The nominees for the British Academy Games Awards 2018 have been announced, and it's Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice that receives the most nods with nine nominations. It's in the running for categories such as Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Game Beyond Entertainment, and even Best Game.
Horizon: Zero Dawn is hot on its heels, however, receiving eight nominations of its own. Guerrilla's beloved action RPG is in many of the same categories as Hellblade, but is also up for Game Design and Original Property.
The whole list of nominees is interesting, as it's a very strong mix of AAA and indie titles. What Remains of Edith Finch, Night in the Woods, and The Sexy Brutale are up for awards alongside much bigger games like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Call of Duty: WWII, and Assassin's Creed Origins.

Great list of nominees, I think. Hellblade will do well here.
Wow, strong showing for What Remains of Edith Finch and Night in the Woods also. Nice.
Playing through Hellblade now and I love it!
Come on Hellblade, Edith Finch and Night In the Woods. Loved all three of these games!
Hellblade is currently Deal of the Week on the EU PSN Store (£15.49)
Great timing
Great to see Hellblade getting some nominations - such a brilliant game in just about every sense.
YAS! Get those awards, Hellblade.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I think it’s because it fits the theme...
Think Nintendo will take a good portion of the awards again?
Hellblade will win a lot because it's British! And rightly so!
Why is Horizon not up for Artistic Achievement?
@NintendoFan4Lyf There are unconfirmed reports that Hellblade is coming to XB1 so you may get the full Dolby Atmos audio on that system. The Taiwan Game Software Rating Information board has rated Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice for Xbox One. A new rating for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was also posted by the Australian Classification board too so it looks like it 'could' be coming. According to Ninja Theory, the main reason it didn't come to Xbox initially was down to Studio size - that they didn't have the staff to make it for all platforms...
Great news for Hellblade and Horizon, two incredible games.
As an aside, how cool is it that five of the six Performer nominees are women? Fingers tightly crossed for Ashly Burch or Claudia Black, I'm not sure I could make a judgement call between the two of them!
This is such a great list of nominees at first glance. But there were two things I was really surprised by:
The category Music. So... where are Persona 5 and Nier: Automata?
Speaking about those games, it feels like Japanese games are seriously underrepresented here. I thought 2017 was the year of Resident Evil 7, Yakuza 0, Persona 5 among others. They've got 0 nominees. Blind spot much?
@Splat After reading your comment I double checked, and it turns out I missed it out! Fixed now. Thanks for bringing that to my attention
@NintendoFan4Lyf Atmos is definitely the future of Audio - especially with Gaming and VR. Movies have used Atmos for a while now to improve the immersive audio experience and with games, its the next step. I bet the PS5 will have Atmos!!
@NintendoFan4Lyf I am looking at replacing my AV receiver in the near future - I want one with eARC capability so I can pass Atmos via the TV. I know I can connect devices directly into the amp and pass the image through but with Game VRR and potentially HFR, I don't want to have to keep upgrading my receiver. I can see Game VRR requiring a direct connection to tell the TV to refresh with each new frame - that connection and communication will be important. The AV receivers would need HDMI 2.1 to pass 4k HFR through as 2.0 is only good up to 60fps so rather than upgrade my AV receiver - as long as it has eARC, It won't matter if I pass uncompressed audio (no loss in quality) through the TV - especially as it also auto syncs. 5.1.2 is more than adequate for my needs. All my viewing is done within a 3m square (the room is longer but only one end is used for viewing/gaming)
Anyway, this is getting a bit off topic but just thought you might want to know that Hellblade 'could' be coming to Xbox in the near future and maybe with Atmos too...
Go Horizon Zero Dawn!
And a best game award without pubg, thank you very much Bafta.
But you still missed Persona 5...
@Kidfried I would include Gravity Rush 2 as well, another incredible Japanese game released last year. It's really lame how they ignore many games from Japan on these awards
@PS_Nation well... that’s not Nintendo
@Kidfried well that’s not Nintendo cus they still are a Japanese Company (& oh they show you they are a Japanese Company xD)
@Derpie1 Well, yes. But I think it's apparent that many Japanese games get left out as well.
@PS_Nation I love Gravity Rush 2! I have to admit I constantly forget it's a 2017 game. With the servers closing this summer and it's early in the year release, it feels like an older game.
@Kidfried ofc kinda amazing The Game Awards is a little better here even if Horizon got no awards & P5 got only ONE.
@Derpie1 Agree, I'm more hopeful for Horizon at the BAFTA's though!
@Kidfried dunno if the trend will be broken much maybe a few I can see Horizon winning but I think the power of the Ancient IP & nostalgic love will prob win... (idc who wins truly I’m just saying something)
@Kidfried
Bafta is always like this. 3DS never happened and they focus on Western IPs. Last year was one of the strongest for Japanese gaming and we have like 5 nominees here.
Go Night In The Woods! Currently replaying this after all the updates.
