Like a lot of Sony’s library at the moment, The Last of Us: Part II is looking dark. Like, really dark. In this new Paris Games Week 2017 trailer, we see a woman being hung, and her stomach being caressed by a rather sharp knife. The insinuation seems to be that the lady is pregnant, but scenes quickly devolve into an ambush. And then the clickers arrive.
There’s no sign of protagonists Joel or Ellie as far as we can tell, so this is more of a mood piece than anything. It’s certainly piqued our interest, though.

Some gameplay would've been nice
Grim, horrible, awful, not what anyone was expecting. Anyway enough about Donald Trump, that trailer was pretty strange.
I didn't love this as a trailer, to be honest. Like, I'm willing to give ND the benefit of the doubt and assume that in context this will all make sense. But as a trailer it just seemed crazy violent without telling me much about the game.
With that said: very very very excited for the game itself. Should be a cracker!
The graphics were insane!
Mayhaps its in the past and that is Ellies mum hmmm
@StArHaMa The game's still early in development with a possible 2019 release, first gameplay is PSX at the earliest.
I can see people getting hysterical over this trailer but The Last of Us is a very brutal world and it should be depicted as such. If anything the industry should be allowed to tackle such heavy topics as violence against women or domestic abuse in the case of Detroit without potential witch-hunts all the time.
Honestly, I thoight the trailer was a bit too dark. Neverthless, it still got me more interested, especially for its characters.
Very dark and violent. Hope that scene doesn't represent how the entire game is gonna be like tone wise.
@adf86 "If anything the industry should be allowed to tackle such heavy topics as violence against women or domestic abuse in the case of Detroit."
Ive just watched a woman being hung and a kid being murdered by her dad in those trailers. Its not really tackling violence against women or domestic abuse, if its actually fully acted out in front of you. Im a little uncomfotable watching that tbh. Gamings entering this weird dark territory and the technology is at a point to showcase it in life like graphics, hopefully the designers can be trusted to do the right thing.
@themcnoisy That's understandable mate, but that is the kind of reaction the devs want you to have, in case of Detroit it should motivate you to protect the girl. And TLOU it's too make you hate (the theme of the game) the people committing such attacks. I would say maybe the trailer should have slighty edited out the most brutal bits and left it in the final game but it is what is.
Good trailer, makes me hope Ellie isnt the main character but rather shows up later.
@k_andersen I tend to agree. Me and @get2sammyb were just discussing it and we came to the conclusion that it's Naughty Dog essentially saying "hey, this game isn't out for a while yet, here's some stuff to keep you talking and guessing".
Seems like a logical approach!
Certainly looked Dark but it also seemed to be nothing more than a 'cut-scene' at most. I wasn't expecting any news on this anyway. It was on my wanted list after it was revealed at last years PSX and this trailer hasn't affected that at all.
I can't get too excited yet as it could still be years away. We could see some game-play at E32018 and 19 before this releases...
Looks brilliant as ever and dark too but i cannot wait to see actual gameplay.
@adf86 @themcnoisy I agree that it needs to be handled with care, but we've explored so little of what games can be, maybe we need stuff like this or we'll never know what the medium's capable of.
I love the Flinstones, but I expect television to challenge me from time to time, so I wouldn't watch the Flinstones forever. Bad analogy but you get my point.
This trailer really shows me that this shouldn't be a game at all. The cutscenes themselves could really be a standalone movie.
Honestly, I'm not really that excited for this game. I thought the first game was interesting, but too dark for my tastes.
Yes, this is dark and violent but this not real life. People really should stop and mixing the two. It's a game and should be treated as such. No need to compare things in games with real life events, no matter how realistic is looks.
I'm a dad of 4 wonderful kids and play my mature games when kids are in bed. I absolutely adore dark and violent games but I live a typical life without criminal activities.
I want more developers to push the boundaries with these topics. It's still up to the parents to make sure kids don't play these games. And people that don't like these games aren't forced to buy them.
As for the trailer, I was hooked to my 55' screen. It was bloody awesome to see how it all played out. Props for ND for making something that drew me right in. It was the only trailer that accomplished it. Aside from the Detroit trailer, that one had me as well but on a different level with that kid involved. I really hoped the AI was able to communicate with other AI and call in help ^^. Both trailers were good, but ND's was truly remarkable.
Other trailers were gorgeous and each had a different interesting setting but all lacked the kind of immersion to put you on the edge of your seat.
Cool. I like it , is that Eli's mother?! I'm sure she is...
@get2sammyb It usually comes down to the "games should be fun argument" which I always feel is the wrong word. Compelling is more appropriate, TLOU isn't a fun game in the same way Schindler's List isn't a fun movie but that's ok. Gaming is a multibillion industry and it will continue to grow if games are out there to suit everybody, games need to be limitless in it's reach.
Once again, Naughty Dog's animations are top notch. That trailer was a fantastic spectacle.
People are complaining about the content of the trailer? The first The Last of Us is really dark too and this new trailer is amazing, really curious about the plot.
Trailer doesn't bother me (Nothing super grim happens) but I'm still not too sure if interested. I didn't really enjoy The Last of Us as much as I hoped I would.
Time for gameplay and time for Joel!
It's looking way darker than the original, pretty cool
I wasn't sure exactly what to make of this teaser. It was just kind of horrible. Maybe that was the point?
Whatever the case, Part 2 is going to be one hell of a ride.
masterpiece is brewing at ND!
😨
What did I just see?
Pointlessly brutal and horrifying. I disliked the original and found it depressing and boring, but I would never have considered it to be exploitative or gross. Can't say the same for this, unfortunately.
Grim, dark, and violent. I understand it may fit the context of the game but this type of thing gets kind of old. Real life is dark grim and violent enough. I play my games to escape reality. I don't mind campy violence like in Bayonetta and in fighting games. This not so much.
That sure was a graphic trailer O_O.
That girl was RIPPED! I hope we get to be her!!!
This game is going to be AWESOME! Trailer just showing how cruel humans are in this game and why it's okay to kill them.
There's lotsa dark content all over these days, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, etc.
Tonight I watched a crippled woman I care about get beheaded in a newly released video game on PS4. It just sets me up to kill all of the bad enemies without mercy. Hint: it isn't Mario Odyssey.
Off topic, but is it 'hung' as a opposed to 'hanged' in the UK? Or is it because she Didn't die from the hanging? English is so confusing. I used to get chewed out for using 'hung' in grade school; it'd be cool to know if it is acceptable somewhere. Especially in the UK were you folks speak proper English! If so, take that Ms. Coolidge you old crone!
Anyway, can't wait to see some gameplay, and very much enjoyed this trailer! I was bouncing on my boy's d---no wait no crap nevermind.
I was hoping that The Last of Us Part II would see Ellie and Joel in a more lighthearted situation - maybe opening a shop together and getting into hilarious mishaps and whatnot. But no. Just more screaming and terror.
@Constable_What it is indeed "hanged". A small oversight but nobody wanted to be that guy so brave move!
Trailer was ok, artistically phenomenal, but nowhere near deserving of the hyperbole it's generating from people. It was a bit dark, but that's ok!
@johncalmc Laughter Track DLC.
"Like a lot of Sony’s library at the moment, The Last of Us: Part II is looking dark. Like, really dark"
Which is exactly why we need Sly 5!
@BowTiesAreCool I would pay legit money for that. All games should have it. $5 to make audience laughter pop up at inappropriate moments.
@JoeBlogs @BowTiesAreCool Well I guess Ms. Coolidge got one last laugh from beyond the grave. I hope they have rulers in Hell... sniffle
