Red Dead Redemption 2 is officially a hit of colossal proportions, and it's only been out since Friday last week. Rockstar has revealed that its open world adventure enjoyed the "biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment". That means it's made more money than any game or movie to ever release over a weekend.
Indeed, Red Dead Redemption 2 made $725 million worldwide in retail sell-through. With that figure, it's the second-highest grossing entertainment launch of all time, beaten only by Grand Theft Auto V, which managed to make over $1 billion. However, as Rockstar points out, Grand Theft Auto V launched on a Tuesday.
All of this also means that worldwide, Red Dead Redemption 2 has nabbed the record for the biggest launch of any game this year. With Red Dead Online set to release next month, we struggle to comprehend how much money this thing's gonna generate over time.

@DerMeister Slim, I'd say. As gigantic as Red Dead 2 is and will be, I don't think it has the same mass appeal or mainstream recognition as GTA.

Joke aside, yea I'd like to add my thanks to R* for making an extraordinary single player experience and I hope people keep that in mind at a time when so many studios promote mp experience first and foremost.

This is great. As they’ve made all this money already, and will make an awful lot more, perhaps they won’t ruin Red Dead Online with pay to win micro transactions the way they ruined GTA Online.
So the big single player game makes a lot more money than the now multiplayer only Black Ops 4 which in turn made less than it's predecessor which had a campaign 🤔
