After a pretty lengthy hiatus, Assassin’s Creed Origins plots a return for Ubisoft’s flagship open world franchise. But can it reclaim the property’s past glories? A slew of reviews are in ahead of the Egyptian adventure’s release this week; our copy was clearly intercepted by carrier pigeon (or eagle, whatever) so our verdict is still forthcoming.

Last night I moved in on the final boss fight. Then, I moved past the final boss fight and into the most bizarre endgame I can imagine in a big budget affair. And it was bizarre because of the scale Ubisoft was willing to reach for, even now, the places it was willing to take me, even at the end of an adventure, and its sheer unwillingness to stop making improbably lavish new stuff. As dawn rose, I wondered whether this would ever end, and I realised that I didn't really want it to. Assassin's Creed remains a wonderfully foolhardy game in terms of its ambition and its generosity, even if it it is no longer quite as distinct as it once was.
IGN - 9/10
Assassin’s Creed Origins is a deep-dive into a truly stunning realization of ancient Egypt, with a rich series of cultures, genuine characters, and more mission variety than any other game in the series. The combat is challenging and thoughtful, and while the loot system doesn’t match up to games like Destiny 2, there are enough different weapon types and enough enemy variety to keep you swapping between weapons, catered to the situation. The RPG elements encourage challenges of their own, and even despite a handful of bugs, I desperately wanted to keep playing.
Polygon - 8.5/10
In essence, Assassin’s Creed Origins is much the same game as the original Assassin’s Creed, which came out a decade ago. It’s a formula that people like to play, and it’s certainly been honed and improved over the years. Origins is, then, undoubtedly the best iteration of this formula yet. But I yearn for a fresh approach and new ideas, something that astounds the senses as much as the wondrous world this game inhabits.
GameSpot - 7/10
While Assassin's Creed Origins reaches great heights in this new setting, it routinely runs into issues that bog down the overall experience. Technical issues make for an inconsistent experience and its new gameplay pillars wobble under the weight of its systems. But despite this, the world of Origins remains fresh and exciting to explore, which is a testament to the remarkable setting and compelling story. Assassin's Creed has undergone many changes in its long and storied history, and Origins feels like the first step in the start of a new journey. It has its fair share of problems, but the vision for its future is one worth pursuing.

I continue to be intrigued by this game, but not enough to buy it day 1. The reviews so far look to be about what I expected though. Awaiting Push Square’s review to really help solidify how soon I decide to get it, if at all.
@Cpt_Price Hard to say. We've been in contact with Ubisoft over the past two weeks but unfortunately they haven't provided us with review code yet.
I've just purchased a copy of the game, so will have it tomorrow at the very least. I would estimate next week for a review.
i might, still need to get syndicate first though, i was a bit burned out on the series by the time unity came along, i needed a break
Syndicate was pretty good. Looking forward to giving Origins a go.
The last AC game I played was Black Flag so I almost feel ready for a new one. Almost. I've not felt like an actual assassin since AC2 though so that's always the deciding factor for me with these games now. I don't want to be a freedom fighter, I want Hitman set in different time periods, with much better combat, climbing, etc. This new one looks promising but if it does nail that hunter vs prey vibe then I'll get it at some point.
@JoeBlogs Undecided at this point.
Assassin's Creed is deader than disco to me.
@johncalmc But disco's not dead.
@get2sammyb And I actually love disco, so it's not a very apt phrase. But Assassin's Creed can get in the sea.
I watched a few long play videos and it looked okay. Same old with loot. With the setting being quite open, it also looked a little barren. Much preferred the look of the more intricate, smaller city settings. Maybe there are other locations that rectify this.
@johncalmc Disco is also one of the few time periods they haven't visited yet. I could see how that would work.
Assassin's Creed _Disco_ver
It's murder on the dancefloor 🎵
Im only picking games up after the honest and better written pushsquare reviews. Nice to have the rundowns though.
I can wait. I've got a bit of open world fatigue right now, especially since I'm trying to get through Shadow of War and Horizon at the same time.
Still not interested.
@Kidfried Okay, that's probably the only thing that could get me to buy another one of these games at this point.
@get2sammyb Polygon said this in their review
"it is necessary for me to mention that this review is based on the Xbox One X version of Assassin’s Creed Origins. Ubisoft insisted on only allowing me to play this one version as a condition of playing the game, pre-release. And so I’m in the awkward position of critiquing a piece of software made for a console that will not exist as a consumer product for another few weeks.
Ubisoft wants us to see the world it has created in the best possible light. But if you are not planning on buying an Xbox One X, you should read this review with the necessary caveats. I have not played this game on any console that you (or I) actually own."
I saw some footage of the game running on PS4 Pro from Jim Sterling's channel and I think it looks great
@AzlanWake13 Most of the other reviews are based on the PS4 version, so I don't think that was the issue.
@JoeBlogs Sammy needs to time to watch Taylor Swift's new video a million times. Egypt can wait.
GamesRadar have given it 5 stars (5/5)
As for the 'video' reviews, all have said footage from XB1X so I don't know if other reviews have looked at PS4/Pro version.
@get2sammyb Owhh I thought it was mandatory because I saw a lot of them are reviewing in it on XBX
I was relieved to know that
@BAMozzy I saw some footage of it running on the Pro on some channels and I think it looked great but I don't know much if there is a very noticeable difference with the XBX version but Digital Foundry will no doubt cover this extensively in their video
I'll wait for pushsquare review, the setting is great though, ancient egypt is intriguing.
Over the last 18 months I've almost caught up with the series. Only got Freedom Cry left.
I hope they move the modern story forward a bit. Syndicate gave me hope that we might get back to it's origins...
According to the reviews I read, Origins is really something different from the usual AC in a positive way, but not so different from any good open world game, except for the setting.
This goes in my "Let's wait for the Goty" list.
I've got a couple of games to part-ex in my local Game shop including the recently released and frustrating "Elex" so after work tomorrow I'm packing my virtual bags for Egypt .
@AzlanWake13 Depending on the source (youtube has a lot of compression for example), the display (whether you are watching in 1080p or 4k) and its size (whether you watch on a big TV screen or small window on a small screen) will determine how much of a difference you can see.
Even after watching Horizon:ZD in 4k on my TV's youtube app, the actual game running on my Pro looked superior in every way - it was helped by HDR too of course - something youtube at the time couldn't offer.
Watching the Shadow of War tech breakdown, I certainly didn't think the game looked bad at all and those with 'Pro's' are certainly getting an upgrade over the base PS4. Textures, whilst not the 'best' quality, do benefit from having a higher resolution - again that is seen in H:ZD too. Its not until you see these compared side by side with PC (and soon X) high quality textures that you see how much 'detail' is lost or how 'soft' they really are. The extra draw distances too are not always obvious until you see a side by side and see how different these areas look. Whether that makes a significant difference or not, depends on the person.
Its nothing 'new' for consoles - if you are comparing these to PC's. Even before the Pro/X consoles, some PC's at 1080p offered a higher level of visual presentation that individually may not of equated to a 'lot' of difference but when viewed 'side by side' and analysed, the difference was certainly much more noticeable. The higher shadow quality for example showing more fine detail and accurately defining the object that cast it compared to a blurry, low res and either dithered or pixelated basic shape. Some shadows were missing details - like individual leaves and some not even 'dynamic' (just static so leaves/branches etc don't move even though the tree is swaying in a breeze). The more distant objects are often missing on a console because of draw distance limitations - it may only be a bit of foliage or some extra rocks but that detail is on the high-end visual settings a PC could offer.
At the end of the day, people will still feel that their 1080p console version is still a 1080p image and therefore not significantly worse than a PC's 1080p. A game could release at 900p and have much higher visual settings that offer a more 'complete' image (no lost detail) yet people will fixate on the fact its not '1080p' so must be worse. With the PS4 having a superior GPU to the XB1, we often saw a 900p vs 1080p situation but in the games that did run at 1080p on both, the extra resources of the PS4 were able to improve aspects like shadow quality or draw distances. A classic example of Shadow detail can be found in Rise of the Tomb Raiders Geothermal Valley Hub. On PS4, the shadow of leaves is present but on XB1, you only get the 'branches'. I am sure other aspects like draw distance, ambient occlusion etc are maybe higher too so even if both are 1080p, the difference can still be seen if you want to look for it.
The thing is, most console gamers are used to games looking a certain way. Then a Pro comes along and offers a relatively 'small' boost (I say relatively small because its only a 2.3x GPU boost compared to a 'big' boost that a next gen console might offer). That boost offers a 2x boost to resolution and because you are used to 1080p, 1440p looks fantastic. The same visual settings are still in place so the game doesn't look 'different' but the resolution makes everything look sharper. Its not that different than playing a game like Black Flag on your PS3 then playing it at 1080p on your PS4.
The Pro will certainly offer an upgrade over a base PS4 and those with 4k TV's will certainly notice how much better it looks over the games they played on the base PS4. If you game on a 4k capable PC though and used to seeing the 'best' 4k quality, you will notice the resolution difference, the texture and draw distance difference etc - especially if you use the same display for both. Its also far more obvious than a youtube video with both side by side. Some of the better ways of showing it is when they flick from one to the other and show whats missing on the weaker system as side by side looks often very similar. If you are invested in the PS ecosystem, the Pro will be the better visual experience and be an upgrade over the PS4 so its still going to impress because they are used to what a PS4 offered and the level the Pro offers.
Couldn't care less for the Gamespot review, it's the worst site nowadays...
Anyway, I'm still very much hyped for this
Where is the review round-up for Super Mario? lel 97 on metacritic insane
Saw the first 45 minutes from Youtuber Theradbrad last night: I am not a fan. So much derivative gameplay systems! Horizon tall grass stealth, RDR horseback riding, cavern traversal a la Tomb Raider reboot... It doesn't seem to have any original ideas to it.
Oh, and the whistling to lure braindead enemies towards you is still there. No. Just no.
Good to hear that Origins, Wolfenstein and Mario are all getting great reviews.
@BAMozzy I don't care much about 4K or the inner works of graphics in a game but yeah based on a video of it running on the Pro it looked great enough, I'm sure the XBX will look better than the Pro.
I'm not buying AC:O anyways, gonna be spending my time on the new Mario and Wolfenstein II
The game looks great, imo, but I was expecting better scores judging by the hype and settings. I'm not saying that the scores are bad though.
I still want to play this year, but not right now.
I have it in my grubby paws right now (thanks certain online retailer) and cant wait to get stuck in, Loved Syndicate before, and love the Egyptian era, so good to see ratings are very positive!
I can't wait to play ! Had the game preload yesterday. The torture of staring at the icon but can't play =(
Glad this turned out good. Only other AC I've played was Black Flag and I enjoyed it. Hopefully they learned their lesson and won't try to rush another out next fall
Never liked any of these...
Loving the series even with its flaws. A2 and black flag where great, after patching i liked unity alot also so i pre orderd this a while back and still looking very much forward to playing this. Witcher3 in egypt with a pet eagle..sounds like im gonna have lots of fun!
@JoeBlogs No
waiting for goty edition probs
Bought it, I think I'm one of the few who actually liked AC: Syndicate so I'm looking forward to playing this. Super Mario Odyssey will be getting most of my play time but when I get my offdays early next week I'll hopefully be able to really get started in AC: Origins as well. Reviews seem mostly very positive, which is good to see.
Why isn’t this displaying in 4K on my pro like horizon zero dawn?
@johncalmc Yeah, Assassin's Creed can get in the sea because I loved the boat segments! (Until AC4 came along and made it a chore)
@Totaldude911 😮 but that's the only good one!
@johncalmc It was a great game but I hated ship battles
