Top Up Your Stamina, Sharpness, and Health
Your stamina, weapon sharpness, and health will regularly drop as you kill monsters and traverse the world, so you should get in the habit of keeping all of this topped up at all times just in case.
You'll always have a whetstone on you, so just use it each time you kill a monster to keep that topped up. If you constantly replenish your supply of healing items and food, you shouldn't have any trouble keeping your stamina and health at max either.
If not, there are items out in the field that can do this for you for free. Vigorwasps and the plant vitality can heal you, for example. Learn what each does, and exploit them.
Visit the Smith Each Time You Kill a Monster
Every time you kill a new monster, you should pay a visit to the smith – particularly when you've killed a large monster. Chances are, you've unlocked a new armour set or weapon upgrade.
You can then make a note of all of the materials you need to craft it, if you decide you want it.
Armour Skills Are Important
When selecting armour, you should pay way more attention to the skills than to the defense rating. That's because you can upgrade each armour's defense to the highest rating, but you can't change the skills attached.
So take a good look at the skills on each individual piece of armour, and select those that will benefit your build the most.
Upgrade Your Gear
Once you've crafted a new set of armour or a weapon, make sure to see if you can upgrade it.
Weapons typically have a variety of different paths you can go down, which provide a bunch of different properties from different ammo and coatings you can apply, increased damage, and elemental damage.
You can only boost a set of armour's defense rating, but it's well worth doing. This can make an enormous difference in your ability to take a hit from the massive monsters.
Don't Neglect Your Palico
Don't just focus on your own gear, craft your Palico some stuff, too! Sure, your little pet doesn't do an awful lot of damage, but every little helps.
More importantly, your Palico helps keep you alive or do more damage to a monster thanks to various Palico equipment. So keeping your Palico alive and well is pretty essential.
The good news is that Palico equipment costs a heck of a lot less to craft, so you often only need to kill a large monster once to get everything you need to outfit it.
Or Its Equipment
Palico also have a unique piece of equipment that can give you a helping hand in the middle of a fight. They can summon Vigorwasps to heal you, or flashflies to blind your enemies – amongst many more.
Just as you do for your own equipment, use the best your Palico has to offer in each different scenario.
Try and level up each piece of equipment as well, as you don't know when you're going to need it later.
Save Custom Loadouts
You can craft different gear sets for various different situations, and then create a custom loadout to quickly switch to it while you're in town.
Definitely do this. While you can beat most monsters with any weapon and armour combination (and a lot of skill), there are absolutely loadouts that are best for different circumstances. Use and exploit them.
Fill Out Your Monster Field Guide
To make the crafting process much easier, you'll want to fill out your monster field guide. This helps you find out which monster drops which item, and the part that you may have to break to get it.
Just kill each monster a few times and you'll completely fill it out. That might be easier said than done, but it's worth it in the long run.
Once filled out, its often a lot easier to find that monster again when you need to kill them. Open your map while you're out in the field, and you can track them. Your scoutflies will then lead you directly to them.
Break Large Monster Parts
While fighting large monsters, focus on breaking each part of them individually during a battle. This will make the battle much easier, as it often reduces their mobility and ability to use a powerful attack.
In most cases, these parts are also the monster's vulnerable spots, so you'll actually deal more damage as well.
How do you know which parts to aim for? Well, once you've filled out your monster field guide, you can refer to it to see which parts of the monster you can break.
Before that, just keep hitting the parts where your damage numbers turn orange. In most cases, this will indicate a part that can be broken.
Another benefit to breaking parts is that it often leads to the best rewards. A piece of material might drop off the monster, you can carve the tail, and you might carve a better material once its dead. You'll even get more rewards at the end of the battle. It's well worth doing so.

This is a great guide for monhun beginner like me, thanks
What an extensive guide! Congrats man, really well done
This is a great guide. It’s particularly good for this game which seems to have a high barrier to entry. I wouldn’t mind if P Square did more of these for the more complex games. I’m not getting MHW day 1 due to backlog, but I’ll definitely come back to this guide if I get it down the road.
I'd also add that you should try to capture monsters instead of killing them. This way you'll get more monster parts.
Once a monster is weakened enough use a trap and while it's immobilised throw some tranquilliser bombs (if I remember the name correctly) at it.
@KappaBeta Thanks! That's definitely good feedback. I'm of half a mind to create a separate capturing guide because it's a feature I struggled most with
@Th3solution We will be! I just joined as guides editor a couple of weeks ago, so you'll see a BUNCH more guides from us.
@FoxyGlen Great! Good to see the Push Square towers growing!
Thank you for the guide! This is my first game in the series, and even though I played the beta extensively, there's so much that I don't know about the game yet.
Great guide. Weirdly, this is making me more inclined to get the game than all the reviews I've read.
I’m pretty sure there are only some aspects of character creation that can be changed after starting the game, so this decision does matter. Don’t make a your character look like Shrek unless you wanna keep it that way!
@Snorky Yep, I was just about to say the same thing. You can only re-edit hair colour and style, makeup, underwear style and colour, and I believe eyebrow style (and colour, of course, to go with the hair).
Helpful guide, though. Even though Capcom have made this more accessible, it's still got the weight of a very long series of games behind it so there's still a lot for new players to take in.
Thanks for your guide and effort, it's my first time playing a Monster Hunter game, the guide will be really helpful.
@FoxyGlen exactly what I needed. Thanks for putting this together Glen!
@Johnnycide Anytime
Fantastic guide many thanks
