The more we see of Naughty Dog’s games, the more we realise they’re an optical illusion. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is no different, and this video showcasing the sequel’s iconic train level is eye-opening. It reveals how the set-piece works: by placing you on a gigantic loop. It then masks environmental changes with various camera tricks, giving the impression that you’re actually travelling.
While the above video does ruin the magic a little bit, it’s also fascinating. Like, all of the tricks and techniques that the developer uses here make sense, but they’re so devious that we never even thought about them while playing the campaign. Really amazing stuff.

They lied?!
@Neolit I worked in a quality butchers from age 15-18. Cleaning mostly but I got to make sausages. Get your pork, mince it up with some stale bread, mix it all up in a bowl with some rusk and choice hurbs and spices, get your intestines hooked up to your machine and start pumping your sausage meat through. Then tie em off. Lovely stuff.
I love decent sausages.
Uncharted 2: Sausage Land
That tagline 😂😂😂
Amazing what they achieved with 512MB (well, 256MB) of RAM back then.
It was obvious - otherwise the train would reach the destination or not be in right place depending on how quick/slow the player was for those transitional phases. Its not just ND that would have these 'loops' either - not unless the situation is timed - i.e you had to reach certain stages by certain times or fail and reaching them 'early' can trigger a 'cut-scene' which then shifts the vehicle ahead to the next section. If you don't have the 'loop', the journey has to be time restricted.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Saus-
Wait a minute.
The old Scooby Doo trick eh?
Really interesting and still really impressive. Uncharted 2 was nuts.
Found this absolutely fascinating. Any other videos like this that people can recommend?

Some really cool insights into how games are designed if that's what you're looking for.

@Neolit the meat comes from Tesco duhhh
It's crazy that Uncharted 2 will almost complete ten years already. One of the best games ever made.
@hubertuss03 Never believe stories like this. They're almost always fake.
@ShogunRok awesome, will do.
I thought it was real life. What the heck digital foundry ruining my fun. Next you will be telling me Kratos isnt the God of War beating up all those other gods, next you will be telling us god isnt real and life is all a repeating circle of events on a really long loop. Next you will be telling us we are all a part of a big simulation and we need a better graphics card.
Let us all remember these techniques when we create our own games and levels on Dreams! 😁
@themcnoisy You mean... Kratos isn't real?!
@themcnoisy here's the kicker.... You are the graphics card, boom...
Uncharted is my favourite game series though I think U4 story took itself a bit too seriously with all this 'big brother back from the dead'
(and conveniently) with a serious treasure related problem requiring a globe trotting mission. He could have simply had a gambling debt/STD/alimony/transgender problem.
@get2sammyb
Yeah, i know
