astrobot.
We all know Gow is going to win for readers as it should plus we already know push square writers are giving it to rdr 2 so they should just get it over with. It’s easy to come to that conclusion because of the way they overhype the game as the second coming while conveniently ignoring its gameplay, control and pacing problems which gow excelled at and gameplay should be the most important thing in a GAME which is why I vote for GOW. I enjoyed my time with rdr 2 but chapter 5 was so out of place while six and the epilogue just dragged their feet for way too long especially the epilogue which was mostly filled with mundane crap and all that combined ruined the pacing. The fundamental gameplay and control problems as well as superfluous survival mechanics that were a hindrance and didn’t add the gameplay in any way as well as with what i stated above is why I wouldn’t be able to give it to rdr 2 in good conscience even though it’s open world was amazing and lively and I liked Arthur a lot.
@KratosMD
Thanks for doing this. I look forward to participating in this every year! Gonna cast my votes in just a few minutes
I thought RDR2 would be my GOTY for sure, but it couldn't take the crown from GoW for me due to all the irritating unnecessary survival mechanics/realism; still really loved the game and it's an easy #2 for me, but just felt it would've been way better without all the "realism".
Btw, thanks @KratosMD - love a good poll! 😀
If RDR beats God of War I'm never coming back to this site.
DQXI.
I may not have said that when the credits rolled about 30 game play hours ago, but a game that's basically 2 full games in one, 1 linear story driven easy JRPG to start followed by 1 difficult dungeon crawler, all for $60 Day 1, deserves my vote.
When they finish the duology or trilogy for GoW then the complete "Kratos Kollection" will get my vote.
Yeah GOW is far and away my GOTY. Played about an hour today on ng+ and it's just sublime on so many levels. RDR2 was decent but personally would even put it behind Spiderman.
Excellent job, @KratosMD.
The variety of games mentioned already shows what a great year it's been and what a range of gamers we have here.
I still think that Push Square will give the award to God of War.
But if you expect that The Game Awards will not give it to RDR 2, you're being naive.
As impressed as I've been with the PS4 lineup, I'm even more impressed with the PSVR lineup. The PSVR has been like a standalone console. PS4 required, obviously. But if you had a PS4, and wanted some great exclusives...it would be PSVR over the other options.
I've just talked to someone who thinks Phil Spencer is Goty.
No kidding it's RDR2 though.
God of war for sure. Spiderman was fun but still the end of the day it felt like just another open world Arkham game. RDR2 is....ok, just not digging the "immersion" factor that they bank so heavily on in every aspect of the game.
You better have Astro Bot in there or I'll cut you.
@KratosMD Good luck counting all those new votes that have come in!
@MistressTonberry Don’t worry, @KratosMD loves any kind of poll.
God of War > RDR2.
Assassins creed odyssey is my game of the year.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 for me.
If RDR2 doesn't beat that very linear game with a LOT of filler that is God of War, then something is wrong....
@BAMozzy careful, some fanboys won't appreciate that.
@BAMozzy What's wrong with linear games?
@Octane nothing but boring ones aren't fun.
Granted I prefer linear to open world but God of War is still boring.
RDR2 for me. And no, hmmmmm I can't think of anything else to say so don't ask me you crazy little pop-up box!
Astrobot, astrobot astrobot, the only game to make games fun again and I smiled like a kid all the way through!Big shout to GOW to which was almost perfect for flat gaming
@IBeAGamer LOL - I know....
@Octane Nothing in general but when they follow the same mission structure over and over again - as in get so far but then have to go and get some 'tool' or upgrade to progress, get so far but then need to get some tool/upgrade to progress etc it isn't very creative. It wasn't just that though with GoW, two of the realms are just 'filler' and quite repetitive and most of the little linear paths of the lake nine are just there for collectables and/or treasure. The only path's of the main path through the game are either dead-ends or loop back to the main path with treasure. They hid the loading quite well with a long boat trip through a boring cave and the fast travel 'tree' was at least better than black screen...
I am not saying God of War was bad - far from it. Visually impressive, performed and played well, story was OK even if it had a few plot holes (like why didn't Freya take the broken mistletoe arrow from Atreus when she was looking after him) and relatively well voiced - although hearing 'Boi' all the time did get tedious. Audio overall was good.
I played it through to the Platinum Trophy so it wasn't a bad game at all - although the last few trophies were a boring, repetitive grind. Its not so much its linearity, more the structure of the linear story and the fillers too that bring the game down. There are other things that grated with me too but that may well go into spoiler territory...
@BAMozzy She took the arrows when you went back to revive Mimir, that's the second time you see her, and the first time after getting the arrows IIRC.
I see those other realms as optional; neat late-game challenges. They didn't really have any story attached to them, but since they were optional I don't really mind it. Main game stood out to me though. Backtracking and dead ends are common in Metroidvania games, but I like the structure. I mean, you spend an awful lot of time doing nothing in open world games, so I rather spend that time going through some carefully crafted levels. But that's just my take on it.
@BAMozzy I'm an Xbot now apparently because I'm not supportive of Sony screwing over Japanese devs. xD
I can only really vote for RDR2, even though i’m only half way through it and find it quite boring and frustrating a lot of the time.
@Octane Not the broken arrow that Kratos used to repair the broken strap that was on Atreus' Chest and 'obvious' when Kratos left Atreus in Freya's Care later on in the story. That arrow had implications later of course but Freya had to have seen it...
The Realms may have been optional but that still doesn't mean they had to be repetitive and boring. There was still potential their - like some of the bigger areas off the Lake of Nine that had no 'story' purpose but had 'treasure' as well as the more interesting side missions. These two realms could have been much 'more'.
Arguably visiting every little linear path around the lake of Nine to collect 'treasure' is 'doing' nothing, much like in an Open World game spending time hunting or gathering resources. It would have been better not having to jump into the boat to sail to the next after completing one, the ability to go round the coast on foot. The map looked 'open world' but none of the areas actually linked up despite being next to each other, you had to come back to the lake, get in a boat sail to the next path instead of just walking, exploring etc to the next. It could have been more like H:ZD which also had a linear story of course with more 'side' missions. Not saying that would necessarily be better.
Games like Uncharted are linear and work really well. They have a story that drives you forward all the time but God of War is a story that moves you back and forth, Get to a point, turn back to go and find tool/upgrade to progress, get so far before having to go back to find tool/upgrade yet again to progress. It also forces 'back-tracking' just to open up a dead end with a treasure chest. I know its optional but its still spending a lot of time doing 'nothing' as you make your way back to these areas and then make your way back to either a portal to waste time 'fast travelling' or waste time getting back to the story path.
As I said, its not a bad game and whether there is 'optional' content or not, you have to take everything as a whole - not just the story path but the whole package. I don't judge open world games on just the main story but all the side quests, all the optional things you can do etc. I wouldn't judge Call of Duty for example on 'just' its campaign, just the MP (or a single MP mode), or just the Zombies but the game as a whole.
Red Dead Redemption 2 for me. Don't care what anyone says, this is the game a lifetime.
I'm half way through red dead 2 and I love it!! Yes it has flaws but for me, it's a game which moves forward the entire medium. I haven't played God of war or assassins creed odessey this year but I can't wait to try them, they both look amazing!!
Surprised there have been no shouts for monster hunter world, I didn't dig the beta but it clearly consumed a lot of people's play time this year.
Red Dead Redemption 2 gets my vote. It's a shame so many were put off by the controls because the game is outstanding with one of the best written protagonists I've seen for many a year.
Monster Hunter World would probably be my vote. Currently on Chapter 4 of RDR2 and trying to love it. I currently like it. Great world and vision held back by repetitive mission structure and the sheer amount of content that doesn't seem to contribute that much. Just getting through the main story is a slog (proven by less than 50% completing Chapter 3 according to trophies). Also, online is a let down. Get off my lawn..grrr
@BAMozzy God of War had no filler. Everything in it very meaningful unlike many other game's sidequests. Also at least God of War feels great to play and not outdated like RDR2.
@PSfan4Life22 No filler? the two realms that are just repetitive combat is just filler and serves no real purpose - other than for trophies but are completely unnecessary and repetitive. RDR2 isn't bad to play - unless you are on PS4 or XB1 - its better on Pro and virtually perfect on X. It has more depth, more attention to detail - perhaps to real in some aspects that perhaps grate with some who would rather not have animations of searching a dead body to get loot which does take time compared to just running over loot and automatically picking it up.
