The PlayStation 4 has just received firmware update 5.05 - and it's a simple system performance upgrade. Business as usual.
The update appears to be mandatory, but at only a few hundred megabytes, it shouldn't take you long to download and install.
This is not to be confused with the upcoming firmware update 5.50, which will be much more substantial. You can sign up to take part in the beta test now.

Won't let me download...I get error code saying 'can't be found on server'...seems like I am not the only one looking at the Sony PS forums...
I signed up for beta. Sony don't let me down.
I'd like to be able to rip Cds and play them on the PS4. I still buy the latest Cds of my favourite musicians as a 320kbps mp3 is lossy and I like getting the lyrics liner notes and the custom printed CDs themselves plus my OCD engenders me to lining all my CDs up juuuust so.(over 100 Depeche Mode CD and CDS' lined in chronological order makes me feel warm and fuzzy just so). But I doubt CD playback is going to happen, even though enabling CD media play in a PS4 update would be a tiny update in the scheme of things. I guess BD audio only disc work in the PS4, yes? Lets hope that medium doesn't crash like SACD, Dolby, DTS and various other formats (apart from Cds funnily enough) went the way of the megaphonus. I liked ripping and storing music on the PS3, Whatever happens I am looking forward to new features on the PS4's XMB.
@BlaBlaBla That's odd, I downloaded it without a problem.
@BlaBlaBla Mine went in fine. I'm with SIEE. Perhaps the problem you are having is localised to SCEA servers?
mine went fine as for @procion BD audio disks have never taken off in the way hoped
After turning off then on again, it finally downloaded...phew.
I forgot to mention vinyl still being a strong medium (though never for a ps4 of course) despite the dearths of the other media's potencies I earlier mentioned which all died out (SACD, Dolby, DTS and it seems BD sound too). I am now seeing alot of young people buying vinyl which is heartening, and the sound is so sublime.
it's probably just ground work for the 5.50 update
@BlaBlaBla that sounds odd, never heard that one before perhaps the server was overloaded with traffic
I seriously hope that Sony out in a big performance update because the console right now is sluggish as hell. I even found that the actually console seems to suck a lot of bandwidth when downloading on my network that I've had to QoS through my router to slow it slightly down as it stops my PS3 which is now my streaming console from signing in. And it sometimes cripples my PC but I've seen some sluggishness when scrolling over the XMB2 I wish it was like PS3 sleek and simple plus I do hope they add a clear all option to upload/downloading notifications
My console runs so stable now. Put an apple on top of it and it did not fall.
@iARDAs is it stable enough to house a horse yet though?
Ok gonna get it later today when I finally try the Dissidia beta.
@Nakatomi_Uk You might want to consider doing a reset and re-install of the system software. Mine's still as smooth as the day I got it.
Oh god, my unit is so f**king stable
@Paranoimia Really would that help ?? I did upgrade my 500gb to 1TB and I did do a quick format a few months ago
@Nakatomi_Uk I can't say with 100% certainty that it will help, but if the UI is lagging that badly, it's the only option I can think of. Or maybe try a safe mode restart and rebuild the database first.
The UI hasn't got any slower with the firmware updates, so it would seem most likely to be a minor issue with your system. A database rebuild, or at worst a re-install of the firmware, are the only things you can try to resolve it.
The Stablenator strikes again!
Maybe the PS4 is slow because it's so stable that it keeps the hard drive from moving.
@procion you get hearts for the awesomeness that is over 100 Depeche Mode CDs arranged just so.
