PSX 2017: The Last of Us 2 Is 50-60% Complete, Gameplay at E3 2018

The panel was really fun, even without many informations about the game. Looks like that The Last of Us 2 will come in 2019 and there is nothing wrong about that, take your time and deliver another masterpiece.

Who needs a gameplay demo with Naughty Dog? Not hating, but their games are all basically the same in the gameplay department.

@KirbyTheVampire you don't think there will be any innovation or new mechanics in the gameplay department?

They should keep this a secret, it will be really cool to see the demo on e3 sony stage without knowing its tlou 2 from the start, like god of war reveal on e3 2016

@get2sammyb I suppose, but it's mainly only different because ammo isn't abundant, the environments are more closed-in, and the enemies are much stronger than the ones in Uncharted, which discourages a run and gun playstyle. The core gameplay of running through environments for certain stretches of time, gameplay "mechanics" (if you can even call them that) to extend the game's length like pushing Dumpsters around and moving planks, sneaking around, and shooting is all very similar between the games. The only real difference is that Joel and Ellie aren't as good at climbing as Nate, and you can't just shoot all the infected into oblivion because you only have a few bullets at a time and clickers can insta-kill you if they get close. Yes, the games do play differently, but I'm just saying that their games are similar enough to not get me excited for a gameplay trailer. I generally know what to expect from Naughty Dog games, especially since they barely change the formula in their established franchises at all aside from polishing everything and adding one or two new little mechanics, like Nate being able to swing on a few things with his grappling hook.

Granted, there is probably more room for innovation in TLoU than there is in Uncharted, due to a stealth system having more room for creativity than shooting. Still, I don't expect anything major to change at all. Why would it? They haven't majorly changed their established franchises in years.

@deepspace5d Not anything significant, no, if the Uncharted series is anything to go by. Those games have hardly changed since the first one, outside of a couple new mechanics and making everything more polished.

@KirbyTheVampire Jak & Daxter plays exactly like Uncharted.
And The Last of Us is basically a Crash Bandicoot clone 😉

@KirbyTheVampire I know, I’m just teasing you. You know you’re gonna hear it from all the ND fans (like myself) if you throw shade at their greatness.
But seriously, their modern stuff, post-Uncharted 1, does play similarly as far as movement and traversal and basic gunplay. The stealth added in UC 4 and the slightly more open world in 4 and LL are gradual deviations, as well as the vehicle usage. And of course TLOU didn’t have the huge actiony set pieces of its big brother. But the evolution of ND over the last 6 games has been in their narrative, story telling, and character development, imo.
That said, I expect TLOU2 to stretch their gameplay formula even more. Just a hunch. I think the world will be more open and I think there might be multiple protagonists it appears. Looks to be bow and arrow weapons. Probably a lot of stealth gameplay like in the first one.
Just speculation of course. I have no idea.

@Th3solution I'm a fan of Naughty Dog as well, for sure, I'm just saying that I'm not exactly surprised by what I see when I play a new game of theirs, lol. I absolutely enjoy where they've gone with the whole story-telling thing, though. I vastly prefer a serious story to the happy-go-lucky nature of the first few Uncharted games.

I hope TLoU2 does change things up a decent amount, though. Their current gameplay formula is fine, but it's very average. I wouldn't touch a Naughty Dog game if they didn't have fantastic stories.

@dark_knightmare2 Well for one thing, I already addressed the TLoU thing in my other post. For another, when I say they've hardly changed, I mean purely in how the games as a whole play and operate. There aren't many new mechanics that have changed the series much. It has more certainly become more polished, and a few new gameplay elements have been added, like larger environments and the grappling hook, plus the stealth meter, but that's about it. None of the Uncharted games are all that different from one another, outside of refining what is already there.

@KirbyTheVampire I'm sorry but Uc 4 has some of the most fun and tight gunplay out there especially with how many options you have in a firefight. I don't see too many games out there that let me start out taking goons down in stealth getting seen so I jump and swing from a grapple while shooting people then jumping off and hitting a guy with a melee attack which causes his gun to fly up in the air which I proceed to catch then turning around spraying the next few guys with said gun then jumping and sliding down a mud hill lighting goons up with an assault rifle reaching the end and melee jumping into the last enemy standing and knocking him out all in one continuous sequence without a stutter or hitch. Their gameplay is top notch and people who still try to act like their gameplay is Uc 1 level average still are just laughable

@dark_knightmare2 If you'll read my posts, you'll see that I said multiple times that the games have gotten more refined. There's a big difference between refining a formula and changing it.

Take a look at the original DOOM and the 2016 DOOM, for example. It's the same general gameplay, but it has gotten much more refined and polished.

@YummyHappyPills Meh, I think my point is pretty logically sound, so I don't really care if people agree. I did exaggerate a little when I said that they're basically the same, but I think most people could agree that recent Naughty Dog games don't really change that much.

That is kinda true about the release dates, yeah.

Absolutely. You can use an AK-47 or a mounted gun to take a horde of clickers at once. Or both games have pistols, that means that the gameplays are identical. Why bother to show the gameplay of any sequel, amirite? It's not like The Last of Us is critically acclaimed or that many fans are waiting for the game.
Anyway, you guys probably played on easy/casual mode the game and that's absolutely fine, but please, stop spread misinformation saying that Uncharted and The Last of Us are identical.

About the release date, so what? Of course that the game will come in 2019, we are not less excited about that at all. It's really normal to announce a game soon, to build the advertisement and hype for the game. Rockstar and CD Projekt are doing the same, but evil Sony is evil, right?
Maybe you guys have the release date for games like Metroid and Bayonetta 3? Please, share with us. xD

They're a lot further ahead than I thought.
That makes this a firm 2019 release imo. Also kind of sad that this will start winding down this generation. I think all cards have been dealt and the PS4 is going to go out with TLOU just like PS3 did.
Don't know where to place Death Stranding. Could be a PS5 launch game & I've lost hope of a Bloodborne 2 on PS4- even though it could be a massive sales success with such a large install base.

Again , spoil things are showing up but not from fans. I can`t get it. why they want every one knows " WE will show gameplay at E3" so what then?! that was a kind of Surprise but now look at that.
it`s not finishing here , I`m sure we will see many other story spoil in trailers . like what they did with Uncharted 4 or now GOW.
OHH!!!! even the teaser in PGW had a spoil !!! we can play with someone else!! wait what?! the biggest Surprise in TLOU was what happened to Joel and then game made us to play with ELi . and yeah!!! that was a kind of Surprise! but now they spoiled it just for showing how game works.
sorry but i`m really scared . I don`t want to lose my joy in Experience of the game. what happened in uncharted 4 was a Tragedy and I`m see that`s growing in TLOU 2 .

Do we have an estimated lauch date ? For exemple, christmas 2018 ?

@KirbyTheVampire I get what you're saying that it's mostly refinement of gameplay with a few additions to the gameplay with how you traverse, but what would they need to add for you to want to see gameplay?

For a third person shooter ND's games are far above average in the gameplay department in my opinion, unless you start comparing it to something like MGS V

@KirbyTheVampire I've seen people say that 2D Mario and DK are the same, but ask anyone who has played the games extensively and they'll tell you they're completely different. I guess in a general sense they are similar, but they are too many differences you shouldn't ignore.

Have a feeling Sony’s E3 will be amazing in 2018! Have a feeling we’ll see gameplay trailers/demos of Ghost of Tsushima & Death Stranding along with The Last of Us Part 2. Also expecting to see From’s next project revealed & hopefully see real footage of Medievil Remaster! Now I have to contain my hype for half a year.

@PS_Nation For one thing, I played it on Normal mode, like I do with most games. For another, I didn't say the games are identical. I conceded that the games are different, just not enough for me to care about seeing the gameplay, especially since Naughty Dog didn't really change the Uncharted series much at all, and I personally don't see that changing with TLoU. If you're excited to see it, that's fine by me. I don't know why so many people here are offended by a pretty benign post. But please don't just ignore everything past my first post, and don't put words in my mouth.

@Mart1ndo_ My big complaint is the filler between the action sequences, like walking around and moving objects and finding pallets so that Ellie can get across water. The action is fine, like I said, if a little samey at this point. I just think they could do SOMETHING that's not boring busywork used only to artificially extend the length of their games with those parts of their games. They do the same thing in Uncharted.

And yes, Mario has been pretty stale for the last few entries IMO, which is why Odyssey is the first Mario game I've played since Galaxy 2.

@Octane I didn't ignore them. I noted some of them in my later posts. I wasn't planning on writing a list of all the differences that I did agree were there, but apparently I've upset half of Push Square by not caring about seeing a gameplay trailer for TLoU2 because chances are it won't have changed that much, so I ended up having to do it.

@adf86 I actually don't really care. People here are clearly way more passionate about this subject than I am, judging by the responses, lol. That might sound like I'm one of those people who stirs up the hornets nest and then acts all innocent, but I'm not trying to do that. I genuinely don't know why people got so triggered. Some were fine, but others were clearly pretty upset.

I agree with you on the pallets crossing the water being tedious. ☺️.
It was the first game I was ever actually interested in the story and the connection between the character's. I never seen anything like that in a video game before.

@KirbyTheVampire I agree with you that the formula for ND games is pretty much a given at this point. And if I'm being honest much of what Sony's first party studios are putting out seem to be third person action games here lately, so a gameplay trailer, for me, would highlight everything that make this different from those other games, even though I already kind of know what to expect having played the first game.
