At long last, Red Dead Redemption 2 has officially launched on PS4. Those with digital copies of the critically acclaimed Western have been able to play since midnight, having pre-loaded the game ahead of time. However, those who have decided to purchase the physical version may be in for a wait. As we know, the game's data is spread across two Blu-Ray discs, but it sounds like it'll take a bit of time for the game to fully install on your console.
DualShockers estimates that it'll take roughly an hour and 30 minutes to install Red Dead 2 from the two discs.
Initially when we inserted the disc, the estimated time read as three hours total. Thankfully that sped up over time. When installing the 89.195 GB required to play Red Dead Redemption 2, disc one contained 41.631 GB of the data and took us approximately 46 minutes to install in its entirety. After putting in the second disc, the rest downloaded in what ended up being 42 minutes. So in total, it took us 1 hour and 28 minutes to install Red Dead Redemption 2 in its entirety.
This test was carried out on a PS4 Pro, but the site also installed the game on a standard PS4 and found the times were very similar. It sounds like those with physical copies should be prepared to set aside some time for the installation process.
Do you have a physical version of Red Dead Redemption 2? Does this lengthy installation bother you, or are you happy to wait? Sit patiently in the comments below.

90 minutes! It’s like going back to the PS3 days.
That's nothing. I have fast internet, and Black Ops 4 took three and a half hours.
This will be a dodde lol.
wow what's it like on XB1 then because that installs games a lot slower than the PS4 does
@GoodGame This is the time for installing from the discs, not downloading the game from the Store.
Yep started at 9:15 finished about 10:40 ish. With the update. Not bad but a while when your anxious to play.
@FullbringIchigo I thought the same thing.
Luckily, mine is PS4. Looks like I will be playing more Skyrim on Switch while this installs.
@FullbringIchigo it's about the same on the X without the update. With the update add about 5 mins depending on your internet speed.
Got 3 minutes left of the 1 hour and 30 mins.Goodbye life it's been fun 😂
Not picking mine up until 7pm. It's going to be a late night for me I feel.
It's going to be like watching a Man Utd game. A long, long, long 90 minutes.
no dramas
Bought digital and pre loaded last night ready for today.
Was able to play the first 2 hours this morning and it's glorious!
I remember when it took me 18 hours to download a patch for heavy rain back in the day. Those were dark times.
'Does this lengthy installation bother you, or are you happy to wait?'
In answer to this question, its probably a good thing. I am working at home today and knowing i could be playing a shiny new rockstar game would be quite a distraction. When my copy arrives, i will just get the download going in the background
Downloaded it late last night and was ready for 5 this morning for a quick go before work. Looks great on the Pro, controls seem a bit cumbersome but I'll get used to them, had a great time so far overall
Still quicker than downloading!
I downloaded it during the night.
Clever daddy.
@ApostateMage It hurts!
Physical version. It ended up costing me 7 euro as I sold fc5, dark souls remastered and batman arkham knight so won't mind the long wait now
Does anyone know if it will be quicker to install in rest mode?
@LN78 o god i forgot about that!! It truly was a phantom pain! (Will get my coat)
@Quintumply Sorry. Meant to say I bought it on disc and it still took that long.
Luckily my GameStop did a 9 release because this wasn’t an exaggeration it took one hour and twenty five minutes for me to install it so I didn’t get to start playing it till almost eleven lol
@Rudy_Manchego Respect 😂
@carlos82
I downloaded the app. It's useful to have the manual available on phone in addition to map etc
@GoodGame Ah, gotcha.
@AshM I don't think you can install discs in rest mode. Anyhow, you'd still have to change discs to install both.
@get2sammyb "It’s like going back to the PS3 days"
Well it is on 2 discs, that reminds me more of the PS1 days, can't recall too many PS2 or PS3 games on more than 1 disc, none that I own anyway, but it happened all the time on PS1, nearly every game I still own. So RDR2 is all about the "retro" then.
@Nightcrawler71 Oh well. It was wishful thinking on my part. I was meant to be off work today but had to work. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to install
90 minutes is nothing, that's like one movie or 2-3 TV episodes without commercials.
want a masterpiece it comes at a price & this is one I will accept every time
Starting installing when I got in at 12:30am, by the time it was done, about 2am, i was too far gone to get past the title screen!
Got home from a halloween party, took about an hour to install, and then I went to bed. Didn't want my first experience of this masterpiece to be when I was slightly inebriated AND tired.
Glad that I got this both digital and physical. The digital version took me 23 minutes to download and just a couple of seconds to install after that. The physical version is still in its shrink wrap.
You all are lucky mines been downloading for 3 days and it’s not even halfway done yet on ps4. 🤬😡
