Digital Foundry's had its say on Dynasty Warriors 9, and unsurprisingly, the tech heads aren't impressed. The publication cuts to the chase quickly, stating that Dynasty Warriors 9 is probably the "worst performing game we've seen to date" on the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Yikes.
The bottom line is that the game can barely maintain a steady 30 frames per second no matter how you play. The title offers two performance settings: action and movie. Action promises a more stable frame rate, while movie offers a better resolution. Again, neither is able to hold at 30fps -- movie mode sits below 20fps for extended periods while action mode fluctuates between 40 and 20. In short, it's a total mess.
As you'd expect, things are even worse when playing on a standard PlayStation 4, with the frame rate dipping even lower. It's just not good enough for a game that's so heavy on action. Digital Foundry goes on to say that in movie mode, Dynasty Warriors 9 borders on unplayable at times.
Whether you're a fan of Dynasty Warriors or not, it's safe to say that we all deserve better than this from a fully priced retail product.

Framerates don't matter, though. The narrative is the most important part.
It looks to play fine outside of all those numbers, when looking at just the gameplay. All this number mumbo jumbo is getting annoying. As long as it doesn't stall or crash I don't care
@Radbot42 Sorry but we deserve better than 14fps in a $60 action game. Passive attitudes to stuff like this just reinforce the idea that performance doesn't matter in games, when it really does.
You might not like the numbers and the more in-depth approach, but let's not settle for less.
@get2sammyb in any Hyper action game, frame rate is the key factor. Don't accept mediocre performance, otherwise companies will feel like they can slack off and get away with it.
I would say 30 fps is the minimum we should have, always!
Anyway this game is a total shame! But I feel like Japan (China too?) doesn't care about framerates and graphics as much as the west
That’s the problem with spamming thousands of identical characters on screen at the same time.
After seeing how well Samurai Warriors did at being made for the PS4, I'm sad to hear that.
Didn't fallout 4 hit 0 frames per second on these tests in the xbox version?
@Eternallover21 @TheHatredDMC At this juncture I think it's worth pointing out that Sammy's joking. He's not that stupid!
@Eternallover21 Then we're all good!
At least it released on time, right?
Looks better on a CEO's desk to have the game out on time so you can start making profit instead of a letter saying the game needs to be delayed due to technical issues.
Did they say which version they were testing? I saw gameplay of the game on launch day that was awful, though it was cherrypicked to show the game's flaws. I've played it on my Pro, with the latest patch, it appears to be running better then MHW did on my regular PS4, as well as TLG on the same.
Another day, another thing to blow out of proportion. It's definitely not great but for the average person it's hardly noticeable.
But in this time and age we focus so much on the technical stuff, we forgot to actually play and enjoy games for what they are. Honestly, if I had a dollar for every time gamers complained about something, I'd be rich by now. Usually, when I don't like something, I simply move on. So much rage over... video games.
@naruball I agree with you that these 'outrages' are getting ridiculous. But I dont agree that it should just be accepted when a game performs miserably on a technical level.
Sub 30fps is for a lot of people basically unplayable because it induces headaches and there is also a very noticable disconnect between input (controller) and output (television). As a professional game developer you know this and the only reason the game doesnt perform well is because a decision has been made not to put time and effort (and money) into optimizing the game.
I also think Pushsquare does a very respectable job of reporting on these issues but not letting the comment section turn into a rampage.
Having witnessed what both of these consoles are capable of in the right hands, this is nothing short of shambolic.
@naruball Come on from 60FPS to a 24 FPS with a new engine that is a joke. Cant even get 30FPS on the PS4 Pro or Xbox X its insane.
The performance on Pro and One X is pretty appalling but nevermind.
@YummyHappyPills I think its a terrible engine myself to there are so many great looking games at a steady 30FPS. For me also a 100 man pop in pop out is bad. Just tone down to 60 characters or what is needed. I rather have a good looking game with less stuff in it. A playable game is needed so i guess we see it the same way work with what you have. Plus its extra painfull that the older games look the same and run 60FPS and its not like openworld add anything here.
Sure this is likely to be rectified with patches, but anything below 30fps needs to be pointed out to people looking to purchase a game..
Some games can get away with it just, but an action orientated game like this... no, and simply consumers should be informed..
To be honest, optimisation this day and age, shouldnt be a problem... but its the "get it out there and patch it later" mentality that doesnt help
