As you’d expect, there’ll be a main thread to Ghost of Tsushima’s narrative, which will explore the arc of protagonist Jin Sakai in 1274 Japan. But there’ll be much more to the PlayStation 4 exclusive’s open world, which will form the fabric of the fiction. We got a glimpse of one of these side-quests during Sony’s E3 2018 press conference overnight.
“In this story, Jin fights alongside another samurai – a deadly onna-bugeisha named Masako,” producer Brian Fleming wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “They joined forces to save their homeland from the Mongol invaders, but Masako’s tragic personal history drives a wedge in her relationship with Jin.”
While it’s expected of a contemporary open world game, it’s neat that Sucker Punch is going this deep with its side-quests. For as fun as the inFAMOUS games were, most of the optional activities felt like checklists, but here it seems that the Seattle studio wants to inject a little depth into the extraneous content.

Looks intriguing. I can't wait to see more of this!
Any idea, if this gameplay footage took place before or after what was shown in the previous trailer?
this was for sure my highlight of the show.
did not disappoint at all.
just a shame that most of the youtube coments are demands for a japanese dub while that is already confimed to be a thing.
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that having five or six intricate, compelling side storylines is infinitely better than two-dozen fetch quests and collectathons.
This game isn't even on my radar; it is my radar.
@RogerRoger Yep, completely agree.
I like side quests. GoW and H:ZD each have several that are almost as interesting as the main story. It's kind of to be expected these days.
My only concern for Ghosts is the combat. It looked very precise based on timing. I suck at those. It doesn't need to be a mosou game but I need a little leeway in my moves. Both slow moving Onimusha and fast moving Genji had great battle systems that was different yet easily approachable. I'll have to read up more on the combat in this one. Hopefully even get a demo. Timing and 1 hit kills aren't my thing.
@rjejr yeah the 1hit kill move in the first fight was for sure a timed based kill. almost like a perfect parry move.
@rjejr I have never, ever considered myself anywhere near "good" at games, but I'm sure there'll be a forgiving learning curve in such a big-budget, story-driven new IP action-adventure. There was no HUD (beyond the location titles) so I'm sure a couple of those cinematic moments had input prompts we didn't get to see, or the ability to trigger slow-mo badassery is stored up by executing stealth kills or something.
I mean, c'mon... if I can complete Metal Gear Rising, I'm sure folk like us will have no problems with this!
@jdv95 is it? when did confirm that?
@Athrum http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2017/11/01/ghost-of-tsushima-japanese-dub-confirmed/ they also hinted at a global japanese dub option
seems weird that those people still demand something that is already confimed to be a thing.
@RogerRoger I suppose it's less "having a problem with this" and more I don't like it. The original Genji was one of the best games I ever played. 2 was a disaster, I don't know what happened. I prefer GoW, DmC to Batman. I've tried so hard to play all of those Batman games but I just can't do it. I mean I can, but I really don't want to. Never played Spiderman 2 but I hear thats where it all started. And 1 of those fighting games, Tekken or Virtua Figther, is based on 1 hit kills. I'm more of a Soul Calibur guy myself.
@jdv95 I was thinking of that first fight w/ the 3 guys, first 2 went down in 1 hit, was glad to see the 3rd guy took 3, gave me hope.
@rjejr Oh, okay, that's totally different, then! And completely fair enough; each to their own, and all that.
@jdv95 "However, we still do have one more question on whether the English release of Ghost of Tsushima will also have these authentic Japanese dubs or not."
It's not confirmed, this is why most people ask for it. It's normal for a game released in Japan to be dubbed, just look at Detroit for example.
The game-play was pretty much what I was expecting - not a 'bad thing' at all. Its not a surprise to me either that side quests/stories are in this game either.
Personally I will play in English dialogue as I really do not want subtitles and hate subtitles in games (especially if they are speaking a language I understand). I did notice though that the Monguls are not speaking a language I understand - which is perfect for the situation. I know they are 'Japanese' and you are playing as a 'native' to that area. However, I wouldn't have to read what they are saying to understand the conversation so the fact they are speaking language I do, its more 'natural' - at least for me....
To be honest I wasn't even that excited for GOT before the reveal as I always thought the infamous games were a little boring and repetitive but damn I was blown away. I think sucker punch are on to something here.
If you made me choose which of the four I want to play right now, it would be Ghost cos there's just something about it that makes for a really refreshing change in Sony's exclusives.
@jdv95 Its funny that people demand anything anyway. 😉
Yeah if there wasn't Japanese voices, I wouldn't play it at all. People don't speak English in feodal Japan.
Game of the year. That's all they needed. I'm also undivided as to what Language to play in. Japanese might sound better. But understanding the native language and not the mongels might make more sense too.
I was pretty underwhelmed by Ghost of Tsushima. It is undoubtedly a beautiful game, but from the gameplay they showed, it seems to be just a basic PS2-era hack-n-slash title at its core, albeit with some flashy finishing moves and associated cut-scenes. The story may well be epic, but the gameplay looked fairly shallow.
I don't know why, but from the original reveal trailer, I was expecting something much more... involved. Hopefully there's more to be revealed, and I'll definitely be keeping my eye on it, but at the moment I can't help feeling mildly disappointed; it feels like they've built a Ferrari body around a 2-stroke lawnmower engine.
@Paranoimia I agree, the combat struck me as restrained and rather slowish, visuals alone won't cut it for me but we'll see.
@finalstan it was never going to be bayonetta or dmc fast it’s supposed to be slow, methodical and precise just like how samurai fought
Loving this game even more every time there's news about it.
Can't wait to see a demo.
