The PlayStation 4 is home to a vast library role-playing games. From MMOs and open world epics to niche Japanese releases and traditional adventures stuffed with text, there's something for just about everyone. It's an expansive genre in which East meets West, and we see numerous takes a similar formula. As with anything, though, some titles are better than others, and so we've put together what we think are the 30 best RPGs on PS4.

30: Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Publisher: Bandai Namco
Developer: Bandai Namco
Release date: 2nd February, 2016 (NA), 5th February, 2016 (EU)

Easily the best Digimon game that the West's received in a long, long time, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth sees you investigate virtual reality phenomenons with digital monsters by your side. The rough and ready critters are yours to raise, train, and turn into weapons of mass destruction, making this a hugely addictive turn based RPG.

29: Dragon Quest Heroes II

Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Omega Force
Release date: 25th April, 2017 (NA), 28th April, 2017 (EU)

If you like an emphasis on action in your action RPG, then you can do a lot worse than Dragon Quest Heroes II. This is essentially a Warriors title set in the magical world of Dragon Quest, but it leans heavily on the RPG side of things with party members, levelling, loot, and quests. Combat's accessible but punchy, and wiping out whole armies of monsters with a single earth-shattering strike never gets old.

28: Toukiden 2

Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Developer: Omega Force
Release date: 21st March, 2017 (NA), 24th March, 2017 (EU)

The definition of a bigger and better sequel, Toukiden 2 builds upon everything that the first game got right. While the beast slaying isn't quite up there with the super satisfying action of Monster Hunter, Toukiden 2 offers up a more traditional RPG experience, presenting a lengthy story complete with a cast of interesting characters. Its open world's eerily atmospheric, too, and overall, this is one of Omega Force's best titles to date.

27: Tales of Berseria

Publisher: Bandai Namco
Developer: Namco Tales Studio
Release date: 24th January, 2017 (NA), 27th January, 2017 (EU)

Just about the best Tales game on PS4, Tales of Berseria tells a relatively mature tale of betrayal, revenge, and hate. It's not often that we get to play as villains, but calling lead character Velvet and the gang good guys is a definite stretch. This is an action RPG that has you embrace evil in order to defeat evil, and it's a memorable journey because of that. It also helps that the combat system is fast, furious, and a ton of fun.

26: Valkyria Chronicles Remastered

Publisher: SEGA
Developer: SEGA
Release date: 17th May, 2016

Given a well deserved second chance on the PS4, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered brings the PS3 classic to a new generation, and it still stands tall as a fantastic strategy RPG. SEGA took a chance with its strange hybrid blend of tactical planning and third-person shooting, but it all pays off when you're executing the perfect battle plan. Touching character moments also help elevate the story far beyond its "evil empire is bad" premise.

25: Dragon Quest Builders

Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix
Release date: 11th October, 2016 (NA), 14th October, 2016 (EU)

A streamlined take on the crafting adventure genre, Dragon Quest Builders stands out thanks to its various RPG elements. There's a slight emphasis on combat here, and a more involved story that sees you creating bastions of hope in a world that's been swallowed by darkness. As you'd expect of the parent property, it gushes charm and character, and overall, the title sports a really rewarding sense of progression.

24: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Publisher: Bethesda
Developer: Zenimax Online Studios
Release date: 9th June, 2015

Set aside several months of your life, because you're going to need a lot of free time to cover The Elder Scrolls Online's unbelievably gigantic map. One of the best MMORPGs on the PS4, Tamriel Unlimited continues to balloon in size and scope thanks to the developer's unwavering support. With or without friends, there's a seemingly endless amount of adventure on offer here, and there's no mandatory subscription fee, either.

23: Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition

Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
Developer: Larian Studios
Release date: 27th October, 2015

A traditional Western RPG of rather epic proportions, Divinity: Original Sin blends tactical combat with a massive amount of player choice. Stories stop, start, and branch off depending on your actions, and there's a huge fantasy world that's yours to explore. You can even experience the entire adventure with another player by your side, as the game supports both online and offline co-op.

22: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: BioWare
Release date: 18th November, 2014 (NA), 21st November, 2014 (EU)

BioWare may have lost its edge over the last few years, but Dragon Age: Inquisition is still one of the best Western RPGs on PS4. Its main draw is its great cast of characters, every single one of them bringing something different to the table. Sprinkle a healthy helping of player choice on top of solid writing, and you've got a fantasy adventure that's begging for your input as the Inquisition seeks to leave its mark on the land of Thedas.

21: Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster

Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix
Release date: 12th May, 2015 (NA), 15th May, 2015 (EU)

A defining moment for RPGs back in the PS2 era, Final Fantasy X is packed with emotion and memorable characters. Its somewhat traditional gameplay has stood the test of time, and going up against the many open world RPGs of today, its linear approach is actually quite refreshing, especially since it allows the story and cast to push to the forefront of the experience. The divisive but still fun Final Fantasy X-2 is merely the icing on the cake here.
