Eurogamer reports that selecting the difficulty setting at the start of South Park: The Fractured But Whole changes the colour of your custom character's skin. Yes, you read that right, and you can see it for yourself in the video that we've embedded above.
The game's difficulty slider ranges from 'easy' to 'very difficult', and the harder it gets, the darker your skin tone becomes. "Don't worry, this doesn't affect combat," South Park character Cartman can be heard saying. "Just every other aspect of your whole life."

Amazing!
*makes joke that would likely get him banned
Uh oh. I smell a firestorm coming on.
is this supposed to be ironic or something? couldn't be bothered to watch through the whole video.."white privilege" From South Park now? right..
Reminder to keep the comments section respectable, please. Don't want no daftness in here.
Meanwhile Destiny is charging extra for its own shaders
Brilliant. Love it already
Cheers for that! Any more jokes you'd like to spoil?
Very good. Never change, South Park.
Its getting kind of old should i be ashamed for being white?
Easy it is then!
@special_donky it's called sarcasm you whelk
@Flaming_Kaiser @SwitchGlitch YOU PC BRUH? YEAH I'M PC. BEEN PC SINCE 2011 BRAH
Seriously though this is pretty funny. I'm all for it.
That's tasty social commentary
@CountFunkula78 We have to worry about spoiling jokes now? This news is all over the place, didn't even cross my mind.
Brilliant, this made me chuckle.
This is so so funny. Top marks.
@THRILLHOU Ok bruh
Great comments in here so far. Glad you all get it. Ive read comments on another site and it entered face palm territory. Someone even mentioned they didnt want their character to be black when they play on hard. How could you be so stupid as to think or write that?
Im glad the Southpark writers come up with these points. The humour never misses with those tacco flavoured kisses.
Good. I've stopped watching South Park some time ago, as I felt they where just focusing on one joke (fishsticks? Aspenger?) and just recycycling it over and over and over.. This is actually quite brilliant. Some good social commentary is where shows like South Park and Family Guy can really shine sometimes.
@ShogunRok
It would have been much funnier to see it as part of playing the game instead of reading about it here, and now that I know, well it's just not going to have the same impact.
If you've played the first game, something very funny happens when you go to Canada. There is also a very funny class option (not Mage, Thief or Fighter). If I mentioned either of these jokes, they'd be less funny when you see them in game, no?
Considering the game isn't even out yet, there's no chance to have seen this already, and the fact that it may be on other sites is a total cop-out, especially since it means that instead of finding something from playing through the game yourself, you seem to have just seen it on Eurogamer and then regurgitated it here.
I don't mean this to be personal as I really enjoy your writing, and this site as a whole, but I am a little disappointed (why also include it in the headline?), as it's not really even 'news' as such.
Anyway, rant over, I'm sure I'll get over it and I'm sure there's plenty more great jokes in the game, but please, no more!
His response is pretty savage, I'll give him that.
Is it satire or what? Not sure I get it...
Regardless, not a big fan of social commentary in my games, doesn't matter where it's coming from. Let me just play my games without having to worry about all of that.
@CountFunkula78 I see what you're saying but from my perspective as a writer a popular story is a popular story. Either we don't cover it and that's that or we cover it and it helps the site (as with any popular story).
Feedback noted, though. Maybe we can be more vague with headlines and stuff if people care enough about this sort of thing.
@CountFunkula78 This isn't a joke to some people, it's their reality
Thats great and all except now I have to play a harder game if I want to represent my skin color...
Ubisoft San Francisco... I can't tell if this is humor or hammed social commentary. Also the game info panel says this is 2 player is that right?
@Octane @sonicmeerkat Thank you..@solocapers It doesn't sound particularly funny whatever its supposed to be imo, just like the last season of South Park -I assumed it was an ironic (or "sarcasm" if you like) context, that doesn't make it fundamentally amusing.Name calling isn't an argument Mr intellectual.
@special_donky Comedy is subjective.. Whether you or I find it funny is irrelevant. If you can't accept that then you miss the whole point of South Park.
I laughed.
I have to say, I stopped watching South Park back in, I don't know, 1999 or something, but the first game was an absolute riot.
@special_donky I'm here left to wonder what level of satire this is supposed to be, who are they exactly mocking right here and how do we know? So yeah, I can't tell if it's actually funny or not. I just feel... indifferent towards it.
@Octane I think it's not supposed to be "funny" per se, it's more of a social commentary. If a bunch of people drawn in by poop jokes and strippers, or even just South Park fans, who don't really care about the outside world stop and say "wait...what?" and maybe reflect for a moment, then they've accomplished their goal.
@Lurker I'm more wondering what their intent was than anything else, so I guess I just don't get it
@solocapers So you agree that comedy is subjective then, good.Who are you to say my opinion isn't relevant? I suppose you think your fanboy-ism is more important.
What? I think you need to go have a lie down.
I'm not saying your opinion is irrelevant, however I'm pointing out that you clearly like sp yea.. Im gonna go out on limb to say that?
Well if so its a bit hypocritical to pick and choose the subjects that offend you really as it goes out of its way to target everything as fair game. It's not as if there's not a grain of truth in it anyway, let's be honest.
I'm no fan boy but if you stop and think about a huge amount of the show it's a pretty good social commentary on how things actually are disguised as humour. Sadly, a lot of people are too quick to get their panties in a twist by the initial shock of the joke and totally miss the point.
People who annoy you....... Hard difficulty?
Lol. This is funny
Works on all levels... Black =badass (hard as nails)
People get far too upset about F all.
@Octane Their intent is to incite a reaction. Controversy creates cash. Stereotypes run through South Park. Everything is turned up to the nth degree. Everyone that watches this show knows this (there's even a warning at the start).
Context also matters. This is South Park. They hit on everyone & everything. Nothing is off limits & it's done without any prejudice or malice.
It also wouldn't surprise me if there was some sort of penalty for going super pale or super dark & I'm sure it would be just as controversial as this (I.e real ending is only obtainable by a medium shade character).
This is coming straight from Matt & Trey, not Ubisoft. They are micromanagers. Like others have mentioned it fits the tone of the show & that's all you want from a video game adaption.
In think it's pretty clever. It's just a great play on how in videogames you can often pick your skin colour, while you can't in real life.
And I think the whole point is that it's unclear who is being made fun of, @Octane. South Park always has made a point of making fun of Bin Laden and Bush, Christians and atheists, all at the same time. Shocking everyone is their goal pretty much.
Not anyone will find that as funny all the time, but that's how this kind of comedy works.
Edit: @Fight_Teza_Fight didn't see your replay, obviously. Funny how we make the exact same point and always good to see another fan of SP.
@Octane when you get past the toilet humour used to deliver the message, South Park is and has always been scathing satire and social commentary. Arguably the best satire on tv, imo. This is just continuing that trend. If you really aren't sure the intent here, look no further than Trayvon Martin and all the other high profile stories in the news.
@Kidfried Same here man . Just got through before you.
Great minds think alike & all that.
I wonder whether this'll be censored in the UK like the original one was.
LMAO. That joke is painful, poignant and depressingly funny. Just like life. Not bad.
You can still beat the game even on hard difficulty.
@solocapers You sound a bit confused dude, okay then yeah i like a quite like SP in general (not as much as you apparently) Being a bit of a fanboy doesn't make you a bad person, admit it.I just think SP is bit of a fail here, whats the biggie? My issue is your obnoxious ad hominem's.You are not an arbiter of character, relevence or humor here.
I'm white, for a Brazilian, so my difficult may be around 25%, a little less a little more.
That said I think that it's on par with the show (which I'm not a great fan), so it's funny, caustic and chaotic.
@special_donky You are talking complete jobbies now. Who's making personal attacks? I'm pointing out people sometimes need to grow a bit thicker skin... Point being proven a bit here.
@solocapers No.Who is making personal attacks? Look in the mirror (irrelevant, whelk, need to have a lie down ect) What is "jobbies" about pointing out
your contradiction, apparent over enthusiasm for SP and your need to reduce your argument to ad homenums? Your overly defensive stance speaks volumes.
@special_donky Im not going to reply to you anymore as you are doing your best to get yourself outraged over nothing and making up false accusations of personal attacks.
I made a joke in calling you a "Whelk" in jest, granted. The rest of my comments were not in any way personal attacks. Its called having a discussion, if you construe that as such then I apologise however im feeling you are getting yourself outraged for the sake of it.
Hence me saying - have a lie down... and you talk of me being defensive.
@solocapers Uh huh,did i say i was angry..no.You are the one that just trash talked at me,claiming i am this and that.i asked why, then you transfered your own insecurity back me.The end.
Where is the lie though?
