With Call of Duty: WWII out today on PlayStation 4, we were wondering: what are your thoughts on Call of Duty as a whole? Activision's franchise is still a commercial juggernaut, doing numbers that most games can only dream of, but we remember a time when the series was so big and so impactful that every annual release sent shockwaves through the gaming sphere. The launch of a new Call of Duty title was a huge event -- you could barely escape the inevitable wave of hype.
These days, that doesn't really seem to be the case. A new Call of Duty releases, it gets decent-to-great review scores, it sells well, people love the reworked multiplayer, people hate the reworked multiplayer, and then it's a case of "same time next year?" Again, the franchise is still massive in terms of popularity, but we think it's fair to say that for many, it's lost its once prominent edge.
But how do you feel about good old CoD in 2017? Are you still a huge fan of the series, or have you long since lost interest? Vote in our polls, and then take aim in the comments section below.

The poor man's Splatoon.
@KirbyTheVampire Nice troll post there.
Honestly I would take CoD over Splatoon any day. Especially cause my son and I can play splitscreen on CoD unlike Splatoon.
@Tasuki It's a joke, lol. I commented it on the De Blob article as a serious post, and then @Octane did the same thing on the Wolfenstein article, so blame him for starting this, not me.
@Tasuki Hey, it was just a joke
And no, it wasn't me who started it!
Anyway OT; I don't really care about COD, not my type of game.
I was caught on the hype train briefly and purchased Modern Warfare 2 a few years back. I enjoyed the campaign & definitely enjoyed the co-op.
But I've not bought any other CoD games. Played split screen on a friend's copy of later releases which have been varying degrees of fun depending on the entry. But the online which I believe is the main draw isn't something I found to be entertaining. Give me Timesplitters instead any day.
A game I would never guy as a gamer, but a game I would always produce if I were activision.
This game right now is a mess! Multiplayer functions don't work for me and for other players around the world...I've searched through the forums about info but all I see is people complaining! There isn't one piece of info or help from activision or sledgehammer or wtv about the error code 5!
Funny thing this error happened in BETA and they didn't fix it LOL
F*** OFF
@Tasuki You just made his point as COD is poor man's Splatoon as Nintendo owners can buy 2 switches and play together while poor people on a single COD will beg for split screen. So his point is valid.
Like Infinite Warfare, I'll pick it up when it's £20. No point buying CoD on launch imo
@Octane I would have never thought of posting that about games that are totally unlike Splatoon if you hadn't done it first though, so you basically did, lol.
@iARDAs Haha, that's kinda true actually, lol.
Didn't play Cod Since CoD 2 in 2005 or 6 i don't remember.
Gee, I wonder how this one is going to turn out?/s
Last years Infinite Warfare with CoD4 (Legacy Edition) was the first CoD I ever bought. I enjoyed both games, but not enough to go out and buy another game so soon.
CoD just like Assasin's Creed is mainstream and therefore the internet gaming community has to hate on it.
Call of Duty - especially the last few entries - are usually good, but for years, they really neglected the single player campaigns. The Modern Warfare trilogy was okay, Black Ops was 1 and 2 were alright, but in my opinion, from Call of Duty 2 until Advanced Warfare, the single player campaigns were just okay or "pretty good." Advanced Warfare, however, raised the bar; it, Black Ops III, and Infinite Warfare were fantastic.
I like the cod campaigns. Usually running normal first time then trying out the hardest mode on the second run.
But they are all forgettable post mw2 and other than the slick mechanics they are very last gen.
I liked early Black Ops 3 a lot. Great coop game with solid MP. Otherwise, I do not like them... I particularly don't like the old fashion shooters. Titanfall 2 was somewhat the peak of MP shooters for me... but the lack of COOP knocks it down a bit for me.
@iARDAs Why would I buy two systems for one house hold? I don't buy 2 PS4s or Xbox Ones to have to play couch co-op FPS.
@AFCC I don't know I never had any problems like that during the beta. No anyone else I know that played the beta.
I use to play bo,bo2 like crazy. Then i started aw and somewhere in there i just got extremely bored of cod. I went on hiatus and after a couple years or so i started to get the itch to play again and caved and bought bo3 after about a week it hit me again! Just bored of the cod formula. Even with the new movement they just all feel the same. I eventually got BF1 and it was a breath of fresh air! And then got titanfall2 which absolutely blew me away. Tf2 is the best shooter ive ever played hands down.
I personally think cod just needs to stop.
Middle Pinky to CoD...
Pre ordered it from GAME UK in April. Still waiting for it to show up even though everyone else I know had it today. Will never be using GAME again. Went out and bought it and when my copy arrives, I will be taking it back for a refund.
@Tasuki I see it on so many forum posts! Seems like hundreds of people are getting the error and still no fix! It sucks
I tried bo3 for a few months, what’s fun about playing a game with people quick scoping, spawn trapping, camping, and flying around in the air like a dandelion? Multiplayer shooters just aren’t for me, it’s a nice idea in theory but the players ruin it and the devs encourage them to.
I've never really been one for multiplayer gaming but Call Of Duty was the only series I was really into which had it.There used to be a group of us at work that would buy it every year but sadly the group split up and I hated Black Ops 1 and 2 so I didant bother with it again until Infinite Warfare which I loved and now a new group has been set up at work I'm looking forward to trying the latest...after the ridiculous 9 gig update that is..
I have owned evey single cod game and I've not even looked at this one. The series is in a total mess compared to what it was. It won't get any better either as people keep buying it still
@KirbyTheVampire Poor man's Splatoon? That's fascinating; I always thought it to be the poor man's Knack 2.
I'd rather magically age 50 years and reverse mortgage my house than buy another Call of Duty game.
Never that fussed by Call of Duty. I like my gaming experiences as escapism. If i wanted to be in a war I would have joined the army and crossed my fingers for some action. Although I'd probably be dead by now though as I would run in guns blazing like a lunatic like I do when I play games.
Used to be obsessed with it, then I got out of it and decided I wouldn't be interested unless they made another historical game.
And while the series certainly has many faults with it, a lot of the hate towards is absolutely moronic and it shows a lot of the people who write stupid comments have barely any experience with the series, will never like the COD whatever it does, and are just following the crowd.
I don't dislike it, and I always used to buy both it and Medal of Honor - when they were predominantly single-player games and had lengthy campaigns.
I haven't bought a CoD game now since the original Modern Warfare on PS3, and BF4 was the last I bought from that series. Personally, I'm still sick of WW1/WW2 settings because I played so many of those old CoD and MoH games, so I didn't bother with BF1 and won't be getting CoD WWII either.
I want more current-day settings from either if I'm going to buy another, preferably a Bad Company 3 with a big campaign. Until then, I'll get my FPS jollies from titles which focus on campaign and/or co-op, which currently seems to be the domain of Ubisoft with games like Far Cry 5, The Division, and GR Wildlands.
I really enjoyed the single-player campaign of CoD 4 (Modern Warfare) and World at War, but now i'm really tired of the series. The last one that i played was Black Ops 2 and the campaign was really lame, imo. Looks like that i will not buy Call of Duty anytime soon.
i've played most of them since CoD - though i haven't really enjoyed the multiplayer at all since black ops. the original modern warfare is for me still the best campaign and multiplayer. by the time MW3 came around, it had become nonsensical rubbish.. of the next gen ones i've played, ghosts was terrible, but advanced warfare's campaign was actually pretty good in terms of gameplay improvements imo. i think part of the problem is that the engine, whilst its had improvements made to it over the years, still feels like it's stuck in roots, at a core level, it's felt fundamentally the same over the years. i played a lot of MW multiplayer, but by the time bad company had upped the ante for console multiplayer imo, then KZ2's superb 32-player warzone mode came out, CoD's multiplayer just felt like a real throwback. i think i ranked to about level 40-odd in black ops, but any of the others since MW2, i don't think i've got to more than rank 10, if i bothered at all that is. i don't dislike the series, but i don't have a compulsion to buy every year either.
My COD phase was MW2 to Advanced Warfare. I was someone that wanted them to bring back a "boots on the ground" COD, but I've lost interest now. MW2 was the best. Getting a nuke just felt so damn good.
These poll results show, yet again, how our community is just a teensy, tiny subset of the market.
You wouldn’t think CoD was one of the biggest brands in gaming looking at these results, would you?
Also, Infinite Warfare was hugely underrated as a single player game. That campaign rocked.
Good ones imho
CoD2
World at War (inc best version of Zombies)
CoD4
Blops 1
All the others are lame imitations of each other, the futuristic ones being the worst.
However might give new one a go, once it's been patched a bit and on sale.
However, anyone know if quickscoping is still a thing in this one? If so then pass (again).
@get2sammyb The internet in general is not that representative of the market. COD is a game that sells to millions of people who only buy a couple of games a year and don't interact with the gaming world outside of that much at all.
I usually want to play the singleplayer campaigns but haven't bought a copy since BO3. Supposedly it has a splitscreen zombie campaign and that's probably the biggest draw for me right now.
I got it cause its the only one thats interested me since black ops 1. Enjoying the story and multiplayer. But ive made a badass Optimus Prime emblem and it wont let me upload it. Took me ages, im not leaving til it uploads >
Played COD 3 on 360 andi really enjoyed it a lot its what made me buy MW and I enjoyed that so i got MW2. But with all 3 games for it's multiplayer I would get to level 30 and I'd get bored and get rid of the game. I've never touched a COD game since because it doesn't look anything different.
@Wesker That's for sure. I know tons of people IRL who are pretty casual but really like COD.
COD WW2 is definitely getting back on form after the last three space COD's, this is much better. And apparently Tryarch's COD will also be boots on the ground set in 2018, a modern day COD. Haven't tried the campaign just yet been playing Multiplayer & Zombies, it just feels a lot better more grounded over the last lot. Zombies is a lot darker over Tryarch's Zombies, i also like the different types of Zombies that keep you on your feet. They've definitely have brought the horror back to Zombies, the story is also very interesting also it almost feels believable as Hilter did do some strange stuff.
The last CoD I enjoyed was BO2. Just stale to me now. Would rather spend my time and money on other games.
@Constable_What That's not really fair though; all games are a poor man's Knack 2
@hadlee73 There is a mute button you know.
@KirbyTheVampire Yeah it's the same like GTA. Every week people on the internet question why it's in the top ten, but IRL I've met many people, who really don't consider gaming a hobby of there's, who play GTA, Call of Duty or Fifa.
Not a Fan of Activision.
As for War stuff Hidden and Dangerous was the dogs ballocks.
I like MW2 and MW3 and the first BO i never understood why people praised the ugly as hell BO2 i thought my PS3 was broken the first time i played it....
Not really interested in going back in time, BF1 only held it's appeal for a couple months for me. For now I'm happy with Destiny 2 PVP, the little that I do play it.
@IceClimbers Knack 2 bay-bee!!! What a mastapeece!
To be honest, I've actually always loved the futuristic CoDs (Campaigns at least. I'm a single player kind of guy). Black Ops II was a pretty fresh take on the CoD setting when it came out. In Black Ops III, I love the weird, surreal storyline, and the DNI abilities are really fun. Infinite Warfare might have one of my favorite campaigns with all of its side missions and space combat (and I do love space!). The first Black Ops will always be my favorite though. It had such a different campaign from previous games, and I loved the story.
WWII games have been done to death though. I'm not really interested in another one. I have a feeling lots of shooters are gonna start going back to older conflicts now. They did modern and futuristic for a while, but it seems like old is the new "new" now. Battlefield 1 started it, and CoD is continuing it.
@Constable_What Here comes da moneeeeeeey!
I used to like the old COD games up until modern warfare but I prefer older style FPS titles without recharging health on this 2 gun bull***t. So for me Doom was the best shooter I've played in a very long time and I'll be picking up Wolfenstein 2 soon
dont normaly play multiplayer as massive backlog of games but found it good
@Tasuki Take a chill pill dude, was just said in jest. Not much of a sense of humour today?
@get2sammyb Agreed! Infinite Warfare's campaign was amazing.
@carlos82 Same here, I preferred when we could carry tons of guns in FPSs. Definitely planning on getting Doom soon, but I'll probably get it on Switch.
I liked the first 2 games in the franchise and enjoyed MW (it had strong singleplayer), but afterward I lost interest in the series as the WWII was out in their main campaign. For this one I'm really tempted because is back to the roots of the series and since my old PC won't be able to run it at all, I'll have to choose my PS4 as companion, although I haven't played FPS with controller since first Medal of Honor game on the PS1 back in '99...
I might have to jump to this. The Battlefield 1 servers are dead.
@Giygas_95 I platinumed Doom on PS4 and I've still preordered it for Switch 😃
@carlos82 Ah, that's the question...Get it on PS4 for performance or Switch for portability?
@Giygas_95 well there's no doubt it'll be a much better experience at home on your PS4 and £30 cheaper but I can't resist being able to play Doom anytime and anywhere. It's just a shame we haven't seen docked footage yet
@carlos82 First world problems I tell ya. I might wait till the switch version drops in price. I feel like a scaled down port of a year old game shouldn't be full priced, but there ya go.
@get2sammyb
On the subject of CoD's popularity... This is something I've never fully understood, myself. I don't actually know anyone who plays CoD. I've never met a CoD fan. No community I've been part of has spoke highly of CoD... I've often wondered where this popularity it has comes from and WHO is playing it? Judging by the poll, not that many people seem to care about it. I assume they have such a small, dedicated hardcore fanbase, that they can leech off that and sustain themselves.
I'm not a CoD hater, it's just something I've noticed over the years.
@get2sammyb The campaing was a good one the rest was terrible.
@Giygas_95 You liked the campaing from BO3? I loved the first the second game was to ugly on the PS3 sold in two days. And the BO3 campaing was just horrible and boring for me i loved Infinite Warfare though.
@Flaming_Kaiser Yes, in fact I'd rate the BO games 1>3>2. One thing you have to understand about me is that I love weird, surreal stuff, and I also often like that one weird game in a franchise that's completely different from every other game in its franchise. BO3 is that game for me. The story is really cool when you figure out the twist (though I admit the game should have explained the twist better). BO3 is just so much weirder and darker than every other CoD game, I love it. The DNI abilities are also super fun to me.
And yes, Infinite Warfare's campaign is amazing. I love it too.
Well, I love it. Been gaming since 83, and loved Commando back in the day on C64, coded by Chris Butler. If only I’d known then what kind of shooter I would play 30 ish years later ... unfathomable.
