Last week, everyone got hyped because it looked like Kingdoms of Amalur could be making an eventual comeback. Publisher THQ Nordic announced that it had acquired the rights to the property, immediately conjuring images of a remaster or even a sequel.
Reviving Kingdoms of Amalur may not be as straightforward as we first imagined, though. According to Eurogamer, THQ Nordic says that "EA still has the rights publishing rights to Kingdoms of Amalur", which obviously complicates the matter somewhat. EA originally published the game on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
"At this stage we 'only' acquired the intellectual property. Given our track record, we know what the burning questions (remaster, remake, port to current-gen systems etc) are, but we decided do not answer those specifically as we tend to put our heads together first and then do our homework, and only start to talk about anything once we feel confident and very familiar with the franchise," THQ Nordic explains.
In other words, there could be a lot of work that needs doing before the company can actually do anything with Kingdoms of Amalur. A remaster, for example, would need to be given the green light by EA.
It's put a bit of a dampener on the situation, then, but it at least sounds like THQ Nordic is willing to try and work something out. With any luck, there's still some hope for Kingdoms of Amalur.

EA will be EA so.we won't see a sequel
I mean, history tells us they will do it if they can get over the legal issues.
Hello darkness my old friend.
EA: sure you can do it. Letβs talk about how we can incorporate micro transactions.
A great game no need to do a remaster. A sequel would be welcome.
@hotukdeals. i know right.give me a sequel.word up son

SUCH A GOOD GAME.
Maybe EA will do the right thing this time. ππ€£ππ€£
EA only owns the right to the PS3 game correct?
Just make a new entry instead of remaster the old one should be fine.
I'd rather have a sequel TBH but a remaster would be neat too!
I would have loved to be there, when this idea was originally "pitched". πππ... π
I wonder if this end up similar to inXile Entertainment getting the Wastleland IP from Electronic Arts free of charge.
