As expected, Gran Turismo Sport has sped to the simulation sales crown, tripling rival racer Forza Motorsport 7’s launch tally. The anticipated title – which naturally topped the UK charts – enjoyed stronger week one sales than the original entry in the series, and also outperformed late PlayStation 3 arrival Gran Turismo 6. It did, however, fall significantly short of Gran Turismo 5’s debut.
It’s worth noting that none of this data takes into account digital sales, which are increasingly on the rise across all platforms. The title’s also disappointed somewhat critically, registering a respectable if unremarkable 76 on Metacritic at the time of typing. We awarded the game a good 7/10 here at Push Square, praising its unique approach to multiplayer but questioning its car and track roster. For a franchise that’s historically rated in the 90s, the scores will likely disappoint.
Nevertheless, it comfortably outperformed South Park: The Fractured But Whole, which netted first week sales figures on par with its predecessor. WWE 2K18 debuted in fourth, down in boxed sales compared to last year’s edition but up in revenue thanks to the addition of pricey alternative SKUs. And elsewhere, ELEX entered in 25th position, while Rogue Trooper Redux charted in 37th place.

Crash just won't go away
@PhenomenalOne Yeah, it's done unbelievably well.
Hey, I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but how come no one talks about the DLC? Reviewers seem to give somewhat of a pass to multiplayer heavy games (like Overwatch) for having relatively little content at launch, but providing free stuff promised down the line. And from what I've heard (please correct me if I'm wrong), there will be several tracks and several hundred cars released for free, with no noticeable microtransactions from what I've seen, just by the end of this year. Considering pretty much everyone praises the handling, the graphics, the strong netcode, the cool matchmaking system, and really everything else a game like this needs, but knocks it down for a perceived lack of content (which at this point is totally valid), that seems like something that would be worth mentioning. I dunno. Just something that's been bugging me lately. Sorry for rambling.
@sajoey Oh, absolutely — speaking from my own perspective I definitely see it as a very strong base for which content can be added to.
From a critical standpoint, it's hard to really talk about things we don't know about, though. Polyphony hasn't released a road map, and we don't know how future updates will be monetised.
I'm certainly looking forward to plenty of new content for the game, though, and I think it could really blossom like DriveClub if the support is as good.
@sajoey It's cos it doesn't fit with the "it doesn't have SP bro" narrative that some want to throw down people's throats. I'm just glad it hasn't effected sales.
@sajoey I was thinking the same thing. It's easy to take things for granted. You'll only miss them when they're gone.
Glad GT Sport did well. Only the second online only game I've bought & I'm really enjoying it thus far.
I'm certainly enjoying GT Sport and I haven't raced online once. Last night I was struggling on a particular challenge but after tweaking my car's downforce and gear ratio I was going for gold like Henry Kelly.
Next week is probably going to be one of the most stacked weeks of this year so far.. the results will be interesting
@ApostateMage Going For Gold - Showing ya age there
not that i needed more evidence for UK's horrible gaming taste, but here it is.
@dellyrascal Like a fine wine. I'm not quite as old as you yet but I'm getting there.
I hope pd support and expand the game with free and paid (but fair priced) dlc like driveclub.
@ApostateMage touchee sir... touchee!
GTA down to 8th...could it finally be on the way out?
@Rob_230 No chance.
@get2sammyb 😂 I would love to know how much money they have made from it. Must be ridiculous.
@manu0 what do the German charts look like?
well GT5 went on to sell well over 10m worldwide, with GT6 selling just over 1/3 that, so i think sony would be well pleased if it can outsell GT6 over lifetime. GT games usually have longer legs than some games. racing games are not really my thing, but i did see the game's scapes mode in action.. it looks fantastic if you want to create some fine looking car porn.
@kyleforrester87 don't know and don't care. probably equally horrible though.
I'm glad GT sport is doing well, will need it to in order to get some new content in return.
@manu0 word up son
@manu0 But you obviously cared enough to comment on British taste though.
Ok I will be the one saying it: impressed to see The Evil Within 2 at 6th. Thought it would drop off after its debut week.
@sinalefa it only really had 1 day to make an impression on last weeks chart so if it is still around next week I will be happy.
the german charts are not that different: http://www.gfk-entertainment.com/news/horror-haelt-einzug-in-die-games-charts.html (in german. )
PS4:
1. FIFA 18
2. Shadow of War (Standard Edition)
3. The Evil Within 2
4. Shadow of War (Gold Edition)
5. WWE 2K18
Power to Sony and GTS playing the demo and wasn’t that impressed at all. I’m not even impressed with forza 7 either I’m either getting old to play racing games or it just feel like is the same thing just a different title and change few thing here and there.
@get2sammyb also, PD is known for promising things they eventually don't make true.
Well there are only 10 Xbox owners in the UK now
I know there are a lot of people (certainly in my friends list) who are waiting for the Xbox One X to get Forza 7 and there are a lot more PS4 and Pro owners in the UK so its not 'that' surprising a result to me. Whether GTS would have sold as well if the Pro was due out in November and with some retailers offering GTS as a 'bundle' game, we will never know.
Point I am making though is that week 1 sales may not be the 'best' indicator with these 2 racing rivals. For all we know, GTS could drop dramatically in sales as those who wanted it bought it during the first week where as Forza 7 grows in sales - especially once the X is released. Also as there are more PS4 owners, it will be interesting to see how the numbers of both stack up as a percentage. Will more GTS reach more PS4 owners as a percentage than Forza 7? time will tell.
I know, that factors 'like the imminent' release of the X may not be a 'deciding' factor of the long term sales. For all we know, GTS could get a lot of free content over the next few years that help keep sales of the game going but its a good start for a basically MP only game...
I am really enjoying GT Sport. The online aspect is spot on; something that always bothered me about Driveclub was the constant bumper car action and it was always a crap shoot who you got paired with. So far I have taken a few wins and many close close races indicating to me that the matching system is working well.
I also like the qualifying aspect and being placed respectively to your qualifying time. Getting out in front from the start makes a huge difference and incentive to pole. I like the reward system for Fast Laps and everythzing else the game rewards. Having a ton of fun, not a huge online gamer but this makes it as fair as possible.
I have only been dropped from server once during a race. I do not like the fact that if the server dumps you there is no local save option, very irritating at least!
@kyleforrester87
Oh that makes sense then. Hoping it actually stays in the top 10 next time.
