New details have surfaced regarding Cyberpunk 2077, the upcoming project from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red. During the company's latest financial presentation, president Adam Kiciński dropped a few comments on what we can expect from the game, and it sounds ambitious to say the least.
First off, Kiciński confirms that there will be some form of character creation, so you won't be charging around as a predetermined character like Geralt, for example. You'll also choose a character class, supposedly allowing you to specialise in certain skills and abilities.
Next, Kiciński doubles down on the title's single player experience. Much like The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 will feature a huge story -- and that's currently the studio's primary focus. However, multiplayer is still something that the developer is looking into. Apparently, even a battle royale mode could happen -- Kiciński says that everything up for consideration, but he's not prepared to talk about anything specific just yet.
As has been rumoured for a while, it seems as though CD Projekt Red will indeed have something to show at E3 2018. During the presentation, Kiciński says that it's coming "just before" the event. We assume that means Cyberpunk 2077 will be present at one of the big press conferences.

''Kiciński confirms that there will be some form of character creation, so you won't be charging around as a predetermined character like Geralt, for example.''
That's a bummer honestly. I always prefer predetermined characters. I couldn't care less about character creation, to me it comes off as cheap, as if the developers themselves couldn't come up with a good looking design they're confident in. User created player characters are often less involved with the story, or at least that's how it seems to me. Certainly they aren't going to record a million lines with a bunch of different voice actors! Well, anyway, user created characters aren't as memorable as predetermined characters, that's for sure.
@Octane I think you're going to get a Commander Shepard scenario, where you're free to determine how your character looks and what they do, but you're locked into a specific role in the story.
I know where you're coming from, but at this point I see no reason to doubt CD Projekt Red's ability to write characters, original or not.
Not being forced to play as a predetermined character is great. It should go well with the likely large of amount of choices and role-playing to be had!
Honestly, part of what's putting me off TW3 is that I just don't like Geralt's design, and don't really want to have to stare at it for 100+ hours. That and fantasy isn't really my thing.
The more we hear about this, the more it sounds like a day one buy for me!
I love a good character creation but because this is CD Projekt Red I'd prefer a set specific character from them to play as. I know a lot of characters from The Witcher games were from the books but CDPR created brilliant original characters like Gaunter O'Dimm and the Bloody Baron.
The stuff about multiplayer and battle royale can go right in the bin.
@Octane Yeah, I agree actually. I much prefer a predetermined character. I think we're in the minority, though.
@ShogunRok I feel the same. The Shepard example is a great one. I really felt it was a grounded character and was surprised every time one of my friends talked about her using male pronouns.
However, Shepard is a rare example!
This has game of the decade written all over it.
@Octane Yeah, this. I don't want to create my own characters in story heavy games, especially in rpg.
I’ve been eagerly anticipating this for a while. From what I understand of the world and the likelihood of an enormous multiplayer component, I think character creation sounds like a good fit. I do agree that our most memorable characters are not user generated but the well written and creatively designed ones (see the ongoing VG Character tournament for examples) but for many games the ability to at least create the appearance you want has a beneficial effect of emotional investment.
I have no issue with creating your own character in a story driven RPG or having you play as a pre-determined character either. Both have their merits...
@ShogunRok I don't doubt their writing. I just prefer predetermined characters. I don't really care about who they are and how they look, but it helps to give the game (and the main character) a sense of identity. Having this weird blank slate. I dunno. We shall see.
Can't wait. After the failure of Mass Effect Andromeda, I hope this game can pick up the mantle.
I.WANT.IT.NOW!
Considering it's based on a pen & paper tabletop RPG, character creation is kind of in keeping with the whole sub genre. Many RPGs manage to tell great stories without predetermined characters. Baldurs Gate, etc just off the top of my head.
I understand what people are saying about voice actors though.
... this definitely isn't seeing the light of day until PS5... (Xbox720?)
no set character has made me feel a bit crap they did so well with Geralt was hoping for the next one to be special as well
I just want to play as robot babe with knife arms
Really looking forward to seeing this!
@ShogunRok shepXwitcher... We'll plough, okay?
@OneManDroid they've been farting around with Gwent for far too long.
Character creation in games is basically my favorite thing EVER! I assumed this would be like the witcher. I was already so damn excited for this game. Now i .... I dont even know. Im exploding with hype!
I have been hyped about Cyberpunk 2077 from the first trailer. I believe CD Projekt Red has said CyberPunk 2077 will be on current and next gen systems.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Perfect
I'm currently playing through The Witcher 2 with a view to replaying number 3 and then finally getting round to the DLC, so to say I'm excited about Cyberpunk would be an understatement. Not sure how I feel about having to create a character as Geralt is so integral to how great the Witcher 3 became. Having said that I've now seen fists hand how well they handled the transition from a linear experience of 2 to the open world of 3 without seemingly sacrificing anything when it came to story telling, so I trust it'll be magnificent either way
@Octane It's interesting to hear you say how the "blank slate" character creation can't be a character that's been written for in a game. The character is a character, the creation of looks is just a skin. Even with Geralt (and Aloy to a lesser degree), you had choices of how to play him; save the innocent, let them die, etc. Whether it was Geralt is irrelevant (subtracting the previous games and game based on a book character) it's still a character written within a controlled universe that you get to become--Geralt.
I'm guessing it might be more a Commander Shep situation. I'm fine with that. I loved my FemShep (@Kidfried you mean there are male Sheps ). I like creating my own characters. I feel more invested in them for some reason. Plus, being an older woman gamer, I grew up not having much choice in the overly male dominated character days, so I take it when I can get it!
@starhops Well, the main character can be a woman, as long as there's no character creator I'm fine with that too lol.
'battle royale mode could happen — Kiciński says'.... Ohh don't go for the mainstream!! Make your own CD Red!
@Octane bruh you cant make a pen and paper rpg like this with a pre set main character, trust me this game is going to shake up the industry
@bbtothe I'm pretty sure they're making a video game and not a board game
@Octane haha of course, but its roots and inspiration are in p&p, at least thats the info we've had for a while
@starhops FemShep only for me!
As I see it, you can use character creation in a game in 3 main ways — to make the protagonist look like A) yourself, B) your ideal self (Take away the imperfections and put a splash of Liam Hemsworth and voila, an attractive version of yourself), or C) your ideal version of what you’re attracted to.
When I made my Commander Sheppard I went with option A — tried to make him look as close to me as possible, and with the tools at the time, he ended up looking like me if my face had been disfigured by an industrial accident. But, eh... oh well- he was mine, and over the course of the series he grew on me.
...And it was then that I realized that there was a reason why I had never been approached to model for a video game character design.
@Th3solution
D) The most outrageous, weird broken thing possible.... It can't just be me that does this!
Wishlist — way fewer cutscenes and errand quests than W3. Won’t happen.
Really looking forward to this one. Cyberpunk is my go-to genre when it comes to reading and writing sci-fi. WestWoods Bladerunner was a cracking game. Deus-ex however didn't click with me though, I felt it went a bit too far with the augmentation.
Realy looking forward to this game!! Is me or are there more 'older' gamers like me who think of snes shadowrun when they read about cyberpunk?
@Ralizah I played TW3 for 100+ hours and honestly I found Geralt to be incredibly boring. It's an incredible game, and deserves all the praise, but I just couldn't take to it.
I always played as FemShep, but then, 9 times out of 10, I'll play as the female option when given the choice. Games force me to play as men often enough, so I like to diversify who I'm playing as once in a while.
@Johnnycide It's always the risk with pre-established characters. And, you know, TW3 is part of a series based on novels where the identity of the main character is important, so it makes sense that you played as an established character. But character creation can work so well with role-playing. It's one reason why I've never been a huge fan of the EO Untold games, for example: they replace character-created parties with generic anime people, and it's just not as fun or ultimately memorable for me.
Gald they made the effort to give charcter creation this time. The main reason why i did not enjoy The Witcher 3 was the lack of charcter creation. I did not feel any connection or care about the charcter as a result of not being able to create the character.
@Th3solution
E) A character to match the game you are playing...
@starhops @CountFunkula78 Yeah, I like doing the outrageous character sometimes. My Bloodborne character has silvery blue hair that stands straight up like his head is aburst with a white-blue flames, something I’d never do to myself. And I of course covered him with scars all over his face because, well... it fits the game. (But he is still a handsome chap, I must say)
I love following the protagonist in story telling games. For example Red dead redemption, Last of Us, TW3, Horizon ZD, God of war. There's like a connection of understanding how the character feels and getting drawn into their persona. If any of the games I've mentioned just allowed a random character etc like Borderlands, dragon age inquisition, monster Hunter, Skyrim then I feel the world and game mechanics take focus and I don't really care if the chars live or die. Atm... I guess Cyberpunk is giving freedom to replay the game with different classes much like the RPG dice and pencil game. Can't wait to see the game in action!
@Th3solution My MH:World character has a big scar running down her face from forehead to cheek. Hey, those monsters are rough!
