God of War games have, historically, been tight 10 hour experiences that could be completed in a handful of sittings. But the franchise’s forthcoming PlayStation 4 soft-reboot is not a traditional entry in the franchise – and it’s going to take you a significant number of hours to complete. According to director Cory Barlog, you may be looking at 40 hours plus if you plan to do everything.
“One of the systems designers just did his full playthrough to get 100 per cent,” he told Kinda Funny. “So that's literally doing every single thing in the entire game, and he played 43 hours. 43 hours and he knows what to do!” It’s worth mentioning that there are lots of side-activities to complete throughout the campaign, so you’ll be able to finish the core storyline quicker.
Still, this is shaping up to be the biggest God of War game by quite some margin – even if the team didn’t originally intend it to be. “I think I just deflected for several years and just pretended,” he concluded. “And then we did our first sort of full gameplay test and it took five days, and we were like, ‘Oh, man. Alright, what have we done?’”

Excelent!
Can't wait for this one! Game of the Year I'm almost sure
@AFCC Definitely God of the Year.
@Enuo and beard of the year!
gimme gimmie gimmie
Probably looking at 15-20 hours then for the main storyline
"43hrs and he knows what to do!" 😂 maybe he was taking his time.
@Enuo Nope.
@doctommaso Care to elaborate?
I'm not complaining 👌🏾 can't wait !!!
That's really great for an action game like God of War, I'm really interested about the side-quests.
Wow, it’s a tad long. I thought if I got it wouldn’t be so much... does anyone else like having a game that’s not super long and you finish it so you’re done? Like Uncharted. Games are getting long too often.
@Jaz007 Yeah, I honestly don’t mind a shorter game. Uncharted Lost Legacy was brilliant and only 8 hrs long. As long as the game doesn’t feel bloated with filler, then long can work too. 40 hrs is probably about average now. That’s about what an average playthrough of Horizon Zero Dawn is.
Man it suck that only region 2 version get steelcase without statue version of the game, I think I'll go digital with this game if I can't get the steelcase version.
@Enuo @AFCC Dad of the Year
Certainly getting our moneys worth then. No season pass and 40 hours to do everything. Its like we have gone back in time
I'm super excited for this. I might not be able to play it on release though because I want to finish my play through of the Uncharted games first (currently on Chapter 6 of Uncharted 2). And then I'm gonna play all the other God of War games to get me ready for this one. Got a long road ahead of me!
@Jaz007 I'm with you man. I get about an hour of gaming max a day so for me a game like uncharted takes about 2 weeks to complete. Persona 5 was an amazing game but after a while I started to lose interest as it kept going on and on
@Enuo Hint: We just celebrated Easter.
And this is a good reason why I'll wait to play God of War.
This definitely ain't God of War to me
@Jaz007
As long as it doesn't feel like the game's length is extended artificially through nonsensical filler, I'm ok with a game taking 40 or more hours. I sunk over 110 into Horizon: Zero Dawn and loved every second. Likewise, of more recent games I've played, Bayonetta 1 and 2 took about 10-12 hours each and I had a blast with those as well. All depends on the content. This new GoW looks awesome, can't wait to finally give it a go.
10hours just doesn't cut it anymore for a full priced game - at least not for 'just' a single player with no online co-op/MP modes to offer 'more'.
43hrs may sound like a 'long' time but Horizon:Zero Dawn took me 75hrs to get platinum. Games like Assassins Creed: Origins, Witcher 3, etc were over 100hours (to do 'everything') and after 40hours in Far Cry 5, I am not even 'half way' with so many quests to do.
I am still looking forward to this and pre-ordered it a while back but I do think that even 40hrs is not a 'lot' for a game these days. A lot of AAA games have 100's of hours these days - if not from just the single player but as a 'complete' package so games like CoD or even Uncharted 4 have MP modes that offer longevity.
I think all the AAA games I have played in recent months have given me at least 100hours without touching any online MP modes.
@Jaz007 If you're ignoring the optional areas and boss fights, you're probably looking at something closer to 20 hours.
@Jaz007 I'm leaning to these shorter experiences more and more. I can't fathom playing a singleplayer game for like two or three months. That's how long it would take you to beat some games if you have limited time for games. I played Witcher 3 for about a whole month and I started losing grip on the story. If you are nolifing so you can dedicate 5 or more hours a day to playing that single game then it's manageable but otherwise not so much. I'm a guy who simply cannot ignore side quest even if they are tedious so sometimes I get bored doing all of that, it becomes a chore and that's not the way it's meant to be.
@Jaz007 Yeah, I like games that are around 13-20 hours in this genre. The thing is, a lot of this stuff may be optional side quests, but I find it hard to skip past them so they don't feel optional.
@NecuVise Same here. As I'm getting older I can't seem to be able to get a momentum going for open world RPG anymore. Similar to you I played Witcher 3 a lot for about a month, got pretty tired of it and haven't touched it since. I ended up finished Horizon but that was a pretty short open world game.
If a game is fun, like Witcher 3, Ac origins, or HZD why would u want it to be shorter? I'm playing through Witcher 3 atm and definitely feel I'm getting my money's worth. I hate when a good game ends and hope they release dlc for it.
It all depends on the quality. If God of War earns that running time, then it’s all good IMO.
Over 40 playa💪💗💖💕.oh yeah this masterpiece is going to be legendary .kratos is back with an axe and a son .thor better run.ready for war.its the god of war.word up son
I've never played a God of War game and thought to myself, "This would be better if it was four times as long." But then this doesn't look like an ordinary God of War game, so perhaps the new style will benefit from a longer running time.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I’m 20-21 (just don’t feel like giving an exact age online). JRPGs have always been long though. Stuff like GoW usually is shorter.
That sounds great for a 100% run, but I hope the story doesn't go too far past 15 hours. Some plots can overstay their welcome.
@RegularGameFan Also Axe of the Year
To be honest I was sort of expecting a lengthier game, it would be hard to sell a 10-12 hour single-player game for the asking price. The game's concept implies a lengthier game as well. In any case: great!!! now I want to play it even more.
This is great news! Now to get off my bum and resume playing God of War II HD on my PS3 lol.
