The port masters over at Bluepoint Games have revealed that Shadow of the Colossus will feature two different modes on PlayStation 4 Pro: Performance mode and Cinematic mode.
Cinematic mode, as you can probably imagine, bumps the game's resolution up -- supporting 4K -- while keeping the frame rate capped at 30 frames per second. Performance mode, meanwhile, aims to double the frame rate, cranking it up all the way to 60 frames per second. Action game connoisseurs will no doubt be giving the latter a shot.
It's nice to have options, isn't it? What mode do you think you'll be using? Find some fur to climb in the comments section below.

Wish more games were able to do this.
The normal PS4 version runs at 60fps, though, right? If not, that's pretty bad.
I mean, a remaster of a PS2 game should be able to run at a decent framerate on the base PS4.
@Matroska No, as far as I'm aware the base version runs at 30. It's also not a remaster — it's remake like Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
But yeah, I'll be honest, I'm getting a bit sick of 30fps.
60fps please. Thank you.
The 60fps mode is 'exclusive' to the Pro enhancements. Yet again though, the '4k' option isn't 4k at all but 1440p - not even using checkerboarding to achieve a 4k presentation. It also seems that HDTV owners won't get supersampling as it states a 4k UHD TV is required for the 'Cinematic' mode - assuming those people would prefer that over 60fps.
@ShogunRok Well at least it's a remake then. I thought it was a remaster, but an in-depth remaster like these guys did with UC1-3.
@Matroska 60 fps on base ps4? you are a funny guy lol
@BAMozzy honestly the pro should support native 1440p output...which is the resolution that most "4K" games seem to run at on the pro.
Let's hope this isn't mislabeling a frame rate mode as a 60fps mode a la FFXV. Everyone got crazy expectations that it would be a 60fps mode when SE always called but frame rate mode. Big difference between unlocked frame rate and a locked 60fps for some gamers
@manu0 That would be pointless for the majority as their are no 1440p TV's and therefore either the Pro or TV would still need to upscale the image to fit the screen. Its only beneficial for those that may want to connect to a 1440p monitor but then games like H:ZD would then be super-sampled down to 1440p or, as the Pro seems reluctant to offer Super Sampling, only offer 1080p and then upscale to 1440p.
Running the games on a 1440p monitor would improve the overall look though as that would eliminate the blur/softness that upscaling creates.
It does annoy me as Sony's own guidelines that leaked seemed to indicate that 1800p would be the 'minimum' and that they would assist developers to deliver this level using methods like Checkerboard rendering. 1800p CB is actually rendering less pixels per frame than 1440p but CB techniques do require some processing to try and ensure the right pixels from the previous frame are pulled forward to fill in the gaps. I don't know the 'cost' for using CB rendering but you would think that the saving by rendering fewer pixels would offset that. A game like H:ZD offers 4k CB (double the pixel render of 1080p) and the Pro has ~2.3x more powerful GPU. Presumably, that 0.3 extra is being used to do the CB assuming that it takes double the GPU to double the pixel render. I know its not exactly like that but considering 1800p CB is effectively just rendering 2x 900p - 2.88m Pixels whilst 1080p is 2.07m pixels and 1440p is 3.69m pixels. The pixel count for 1800p CB is midway between 1080p and 1440p but delivers a sharper and better fit for 4k TV's.
If most games offered this option I would most likely buy a pro tomorrow.
@manu0 NiOh lets you chose. Played NiOh at 720p/60fps on base PS4. It can be done. Options are nice.
As for SoTC, I can't wait to finally play this. Not long now!
@BAMozzy i have a 1440p monitor, that's why i want it
This remake graphics is amazing, it looks like original ps4 AAA
games rather than ps2 game. Can't wait to compare 4k 30 fps vs 1080p 60 fps on my pro
And the soundtrack is amazing too.
That's nice but what about the 95% of PS4 owners with the regular system? Please give me some peace of mind that we'll have a smooth performance as well.
@Matroska it's a remake, as in everything is remade for the new hardware.
@Matroska The PS3 port was a remaster. This version of SOTC is a remake. Much like Resident Evil or Metroid: Samus Returns.
I refuse to buy a pro for any of these minor enhancements. Not buying PSVR either. At least give me the option to lower the resolution on the base model and up the frame rate.
Saving my money for PS5.
I'm def pumped for this and even more excited about the collectors edition which I'm def getting
Bluepoint Games has an impressive portfolio of titles. These guys do remasters, but god-damn, do they do them right each and every time. Kudos guys.
Couldn't find any retailers that have the Special Edition up for pre-order, yet. Hope its not a GameStop exclusive.
@manu0 Sorry, delayed response, but there are games that run at 60fps on the base PS4, and 60fps games all the way back on PS1. It just seems odd that they're taking a game from PS2 to PS4 so when it comes to setting the graphical bar, they could've stopped at the point where it ran at 60 rather than keeping on going until it could only do 30.
