In the wake of the Star Wars Battlefront 2 fiasco, loot boxes are a hot button topic in the industry right now. And veteran God of War director Cory Barlog has revealed in GIF form how he feels about the fallout.
So, as a form of catharsis for all of you, here’s Kratos punching a treasure chest in the face:
It’s safe to assume that the new God of War game will not have any loot boxes, then, although frighteningly PlayStation’s new president has indicated that he’d like to explore monetising first-party titles a little more. Let’s hope that the backlash to Battlefront has all publishers spooked, and forces them to reconsider their plans.

Publishers should be spooked. That just shows how much power is in the hands of the consumer. Vote with your wallet and they'll suddenly find enlightenment.
@OGGamer I dunno, we'll see. There's still a good chance BF2 will sell very well.
''(for now, at least)''
This part actually worried me...
@Octane I think he means he'll be coming back to kick the loot box's ass some more.
@KratosMD I can't get into every nuance in the decision process of buying or not buying a game. Without even telling the publisher the reason it wouldn't be hard to figure out. "Our sequel is selling like crap. What did we do different?"
"Um the major change we made was add loot boxes".
I agree that reaching out helps. Twitter makes that easy. Getting significantly less or no money at all WILL force them to look at ALL changes they've made. Your money speaks even louder than you do to these companies. Is they sold a million copies their first week. Another million their second week. Lootboxes and all. Do you think they'll give a rats rear what you say?
@OGGamer If three million people would buy swbf2, but not a single one bought a loot box, what message do the consumers send?
@Octane Yeah, I read that as they haven't forced him into implementing them into God of war....yet.
That might come back to bite him, given John Kodera's supposed fondness for microtransactions.
Anyways Kratos punching stuff is always fun.
kratos the man the icon.the legend.God of war is PlayStation best franchise ever.is that x box chest.haha.kratos you are legendary word up son
Cant wait for the last of us 2. Getting to a tense scene like the Paris demo. But wait, whats this. A loot box falling from the sky with a sombrero hat and marracas to kit out Ellie with to light up the darkness. LEAVE THEM OUT PLAYSTATION. WE DONT WANT THEM!
@KratosMD FFS did you see the internet blow up with the lower sales i think they can think what happens.
I truly believe the biggest win of this whole SWBF2 saga is against other developers.... EA is the bEAst... it will always come back
BUT other publishers will have to deal with an emboldened masses that are ready to take back gaming from MTX... publishers are going to get trashed
I hope John Kondera gets the message too.
The fiasco has been going on for years. How come the internet chose now to get all antsy about it? Why not for Overwatch, FIFA, NBA2K or any of the countless games in the last decade or so to tack on microtransactions and loot crates?
@KratosMD But you're describing a logical and healthy way for a business to work. It's not always this. For example, did EA bother to understand why Andromeda sucked? Did they realize the problem was that they rushed the clap out the game? Or did they simply say "Well, it sold like a$$, so let's put the franchise on indefinite hiatus until people start begging for a reboot"?
Did they care about why Dead Space 3 'failed'? Did they realize why Dead Space 3 disappointed? Or did they refuse to bother once they saw sales didn't meet expectations and put the franchise on a bus?
@JasonBeckerFan I don't know about mtx on fifa or nba2k, but on overwatch mtx is just cosmetic, it doesn't give you advantage on multiplayer while on bf2, the lootbox system is clearly giving the player who pay advantage on multiplayer.
@JasonBeckerFan Ive hated microtransactions since day 1 if that helps you.
The main reason is people are getting fed up of spending extra dough in all of there games. Its fine (in a customers head) to make a one off tiny payment for something they enjoy (see overwatch/rocket league) as if you dont have any spare cash they can still enjoy the game. Its another thing entirely when you cant enjoy the game unless you pay the money for in game purchases.
Thats my take on it anyway.
And that's a rule!
I can safely say Loot Boxes are not going anywhere, and they will be in every game in time because of the amount of money they make.
Microsanctions will never go away if people keep buying them. Let's not forget that there are actually people online who say they don't want microsanctions but buy them anyways. Even if it's a small percentage, developers or publishers will see it as a profitable opportunity.
@banacheck in most games? Maybe. All games? Never.
Hope God of war 4 lives upto the hype.Take a look at https://theanxiousgamer.blog for similar articles.
