So, ANTHEM is starting to look a lot like Destiny, but unlike Bungie's divisive sci-fi shooter, ANTHEM won't actually have any kind of competitive multiplayer component. Speaking to Game Informer, BioWare's Mark Darrah confirms that the game will only feature friendly co-op play when it comes to online shenanigans.
You'll also be able to tackle the title alone if you want, and yes, there will be microtransactions. However, Darrah states that additional purchases will be cosmetic only, and you'll be able to see exactly what you're buying. No loot boxes, in other words.
Again, like Destiny, ANTHEM will also require an online connection, meaning that you won't be able to play unless you're connected to the internet. Other smaller details include confirmation of a character creation system, and your hero will be voiced.
How do you think ANTHEM's sounding so far? Strap on your exosuit and go stomping into the comments section below.

Interests me - Game Informers hands on impression is also adding to the interest...
Good bye anthem, single player online only game? Not interested.
and how much of that game can be played solo? just the story?
it would be a great suprise if the entire game can be played solo but most likely won't be that way. besides i bet most of the trophies will be coop related anyway so that's out the window for me.
days gone should have waited till the sony conference to reveal it's release date. i bet that anthem would not have planned to release the same day as days gone if they did not announce it's release date before anthem did.
"Can be played single-player, is always online".
EA just stop.
Might have been interested of it wasn't out the same time as Days Gone!
Always online suuuuuucks.
I have come to the conclusion that EA doesn't make games that I want to purchase anymore . Always online , loot boxes, focus on multiplayer and half baked single player campaigns just don't cut it for me and that's fine . Plenty of other developers that are still for the gamer.
No big deal for me. Will most likely be there day one. Was very intrigued by what they showed, can't wait to see more!
Looks cool, should be fun to play through with friends. I'd like to see more details on the RPG elements and story sections though.
Same release as Days Gone. Forced Online. All interest I had in this is gone now sadly.
I know everyone is just going to call it a Destiny clone but if done right I don't think it's a bad thing. Destiny has great gameplay it just lacks a meaningful story and content. If they can avoid those same mistakes I'm all in...
@oatmealwarrior92 To be fair, there are no loot boxes in this game.
I just don't see EA and Bioware succeeding where Activision and Bungie have repeatedly struggled. Lack of consistent meaningful content is par for the course with games like this, I think. The most dedicated players expect months worth of game for 6 hours or more per day. How can you keep up with that while maintaining high quality across the board?
..and I don't think this looks anywhere near as fun as the moment to moment gunplay in Destiny which is pretty much perfect and is almost enough to keep you playing when the rest of the game has run out of steam.
Online only does allow for a more dynamic open world experience with dynamic events that can change the world. Playing Solo is possible but they did say it was balanced more for co-op and will be challenging but do-able solo - sounds more like the Division in that regard. No PvP is a good thing - makes it easier to balance the weapons than have MP governing PvE performance too. Unlike Destiny, the world seems more alive, more wildlife as well as more mobility with flight and swimming. I doubt those who hated the way both the Division and Destiny were always online will suddenly find this any better - even if it handles 'Story' better. It doesn't seem as 'repetitive' as destiny - in that you won't need to do the story 3 times for each class...
I think it could be fun - the movement and exploration aspect looks good, the world looks 'interesting' - seeing the different wildlife for example and the 'lore' could be intriguing too. Anyway 8months until release so my opinion could change by then..
@get2sammyb true . I just meant the overall direction EA has been going in .
@BAMozzy I've absolutely no problem with it being always online myself. Part of the fun of these games is bumping into randoms and playing with each other for a bit. And my PS4 is always online anyway.
@kyleforrester87 Doesn't bother me either and my consoles are always online when I am too. I have a lot of good friends online that started off as a 'random' in some online co-op/MP game many years ago - quite a few I expect will be very interest in Anthem so I doubt I will 'struggle' if I want to find someone to play online with - also happy to meet randoms too - especially if there is no loot/ammo stealing or friendly fire...
I don't care about online-only either. Bit of an unusual complaint in 2018 I feel.
@get2sammyb @BAMozzy When the servers shutdown at some point after launch you'll be left with nothing more than a paperweight.
@get2sammyb I really don't get why people are complaining about the always online requirement. I bet the vast majority of PS4 owners have theirs connected to the internet already.
@ReanSchwarzer7 They won't be shut down for years. Will you really want to play Anthem in 2028? Probably not, right?
@get2sammyb maybe play in 2028 with the ps5 remaster and updated visuals.
@get2sammyb If I like a game I'll play it, I don't give a flying fudge how old a game is so long as it's fun.
@Elodin I'd rather have my 2018/2019 version and not have to buy it again. I'm not a brobude, graphics aren't all that important if a game is good. That said no I'm not interested in this game, but I really dislike these practices which are becoming increasingly commonplace nowadays.
Hard pass.
Always online?! No thanks, I'm already having connection issues in MH World just by trying to get into a hunt with other players, I don't need the stress of trying of constantly getting error messages every time I even attempt to even boot up Anthem. I play games to relieve stress, not become even more stressed out.
EA can go to hell!
The multiplayer/coop part seems to be more like monster hunter. I think one issue with having other players jumping around could be that it might break immersion. Imagine you slowly walk through some dangerous area that just looks terrifying, and then you see another dude just jumping around as if it’s nothing.
I love the immersive world of monster hunter world, so if the experience will go into that direction, I am absolutely happy
Tbf, I don't think Bioware has done a lot of games where it had PvP. So maybe that's not their thing.
No thanks, Anthem will bomb and they will wonder why...
I really don't get it, sounds like they are saying this just to appeal every gamer out there. If I choose to play as a single-player experience, I will still encounter other players around the world, right?
Looks like that it's really awful to play games like Destiny and The Division as single-player. Another example is Ghost Recon Wildlands, it was really boring to play alone, the game was made to be a cooperative experience.
@PS_Nation it’s more like monster hunter. You can head out alone, or you head out with matchmaking, or friends, or you join a session of some random player. But outside of that you won’t see other players running around if you are not in their game session.
Or like Diablo 3, where you don’t see other players unless you are part of their session/party.
I'm sorry to say that all of the details released yesterday have pushed ANTHEM into my "Avoid at Launch, Maybe Grab When Cheap" category. Especially if I can only play the core story by myself, and large parts of the game are exclusively co-operative, meaning I can't access them.
With all the reassurances from BioWare ahead of E3, I so desperately wanted to love this and be excited by it, but... well, yeah.
My problem with "always-online" single-player games stems from PC gaming...for example, all of my Games For Windows Live games won't launch at all (since the service is gone). Granted, the games are 7+ years old at this point, but it's still annoying. Not "I won't buy this game just because of this!"-annoying, however.
As for this game, I think Bioware has done a horrible job of being specific about what this game is. Like they really need better examples of how being-online makes for a better experience from a single-player standpoint (the whole dynamic-world thing)!
I'm more interested in this than I was before, but I will wait and see how much single player content. If it is more like Destiny I will give this miss. I rather get Days Gone before Anthem.
I don't get people dismissing games cos they are online only. If it is fun surely it doesn't matter. If you are gonna wait that long to play games, well you snooze you lose.
It does remind me so much of Andromeda except the best thing about ME:A is the fun you can have with all the biotic/tech powers and combos. Anthem looks to be mostly about the pew pew.
I presume they'll be social hubs like Destiny where you can see your created character's lovely chops? It would be a bit pointless to create a character then cover him/her up in all that fancy jetpack armour.

The game looks super fun, but the online emphasis means this is a no go for me.
