So, in case you didn't know, Sony is hosting a PlayStation press conference at Paris Games Week on Monday. And yes, this is going to be a "proper" press conference -- not some little reveal event or anything like that. We doubt that it'll be on the scale of something like E3, but based on what Sony has said over the last couple of months, we assume that it's been putting together a reasonably big show.
But what can we realistically expect from the Japanese giant when it has the PlayStation Experience coming up in December? Did it hold things back from this year's E3 so it could stock up on reveals for the Parisian event? It's tough to say, but we want to hear what you lot think all the same.
If you're interested in hearing our own predictions for Paris Games Week, be sure to give this article a read. Once you've got your own expectations in check, vote in our polls, and then tell us what you hope to see from Sony in the comments section below.

I think they really need a solid show with good amount of surprises with X launching in a week or so with Switch having Mario they srsly need something good nothing amazing but good.
I think Playstation Experience will be their main show going forward. I expect a few smaller announcements at Paris Games Week, but anything major will be at PS Experience. These events are so close to each other, and with everything else at Paris Games Week, PS Experience will be the place where they can really bring the focus on their own stuff.
Bloodborne 👀
@Hapuc While I agree, I think this kind of mentality only applies in enthusiast circles, where a single announcement or interview or review can completely swing mind share momentum on message boards.
In reality, Sony could announce nothing for the rest of the year and still have an excellent holiday. But yes, obviously as fans we want a cool show, so hopefully they have some good stuff lined up.
I don't think anybody is worried about Xbox X at Sony. It will probably sell even less in Japan. I imagine they'll have a God of War demo thing and something about Shenmue and call it a day.
Good to see expectations being held in check.
I thought E3 was solid. Nothing new outside of SotC remaster, but with what’s in the pipeline, there are worse things than rehashing all the upcoming exclusives...like repeating the word exclusive for timed or launch titles that will be going to other consoles. I think this strategy will let them spread more across PGW and PSX.
I think one solid AAA reveal, some cool indies and VR with a big Pro focus and price drop.
Half of the voters think this conference is going to be as big as E3? I better avoid the comments section next week, people are setting themselves up for a big hangover.
Will tune in for sure. Seems like Sony's got the goods lined up.
Knack 3, baby! (^-^)
To be honest, where can you see 7 new games coming from? Obviously Sucker-Punch and maybe FromSoftware but that accounts for 2 - the rest VR? I wouldn't be surprised.
I know they could show games like Dreams and Wild - games that seem to have dropped off the map and no doubt Destiny 2 will reveal its first Expansion too. I still think the bulk of the show will be made up of things we knew about and/or expect - like a Price cut for example.
I think the way Sony are trying to hype it up, especially with the X around the corner and trying to take some attention, it will either seem 'desperate' or 'disappointing'.
Thinking it'll be solid, a nice bit of new stuff to tide us over till Dec...which is going to be wonderful, methinks.
@get2sammyb
Well yes this show's are for Us who follow the news who are into gaming because at the end of the day the hype for any game begins with us Hardcore when we hype a game up Casual players pick up on it.
@BAMozzy I mean, they didn't necessarily say they'd be first-party games. I'm sure there'll be a lot of indie/third-party stuff, but that doesn't mean they won't be interesting.
I keep my expectations reasonable. Leads to a happier life.
Not expecting much but happy to be proven wrong.
@BAMozzy What do you expect them to do though, they can't just sit back and let MS have a free hit, they need to be seen to be competitive.
@adf86 Sony are 'competitive'. Their Pro is £100/$100 cheaper, they already have the 'best' HD gaming console on the market, they have a 'great' back catalogue of Exclusives and a lot of games on the Horizon too. They also have a 'commanding' lead in terms of sales so how are they not being competitive? The arrival of the X isn't suddenly going to dominate in sales - even if it is the 'best' console on the Market. Its MS that has to be competitive to show why that price difference is justified, why people should invest in their ecosystem and maybe miss out on Sony's great library of upcoming games, why they should spend that £100+ more. Even without announcing any 'new' projects, there is this common thought that MS has 'no games' - at least 'no games that people want to play or compete with the likes of Spider-Man, Days Gone, God of War, Last of Us 2 etc.
@get2sammyb I never said they wouldn't be interesting - at least to certain demographics. The 1-2m people with PSVR may well find any new VR games interesting - maybe a 1m or so others become more interested in PSVR after this too. There is always people who take an interest in the Indie games too. I know there are people who 'shut off' at the indies but as we saw from E3 2017, people were critical at the lack of coverage and some of those that watched MS's E3 were looking forward to some of those Indies when the come to PS4 (The Last Night for example).
I don't know how 'excited' people are in general over new 3rd Party Multi-platform titles - Some seem hit or miss, some are 'discounted' because they are multi-platform games. Again looking at MS's E3, they showed Anthem, AC: Origins and Metro yet MS's was 'poor' because they lacked 'Exclusives'. If Sony show footage Destiny, CoD, SW:BF2, Monster Hunter, Ace Combat, RDR2 etc or any 'new' AAA multi-platform game for the first time, I feel that the community, whilst excited at seeing these, will also dismiss them to a degree when it comes to looking at 'Sony' - its almost as if only Exclusives matter in briefings and only 'new' games. I know most people will be looking forward to the games we know are coming but if Sony show another God of War, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Detroit etc - even new footage, it will fall a bit 'flat'. I believe that was what 'hurt' the reception to Sony's E3 this year - the lack of any big 'new' exclusive reveals. I know you were excited by SotC remake but with that being the only 'new' exclusive reveal (not inc VR which only a small minority of people own) despite new game-play footage from most of E32016's 'new' reveals. E32016's is going to last longer in the memory than this years because of all the new exclusive reveals. I do think that if Sony were to reveal 7 new games and only 1 was a new AAA 'exclusive', with the rest made up of Indie, VR and multi-platform games, it will still end up disappointing many - especially with the 'hype' Sony are building.
Price drops again only affect a certain percentage of their audience. I bet most people tuning in will have a PS4 so a price drop on the Slim doesn't affect them (unless their OG PS4 is on its way out) and those with a Pro aren't affected by a Price drop - that includes me. I couldn't care less if Sony were selling the Pro for £200 now, i have one so not looking to buy another. A price drop on PSVR would be welcome but I doubt they would drop it to a price I am willing to jump in at - unless some of those 'new' reveals end up being VR 'must have' games - and games that I can actually play - I am very susceptible to motion sickness and have mobility issues too.
Point is, E32017 had a great line-up but fell flat - maybe a bit deja vu. So even with great games, great exclusives etc, and especially with the Hype Sony are trying to generate, it could still 'disappoint'. That doesn't mean that the games etc aren't interesting or desirable (lets be honest, how many people are looking forward to Spider-Man, Days Gone, Detroit, God of War etc and all these were at E32017) - its just that (it seems) people are only 'excited' by big AAA new (never before shown or revealed) exclusives and anything else (VR, Indies, Multi-platform etc) don't 'count' so much
@BAMozzy My point was more Sony had to do what they can to stop any kind of momentum that MS may gain so it makes their product look better.
@adf86 And my point was, they don't really need to. The X, like the Pro, is not likely to be the 'bigger' seller at the moment with more opting to go for the HD option. The price of the XB1X has been 'criticised' too - saying its too expensive for a 'mid-season' upgrade - not a 'next-gen' system. Then there is the games, or more the 'Exclusives' (or lack of in MS's case) and perception that the Pro is essentially the same for less money and a better line-up. Its also lacking VR at the moment too - if that matters.
I have no doubt that the X will do well in the next month or two - just because its new and people have been waiting to buy but when that initial burst settles down, like the Pro, the base model will be the bigger seller. The longer the generation goes on, the more likely the more powerful units will become the 'primary' seller but Sony could throw a spanner in MS's cogs by releasing a much more powerful PS5. If it arrives with a decent CPU as expected, not only will it offer 'more' consistent 4k with maybe higher visual settings (thanks to a beefier GPU), it could offer more 60fps (or higher with HDMI 2.1 coming) games making it the 'best' for multi-platform games, along with an incredible library of Exclusives and therefore hit sales of 'last gen' X's long before MS get anywhere near Sony's PS4 sales. If the XB1 sales reach the same rate as PS4's sales in its first 4yrs and outsells them 2:1, it will still take MS another 4yrs just to catch up.
I think the onus is much more on MS to convince people that there ecosystem and the X are worth buying into, worth spending more on. As people have said, the same games are playable on a high end PC at better frame rates so why not invest in a decent PC instead? Why buy an X when the Pro has better Exclusives and is a lot cheaper. Just because MS are releasing the 'most powerful' console onto the market, doesn't mean that Sony need to react as they have many advantages - like Price, Library etc without doing anything now. Chances are that those buying the X in Nov would still buy it regardless of what Sony do at Paris and the onus is more on MS to convince people its worth spending the extra £100 on when all its offering is the 'same' games that a Pro has. Why spend that £100 more when the cheaper Pro will play all those games plus a lot more exclusives too - that's before Paris. If Sony were concerned, they would have done something at E3 before the console went on Pre-order, not a week before it launches...
Of course I am buying an X but I am not getting rid of my Pro.
My expectations are normal, I guess. Not sure if the huge announcements like Sucker Punch and The Last of Us 2 will be there, PSX or even on the next E3.
If you are expecting something like Bloodborne 2, you will be disappointed.
@Kidfried In fairness, it barely needs any new announcements to be better than E3 in that area.
