Not to be confused with Horizon: Zero Dawn, old-school arcade racer Horizon Chase Turbo finally has a PlayStation 4 release date: 15th May. Despite its Stunt FX-esque rudimentary polygonal visuals, this looks closer to Outrun in terms of gameplay, as you drift your way through a rotating backdrop inspired by locations around the world.
In addition to a single player world tour mode, the title will also include local multiplayer for up to four people. It'll cost $19.99 at launch, and you can learn a little more about it on its official website. Will you be putting your foot down and picking this up? I played Horizon Chase on Android and enjoyed it despite crappy touch controls. I'm keen to see how it plays with a real controller - should be a good arcade racer.
Stunt FX visuals is a bit disingenuous, by the way...
On one hand I'd like to buy it because games like Cruis'n USA are few and far between, but at $20 I'll wait for a flash sale. I have it on my iPad and while fun, the price for upgraded visuals and local multiplayer doesn't make it appealing :/
Can anyone recommend a good PS4/Switch game that is similar to Cruis'n? I have tried looking occasionally but never can find a good game/series that people enjoy. Any help is appreciated!
@Pink_Floyd if you mean a 2D racer that appears to be 3D but is actually just 2D masquerading as 3D (like most racers in the 80s) then I think Horizon Chase is the first of it's kind (there is Neon Drive but it's more of a rhythm game).
Thematically, The Crew seems to be the closest thing to a modern Cruisin'
A bit pricey for a mobile port.
Love the look of this. Yes please. Although I'm probably gonna get the Switch version.
Always chose 'Magical Sound Shower' myself....
A five bucks purchase for me.
Speaking of great old car games, I'd love another go on this
Anybody else see the banner screenshot and immediately think of the Samba de Amigo courses from Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing?
@kyleforrester87 Man I LOVED that game back in the day!
@hi_drnick This isn't 2d trying to be 3d. The 80s games as Outrun worked on pseudo 3d, projecting the road as lines and segments and scaling 2d sprites todo look 3d. This is full realtime 3d.
Here's antes article on pseudo 3d racing games: http://www.extentofthejam.com/pseudo/
@jmbenetti thanks for the link. I guess what I was getting at is that in racing games such as Outrun and Horizon Chase you can't re-orient the direction of your car or drive in reverse (hence, it's not really three dimensional) as you can in modern racers. I guess I didn't explain it in quite the right manner.
@Futureshark Magical Sound Shower is the only sensible choice.
19.99 is too expensive for a polished phone game imo, so if it's any good, I'll wait for a sale.
