Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 PlayStation 4

If you want Red Dead Redemption 2 to be a sprawling, epic Western to lose yourself in for dozens of hours, it seems you won't be disappointed. According to a behind-the-scenes feature from Vulture, the main story is roughly 60-65 hours in length.

The comment was made in relation to 5 hours of cut content regarding a second love interest for the game's protagonist, Arthur Morgan. According to Rockstar head Dan Houser, "one of them didn't work", and it seems that the developer isn't shy about removing parts of its game that don't quite hit the mark. Whole missions were cut because "they were never going to work technically or be quite slick enough, or they felt superfluous", Houser said. "We removed a mission on a train where you had to deal with bounty hunters, because it was fun at first, but then it wasn’t. This part of the process is always about compromise and horse trading. Everyone always loses bits of the game they love."

Considering Rockstar's quest for quality, 65 hours of its best work sounds incredibly exciting. It's unclear if the figure also includes all the extras, such as hunting, fishing, side missions etc, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to suggest you could easily spend 80 or 100 hours exploring Red Dead 2. It was always going to be big, but it's nice to have a rough idea of how much of your life will be consumed.
