Wow, what a good August that was. We've been saying all year that September, October, and November are absolutely nuts when it comes to release schedules, but last month was really strong in its own right. We gave out a number of high scores across a bunch of different genres, which only made voting for our August 2018 Game of the Month that much harder.
Bronze Trophy: Guacamelee! 2
Resident indie maniac Stephen Tailby was on hand to review Guacamelee! 2, a strong sequel to an already very enjoyable game. "Its blend of challenging platforming, satisfying combat, and new abilities makes for a thoroughly entertaining experience," Stephen wrote, concluding that "you'd be loco" to miss out on this one. Another great 8/10 for developer Drinkbox Studios.

Silver Trophy: Yakuza: Kiwami 2
With the release of Yakuza: Kiwami 2, the West is finally caught up on SEGA's stellar series (or just about, anyway). And as it turns out, this full remake of Yakuza 2 is actually one of the greatest entries yet. "Adding to a growing list of great PS4 remakes, Yakuza: Kiwami 2 is up there with the best games in SEGA's series," we wrote, adding, "throw in some superb optional content, and you've got a prime Yakuza package that's ultimately very difficult to fault." You've earned your 8/10, Kiryu-chan.

Gold Trophy: Dead Cells
Dead Cells is one of those indie games that only comes along maybe once or twice a year, reminding us that smaller titles can equal, and in some cases surpass, the big boys of gaming. A superb action RPG, prolific reviewer Liam Croft called Dead Cells "one of the PS4’s very best", awarding it a 9/10. "Dead Cells has raised the bar for the rogue-lite genre going forward," Liam wrote. High praise indeed.

Platinum Trophy: Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition
Beating out Dead Cells by just a few votes, Divinity: Original Sin II: Definitive Edition is our Game of the Month for August, and going by John Cal McCormick's glowing review, that's probably the right call.
"With stellar writing, challenging combat, a compelling central quest, and dozens of worthwhile side activities, Divinity: Original Sin II is one of the finest role-playing games available on PlayStation 4," John wrote. "This is a dense, engrossing adventure, packed to the hilt with stories worth hearing, conflicts you’ll want to resolve, and secret treasures just begging to be discovered." Another well deserved 9/10.

How we decide our Game of the Month: At the end of each month, the editorial team put together a list of nominees. Nominees must have been released within the month, and they must have been reviewed by Push Square. We select nominees based on our own review scores.
The editorial team then presents this list of nominees to the rest of the Push Square staff. Staff are asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to be crowned Game of the Month. First choice gets 3 points, second choice gets 2 points, and third choice gets 1 point. When voting closes, we tally the results to determine the order of this article. The game with the most points is our Game of the Month.

Got to be Yakuza for me, I'm still playing it!
Dead Cells for me never been a fan of rogue likes but this game has me hooked played it for 20 hours plus so far.
Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor - Martyr though tbh most of my August was spent on the PC with the new WoW expansion. Between that and Martyr, I haven't really had the time to properly dig into games like Guacamelee 2 or Divinity: OS2.
I've spent the whole month playing Ni No Kuni 2, but Yakuza is definitely my game of the month.
For me it's Donut County
Dead Cells– the only right answer.
F1 2018 for me. Haven't bought any of the 4 games above.
My number 1 is guacamelee 2 and number 2 is dead cells, great game but I still prefer metroidvania compared to rogue-lite genre.
I think my favourite is Guacamelee 2, but I’ve also really enjoyed Overcooked 2 and the little I’ve played of Dead Cells. Really great month
Yakuza of course!
Yakuza!!!
...after I finish the first one
Yakuza Kiwami 2. Fantastic game, missed it back when it originally released because I had moved onto the PS3 glad to have a chance to right that wrong with this remake though. Sega did a great with it. Just got to Chapter 5 and have sunk 9-10 hours into it and I'm confident saying it's my second favorite game in the series after 0. Great story and characters to this point and I haven't even really scratched the surface.
Road to Ballhalla takes the #1 spot for me. It's a quirky physics puzzle game with lots of personality to it.
Other really good ones from August: Battle Chef Brigade, Socketeer, Chasm, TETRA’s Escape, Shikhondo - Soul Eater, and All-Star Fruit Racing.
I haven't played the ones listed by PushSquare though, apart from Yakuza 2 a long, long time ago.
Wow, August had some truly excellent games!
Yakuza: Kiwami 2 is a masterpiece.
Guac! 2 for me, juuuust pipping Dead Cells to the post! Though in the spirit of full disclosure, I haven’t yet played Divinity or Yakuza.
