So one of the biggest stories this week was that Sony has changed its policy on cross-play. It announced that it was holding a cross-play Fortnite beta on PlayStation 4, allowing users to match up with Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, PC, and Mac players. Quite the turnaround.
Of course, Fortnite could just be the start. While we have serious doubts that big publishers will suddenly allow cross-play on all of their blockbuster titles -- Bethesda has already said that Fallout 76 won't have cross-play, even after Sony's stance change -- it'll be interesting to see whether select games like Rocket League will make use of all this.
But as always, we want to know what you think. Do you really care about cross-play, or is it just something that people love to whine about? Vote in our polls, and then give us an honest opinion in the comments section below.

Should more PS4 games offer cross-play now that Sony allows it? (285 votes)
- Yes, it should be mandatory for all multiplayer games
- Yeah, more games should allow it
- Ideally, but it's up to the developer now
- Eh, I don't care either way
- Nah, only select games should have it, not all
- No, cross-play doesn't add anything of worth

Was PS4's lack of cross-play ever an actual problem, or was it just something people loved to cry about? (275 votes)
- It was definitely an issue, Sony was in the wrong
- Sony was dumb, but it wasn't a huge problem
- There was no real issue, people just loved making a big deal out of it

I don't particularly care for online multiplayer on any system, let alone cross-play. It's neat for those who enjoy it, but it doesn't offer me anything.
No. Never did , never will.
The best thing about having a PS4 is that you have a lot of solo experiences, so I couldn't care less about cross-play. Hope the ones that really want it enjoy it though.
@Shepherd_Tallon tbh there are people that are expecting cross play for red dead online. especially some people on the red dead forum.
but they have to realise that even though sony allows it now,it is still up to the devs to add it aswell.
some people think that because sony finally added it,every game with online will have it,which is wrong.
i never really cared for it, but then i'm not fussed if the people i'm playing online with are only on the same system as i am or a different one
but people blew the whole thing way out of proportion
besides it was already on select PS4 games with P.C it just wans't with XB1 or Switch
It's a great concept, but for me, it's not something I need or particularly want. If I had friends all playing the same game on other platforms, sure, and more options is always better, but personally, I'm not bothered.
I don't care about online and cross play. And yeah - I also thought, that people liked to make a fuzz about something. Sony and the PS4 have little to complain about, so that jealous people will always find the needle in a mountain of hay, like the Germans say, and make a big problem out of it. The most whining came from Xbox and Nintendo fanboys.
Funny thing is: When Microsoft said no to Sony during the PS3 and Xbox 360 times, nobody was complaining. Xbox and Nintendo fanboys are jealous as **** - that's more of a problem than missing cross play.
Don't really delve much into any multiplayer, but I think cross-ply can improve the lifetime of a mp game since it broadens the community.
Just having Fortnite front and center of this "issue" has become tiresome.
I dont care about crossplay at all and never desired it but if it happening then fine. Would be nice if the user has a choice to stick with players on the same platform though. I think this was blown way our of proportion though but now it's done so people can complain about something else.
It’s just nice to have, and that’s pretty much it really. It never really was all that big of a deal to me. I doubt the games I do play online won’t get the cross play anytime soon.
Don't care, but hopefully everyone will shut the f*** up about it now.
It hasn't bothered me all that much, generally, but I think the change is a positive one. I hadn't considered it before but the possibility of playing FIFA against my friend who plays exclusively on Xbox is cool. Assuming EA allows it, of course.
I think most of the recent outcry was more due to Sony having the ability to hold your 3rd party game account hostage than anything, but that isn't part of the survey.
In general though I think the overall move is a good thing, it may never affect you, but I know of at least one person who plays Fortnite on their switch rather than their PS4 solely because it allows him to play with a friend that has an Xbox. It was never a deal breaker on which console to pick, but more flexibility is always nice.
It hopefully also shows that Sony are moving away from their more heavy handed approach to modern gaming and may shift more to allow things like 'real' mods for games in the future (rather than the lacklustre offerings that are out there now).
I think cross-platform multiplayer should become the norm, specifically because, as another commenter has said, it's the kind of feature that helps keep games with smaller playerbases alive long-term, and surely that's a good thing for everybody, right?
As it stands, I'm sure we all know the cross-platform games will begin and end with popular free-to-play and eSports games, so Fortnite, Rocket League and so on so forth will be the only things to really get it. That's... Not really a bad thing, to be perfectly honest.
Nope.
Game media needing something to write about doesn’t equate an issue for me.
Only those xbox fanboys crying about PS4 cross-play and exclusive.
I don't care about cross-play, because PS4 have the most player base.
I think it was blown out of all proportion by certain people looking for something to criticise. All that said, I'm glad they've changed their stance so that we can all move on.
@lacerz Basically. Summer holiday means news drought, so blowing something out of proportion will get clickzzz.
If Sony had not changed its stance on cross play then I would not really have considered it when buying the next generation of console. Most people I know do not own a PS4. Gaming should bring players together not seperate them based on ths system they buy. Its not always to do it across all games but where possible this should be pushed for. All games benefit because of the larger combined player base.
Very puzzled by the seemingly anti cross play results by about 50% of pollsters.
"No, cross-play doesn't add anything of worth"...this statement seems objectively false. If cross play is implemented well, then it will give us a world where we can party up with our friends on any platform and game together. Surely this is objectively better for consumers?
EDIT: I'm referring to Cross Play as the ability to play with gamers on other platforms. I'm aware that cross progression and cross purchases are also being thrown into the discussion. Cross progression is something I can get behind but I don't see a world where cross purchase is viable for all games.
I’m not fussed about cross-play either way really. I suppose it’s nice for those that really want the online MP experience with friends. That’s not my thing.
That said, I will reiterate what I noted on the Fortnite article when this came down — is there not an anti-Microsoft outcry since they require a Live subscription to play even free-to-play games? And now that Sony is participating in cross-play for Fortnite and others coming, will they start requiring a Plus subscription to play F2P online? I’m surprised the Xbox players aren’t ticked off that they are getting fleeced by Microsoft in this regard.
I didn't give a fig before and I couldn't give a fig now. I am figless.
If the game starts with crossplay eg. Clash of clans/mobile games then so be it. If it's on PC like Overwatch and they have twitchy controls whereas consoles less likely I don't see how there can be an even playing field. If I get to shoot someone in the face on Fortnite I hope it's mobile players lol... advantage consoles!
The worst thing about this whole ordeal was having to hear people whine about it endlessly.
Unless fighting games include it, it's not something that would really affect me. I think it's fine as an option, it's pretty much a bonus feature at best right now.
It's pretty much a Garbage Feature that promotes unbalance (like some dumb people playing with mouse and keyboard on PS4, IN ONLINE GAMES!).
If you have friends on the other side it could become handy, but who gives a shirt about playing with 10year old Xbox players.
on the other hand, I suppose we could benefit from the increased population in servers especially on dead/dying games like Titanfall2.
IF it doesn't increase net problems you know...ping/nat-type etc idk about those...
Didn’t care before don’t care now lol
I don't really much care for Cross Play and the only thing that would get me to care about it is if I can make a party and use party chat cross platform....and even then... meh. Until then I honestly couldn't care less
I love multiplayer games, but never cared for cross play. I think it's a great thing to have for games with dying communities, but other than that, its not a big deal.
Nah, I don't care
Not a big deal for me but good for consumers overall. Boom!
There's definitely been an overreaction on the crossplay topic in the media and by extension among gamers. Why the 'issue' wasn't a big deal before (especially at the beginning of this gen when players count really matters) and then it became one all of a sudden is revealing. I've always fancied a mp game where Xbox gamers would face PS gamers in a fun and friendly console war (instead of the sometimes nasty one on the internet) but that's somehow idealistic and will probably never happen that way.
Didn't care back in the PS3 days don't care now at all about it as long as I can play with friends through PS4 because most of them HAVE that console it doesn't bother me.
@tudsworth And its easier to kill of platform exclusive games this way. You get a spread out playerbase and on the end we get liveserviceeee with copy and paste games.
The Kotaku/Polygon-driven media have a habit of complaining big about tiny things, the staff is then picked up by conservative "consumer choice" groups who make it their own issue. All just to fish in those views and angry comments. It's probably the only time the left-wing media inadvertently collaborates with the right-wing media.
These people don't actually care about crossplay, they are simply in the business of creating and selling controversy.
I'm glad they added it, but I don't think the conversation is over now. This is a step towards something bigger. If popular games like Minecraft and Fortnite have cross play, it's only a matter of time before AAA games start including it. It'll be interesting to see which developers are the first ones to take the leap, and what the excuses of the other ones will be for not doing so.
I get that some people used this situation as an excuse to hate on Sony, but that doesn't mean there weren't others giving legitimate criticism. Seeing all this complaining can get annoying, but ultimately that probably is what led to Sony making the change, which in the end is a win for gamers. I don't see the complaining as a problem as long as it's about real issues and not the lack of a puddle in a Spiderman game or not being able to use NES controllers to play AAA Switch games (seriously, can someone explain to me why people were expecting that second one?)
@JJ2 I think the fact that even Nintendo was willing to allow cross play and Sony wasn't shows why this has become a big issue recently (their new online policies are enough to show you what year they're living in). Before now, most cross play in games was between a console and PC, but the fact that multiple home consoles are allowing it, AND the fact that it's present in some of the most popular games out right now and not just some obscure little games, shows that this is a much bigger deal now than it ever was before.
@hotukdeals
I somehow agree this should be a debate when a new gen is starting. Why that wasn't a topic in the media at the start of this gen is interesting. Like the media just figured out there could be such thing as crossplay and push for an outrage at the end of this gen...(food for thoughts)
I have a strong feeling Sony was planning to bring full crossplay for the launch of next gen but they sped up the process because of the 'outcry'
These results went exactly as I thought they would. Cross-play is an important part of modern gaming and Sony was in the wrong for taking so long to budge on it.
@mrobinson91 While I agree completely, Push Square is very anti-crossplay. They're happy having LESS features then the competition for some reason.
The second and third place companies in the current console gen race teamed up to make big bad Sony look bad, typical sore loser response. Don't be mistaken though, Sony would have done the same thing if they were in that position as well.
@PokeMario
It's Nintendo new gen so to speak and I was saying it makes sense at the start of a new gen (to bring new features)
What Nintendo or don't shouldn't be an excuse for the media to ignore the xbox/PS cross play topic which is the real iceberg everyone knows actually.
We all know that's the xbox/ps cross play being really the crux of the matter.
I don't care about cross-console play, ironically the only thing I ever plan to use cross-console play is playing fortnite using same account on ps4 and switch, and yet after spider-man I think I'm already bored with fortnite.
Most did not care.
In most cases like Fortnite and Rocket League the PS4 had Crossplay with PC. Now it has with Xbox, not a game changer in any way.
Anyone who cares about Online Play does not have a Switch as their only system. And it is not getting any of the top online games in the next 6 months to crossplay with anyway.
"Universal Accounts" is what publishers should focus on. Now that would be awesome.
Cross play does it really matter? I mean ye I could play Fortnite against my friends that picked Xbox over playstation only problem is they don't play Fortnite so I'm not sure what other game are cross play at the minute but it don't one bit of difference to me
Never did or will affect me, me and my friends have always been on PlayStation primarily and that will never change.
I'm glad it's an option for those that want it, but I'm unlikely to use it.
It was never an issue because Sony always had a big fanbase. Now the elitists of the gaming media and the casual players of Fortnite can STFU and move on. Until another f2p game appears...
I almost feel like YouTubers invented this whole non-issue. There's millions of PS4 owners are we really looking for people to play online with?
Not unless it means I can play Forza 4 somehow
@Flaming_Kaiser not sure I get your logic here? It's... Easier to kill exclusives because a game with cross-platform play provides competition? Miss me with that, please. Not every game has to be cross-platform, not every game has to have a multiplayer component, at all.
Did we just forget that a single player platform exclusive became the single fastest selling game of the year or something? Heck, given God Of War and Spider-Man both broke sales records and all expectations, and they're both single-player platform exclusives, surely you have to see those kinds of games aren't going anywhere?
I don't think cross-play is some deal breaking thing for the majority of people, I don't even think it's viable for the overwhelming majority of games. But the fact that it's there is a nice bonus. If anything, normalising the idea now will make people more likely to buy a platform off of the strength of its exclusives, rather than "all my friends are there", a proposition Sony is only going to benefit from with their First-Party studios completely blowing Microsoft's out the water.
Next poll should Fortnite go away or even better Battle Royale.
I wanted to chime in from NintendoLife just to be the Dursley to you guys' Harry Potter.
No matter how you don't want it to be even seen as a big deal, it is.
Think about it for a second - first things first, what benefit should the PS4 community get from not having cross-play? Net infrastructure integrity, to the best of my knowledge, hardly has anything to do with it.
Even if this "asinine whining" that is the cross-play demand from all three userbases (yes, even PS fans outside of this vocal minority we have here) didn't succeed in triggering a chain reaction among Sony's higher-ups, you have to remember one key detail - proper cross-platform play, while not unheard of in previous years, has been properly introduced in console gaming during this generation, so it stands to reason that, should Sony have decided to stick with its poorly justified stance on cross-play, they would have thrown the PS5 into the fray with it being - at that point in the future - the only console with a self-contained online community, which would have (although arguably not as much as other possible factors) hurt the sales of third-party, multiplatform online titles' PS versions.
So there's that, just wanted to give my two cents on the matter.
I wouldn't say Sony was dumb as they didn't need to business-wise. But it's nice that they did it regardless, stirs up positive publicity and us consumers benefit. It's not something I'm going to use a lot but it'll be appreciated when I do.
The best always gets criticised. But having a fortnite account blocked for playing on a certain console is not good either. I don't give a hole on fortnite bit seeing my son this was a brave move from Sony.
Didn't care before, don't care now. Even for games with a multiplayer-focus if it has a good singleplayer campaign that's all I care about.
At least people can shut up about it. That's good enough.
I never cared about this, and it's my understanding that all of this was more or less about Fortnite anyway, which I care even less about than this whole cross-play thing. The only thing I would remotely want any form of cross-play for is Monster Hunter World and even that is moot to me.
There was NO account hostage!! I hate when people said this. All other games work the same way. Progress, in game items or any DLC will not work on PS4 and XBox One both! Yes you have to buy it on both systems and have a account on each one.
PC has mouse and keyboard, XBox is getting mouse and Keyboard soon, Is PS4 next? Will all multiplayer games become cross platform and progression games? Is Microsoft trying to get Windows PC to swallow game consoles. I guess the next Xbox will be called the XBox WPC (windows PC).
@DMG361132 How do you know that most couldn't care less about it? Enough care to make Sony change its entire policy surrounding it.
@DMG361132 It's not an insignificant issue when the entire industry but Sony is supporting it. It's the norm now, and PlayStation is only just catching up.
Yes, I would like that to happen, because there's literally no negative to it. It baffles me that the likes of yourself try and argue so hard against it.
Currently cross play doesn't mean must since only a diaseas is compatible with it but let's say a Co-op game like Dead Island support it
It would be awesome to play with friends from Xbox side
Is the answers from the last survey really serious?!!!! Seriously?!!
Oh my....
@DMG361132 Please explain these consequences further. It could help the PS4 sell more? What's the downside to PS4 owners again? The downsides are minuscule at best. It might mean other systems need to ensure they have something other than playing with your freinds to get you to buy it, which can only strengthen the industry. When Xbox starts getting good exclusives it'll be a day to celebrate.
And yes, the rest of the industry is allowing cross-play with Fortnite and other select games, but PS4 wasn't, that means Sony was the only one in the industry not to allow it. The new policy extends beyond Fortnite, and that's clear.
@JohnKarnes If your Fortnite account is free to go between any system, any system, and you take it on PS4 and it loses that freedom, it's being held hostage. It's not allowed to leave anymore against it's will. Fortnite accounts don't have perment residency requirements like other games do. It's not Battlefield and COD. Other can work that way all they want, but Fortnite didn't. You could go from Switch to Xbox to Switch to PS4...
@oatmealwarrior92 @Cheski Same here guys no interest in cross play and never will.
Btw, love that the first 2 comments had Spiderman avatars .
I think that on average households have one console system in their homes. To play Fortnite only on PS4 or XBox, it's a good bet you find full games any time of day you wish to play. Why does either platform really need crossplay? Real life story: My coworker, she is a rabid Fortnite player on her PS4. Where I see interest in cross play, is that she wants to play against a friend in Purchasing. She only has XBox. So I sit in the middle listening to them talk about Fortnite on two different consoles, wanting to play together. Neither can afford to just go purchase the other console. I guess now they will be able to play together. So, I can see the interest from this first hand experience. I could care less, but I can see where this does have application.
@Cheski If you only play offline it obviously won’t matter, but most people seem to have missed the point anyway - that if everyone is playing the same game, then splitting the community just makes it slower to find matches and quicker for the game to die off in general because the player base is separated.
So it’s not really a matter of opinion about it, it’s obviously a fact that it has the potential to improve online experiences... if done correctly.
Don't play fortnite but cross play is a useful thing for small community multiplayer games (especially indies). I'm bad enough at fps multiplayer games without getting my ass kicked by the keyboard/mouse crew though. This shoukdnt be for all games, imagine gta online with the pc hacking/modding scene?! Would be great to extend to souls games/nioh etc
Free and open doesn't matter if we don't use online games. Free and open is important it dont matter what console you play on its a server its connected to.
Never cared, never will.
Never really cared about cross-play until last night, was able to play Fortnite with my brother who has a Xbox One and even able to voice chat too was pretty cool!
@DMG361132 From both the announcement and what Bethesda said, it's pretty clear Sony will allow anyone who wants to do cross-play to do so. It would be bad for Sony to have anyone say they won't allow cross-play now. People would be angrier than before.
And wow, that's all it takes to go on your ignore list? You don't like being challenged do you? Honestly, it's not a big deal to me considering you attitude as you talk to others. I'm not trying to bring you down or anything by saying that either. Best of luck to you mate.

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2018/09/sony_cross-console_play_a_major_policy_change
I don't think it matters for most of us here, but we are in a bubble. It matters to the masses a lot more.
Heck no! Multiplayer isn't multiplayer, unless couch co-op involved.
I play pc games and ps4.i used to play online shooters on the pc mainly because my pc just looked the dogs dangly bits..but the cheating hacking scum bags ruined it so i play online games on the ps4 and single player games mainly on the pc..cross play just opens up the ps4 to all the dirty cheating aim botting mofos and could potentionally ruin the excellent ps4 community that i have been enjoying since leaving the script kiddies behind..oh happy days..
I only want crossplay for Monster Hunter. That's it.
If everyone cared and nobody cried hahhahahaha
@Jaz007 Lol reminds me of Red Mage on here as well. He ignored me cos ge interpreted me challenging people's opinions as "name calling and harassment" and that I have "leeway with the staff" very strange.
