Sony’s stance on cross-play has always been pretty firm: you can play with other platforms as long as they’re not a competitor. And today’s Fortnite: Battle Royale announcement for mobile has brought with it some big news for PlayStation 4 players: cross-play and cross-progression is coming across PS4, PC, Mac, iOS, and eventually Android. Big news!
According to developer Epic Games, you’ll be able to buddy up with pals across all of the above platforms. This means that, yes, the smartphone version is identical to the console release. “Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates,” the studio said. “We believe this is the future of games. Play when you want, where you want.”
Fortnite has been blowing up recently, attracting major mainstream attention from news outlets and celebrities. And frequent iteration from Epic Games means that it’s starting to bite into PUBG’s considerably sized pie. It’s going to be interesting watching these two giants duke it out from here, because Bluehole’s clearly now got a battle on its hands.

WTF? Ios and Android? Oh boy...that's going to be fun (probably terrible to play without a controller so easier targets I guess)!
BTW how many gigs does a game like this take on a cellphone?
I hear a lot about Fortnite, a lot of my friends play it. Not my type of game though.
So Xbox isn't included?
I have so many friends that play Fortnite on Xbox and I just want to squad up with them but NOPE 👎
Sony: Everything but you xbox lol
I hope there's option to play with only ps4 players though, I don't want to play with people using trainer on pc and android.
Edit: Now that I think about it, maybe it is microsoft that didn't want to cross-play with steam considering steam is their competitor on pc platform.
@wiiware we already play with PC players now
@MrOso like I said in the other reply...we already play with pc players on ps4!
And I have some wins so it's ok, the aim assist makes up for it!
@MrOso but when you duo with someone on pc (I do it often) can't you get other duos with pc players??
@MadAussieBloke yeah, that's cool! But imagine playing on touchscreen
Fortnite - the little game that could.
@MadAussieBloke I don't know this game being free brings a lot of kids
It makes sense to not allow cross-play with direct competitors. If a person wants a XBO and wants to play online with his friends, but they only own a PS4, that person will probably end up buying a PS4. I strongly disapprove this tactic, but it's yet another way to keep the PS4 selling.
@Matthewxcv Correct!
@AFCC Yeah, I know. Are there any rampant cheating like pubg in fortnite? I want to try it on ps4 but I don't want to face cheater.
I think that Sony should consider PC a competitor, or consoles could become irrelevant, imo.
Anyway, cross-play was always available on Playstation platforms, no surprise here.
Time to start playing Fortnite on Android so I can wreck my friends on PS4 and destroy everyone on all platforms, PC included.
I shall crush the cross-platform leaderboards, see my enemies driven before me and hear the lamentation of the devs that a player on a mobile device has conquered all else.
I actually have no interest in the game. But it's neat to see cross-play across so many platforms.
I played it at launch and haven't played since, but my son enjoys it and does quite well. I'll watch him play from time to time and am amazed at the strategy involved...as well as how quick he puts up structures. We'll see how well he does against PC players.
Hope there's a way to filter out mobile players, not eager to play against laggy opponents.
Will be super interesting to see whether m/kb PC players are TRULY better than console joypad players. This I've heard but never seen it occur in reality!
@PS_Nation I think it's about the audience for the games. The most played/best selling games on pc is moba, free to play and indies game, the best selling games on nintendo platform is nintendo own games, but for AAA games people usually buy it on ps or xbox platform, most people buy the newest cod/fifa/assassin creed/3rd party AAA games on either ps or xbox, the two machine is in direct competition with each other while the pc is not.
@wiiware Um you sent that 5 times lol
Look who’s being petty not including Xbox to cross-play after all the discussions about MS wanting to work with Sony so they both can have their players playing together for the very first time. So what if MS was going to make PS players sign up with an Xbox Live account, it’s hardly going to make them suddenly buy an Xbox console and leave PS behind.
@SKC_Diamond There's problem with either pushsquare or my internet connection lol
@MaccaMUFC The problem with cross-play between console is nobody in the lead want to play nice with their competitor, microsoft don't want it previous gen, sony don't want it this gen.
Pc has advantage over console, everyone has advantage over mobiles. Cross play is nice but its not a equal playing field.
@wiiware Well both MS and Sony should stop thinking about themselves and just give what their players want, servers for some games could last longer if there’s a bigger player base playing on different consoles, also there could be a possibility of having dedicated servers of 100 vs 100 on battle royale games like Fortnite and PUBG if MS and Sony banged their heads together but it’s never going to happen anyway because one or the other has to be awkward.
Nest. I was surprised when XBO didn’t have it too.
Love how Xbox's was left out. Maybe they shouldn't have got into bed with PUBG then.
It is what it is. Microsoft started this generation by not allowing cross platform play, which is why Final Fantasy XIV (amazing game by the way, even with subscription costs) is on Sony's console and not Microsoft's. People tend to forget that it was Microsoft that started this narrative. It wasn't until Sony got a 30+ million lead in sales that Microsoft changed their tune.
@wiiware on ps4 there isn't any cheating (I think)!
I've never encountered nothing dubious in my games but I don't know! The game is really fun, especially if you have a friend to play with you
@TheTetrisGuy... Then why aren't you on xbox?
@viciousarcanum I’m not getting an Xbox to play one game with friends😂
@AFCC It seems if you play normally, you only matched against ps4 player, same with mobile, it's a great system. I think I'll try it tonight
@wiiware I took like 3 to 4 weeks before I won my first game! So my best tip is to stick with it...I now get wins regularly (when i'm not just running and gunning lol)
