Many people enjoying Red Dead Redemption 2 have noticed the sudden disappearance of several gang members from the main camp. Sadie, John, Abigail, and Jack will all go missing after a certain point early on in the game, leaving players concerned they weren't able to play missions given by these characters.
The bug is so prominent that Rockstar has released an article on its support page. The developer says it is "aware of the issue" and that it's currently working towards a fix, which will be included in the next patch for the game. It also highlights what is triggering the problem. If you die during the mission 'Polite Society, Valentine Style' in Chapter 2 and use the 'Retry Checkpoint' option, the aforementioned characters will disappear from camp -- unless they have a mission for you.
For now, the advice given to avoid the bug is to complete the mission with no failures, or load a save from before you failed it. Fortunately, at the start of Chapter 4, all characters will return to camp, so you could either carry on until then, wait for the patch to appear, or attempt the Chapter 2 mission again.

I was lucky enough to avoid this one. Glad a fix is coming though.
Ah, I was thinking, I didn’t die during that mission? But my cinematic camera didn’t follow the Blackwater rider fast enough and I failed that part once. Yeah, it’s pretty annoying. I’m still on chapter 2 but at my pace, they’ll probably fix it before I get to ch 4
I actually deliberately "failed" this mission without realising it (had run over a dog while chasing the guy, so just stopped until it asked me to retry).
So I ended up restarting because of it and have just now caught back up to where I was before (toward the end of chapter 2). It makes a big difference having all camp members just hanging around so I'm glad I replayed.
A frustrating glitch for sure. I'm really interested to see what they fix in patches for this game as there are quite a few bugs all over the place from my experience.
Just got to chapter 3 so I'm glad I skipped the bug hopefully they will sort out the Hdr Issue soon aswell
@roe Same here restarted the game and now still on Chapter 2. At first, I felt it wasn't a big deal not having those 4 at camp but after reading comments all around the web and realising they're still missing even in Chapter 3, I just knew I had to restart before making any progress.
And it really is a big deal having them there, you'll listen in on their banter and get to realize (no spoilers) stuff like why Jack and John were pretty estranged in RDR1
I'm well into chapter 3, so I'll just wait for the patch.
It's surprising because Rockstar games are mostly solid when it comes to major bugs but this is quite a big one. Luckily I never had it.
I'm on chapter 3 now and did a mission with Sadie. She's become my new favourite camp member.

Yeah, my game has been affected. It suddenly occurred to me that the characters were nowhere to be seen. Some of the camp dialogue and banter as well as quests add a lot to the dynamic of the group and Arthur's relationship with them. If had known what triggered it at the time I would have been extra careful. I don't care to redo it as I have now spent many hours on the game, but am looking forward to the fix.
As you can replay missions, can you go back and re-attempt without dying and the bug will be resolved? If not I'm gonna wait until it's fixed before moving on. Real shame as I'm dying to play more
@get2sammyb . why does Rockstar take too long to release major patch ? they need hurry up for people who want do those missions

Good to hear. I haven't been to the camp for a long time so I'll keep doing my things until its patched I guess.
I'm seriously thinking about a new game; I'm still in chapter 2 and I got the bug but I feel I spent most of the time just learning controls or chasing animals. I bet I could reach the Uncle mission in less then 1 hour...
Just go out and hunt, find out weapon unlocks improve camp. Im still trying to get 16 perfect squirrel pelts for a cap LoL
Is this the mission where you save the girls in town? From what I remember it's quite hard to die in that mission anyway no?
I must have missed this one, just been to camp and all are present. I really should spend some more time around camp interacting with people
For me the game is too repetitive, completed the main story and already deleted it. Very boring very quick. Just a different gta skin in my opinion.
I was past the point of no return before i even realized/heard about it which sucks for obvious reasons.
I think I got lucky as everyone seems to still be around. You have to have a good walk about to find some of them, they like to wander off to the edges of the camp at times. I’m hoping they sort out the issue with the GTA online challenge weapons not appearing soon as well
@Davidtreagus Sounds like you done too quickly, you mean, and not done much else. The previous Red Dead Redemption seemed like an improvement over GTA IV, and 2 seems like it does over GTA V. Preferences I guess and like a refresh*/difference.
Do they intend on fixing the hdr? One of the best story's I've ever played but knowing it could look 10 times better in hdr is disappointing. My question is did they mess up or did they think people were so stupid they wouldn't notice? There is a huge difference between hdr and sdr.
