It doesn't come as much of a surprise, but Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age has topped the latest Japanese software charts. The superb remaster shifted a reasonable 100,764 copies on PlayStation 4, while Gundam Versus enjoyed its second week in the top five.
Meanwhile, sales of Sony's current-gen console actually jumped a little, with the system selling around 36,000 units when taking the Pro into account. We expect those numbers to increase further over the next couple of weeks as the release of Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time grows ever closer.

Final Fantasy XII did okay, but when you consider the PS2 version did like 2.5 million copies in Japan alone... It's... Y'know.
PS4 is having a good year in Japan, however. Will hit a very respectable five million soon, and DQ11 should be big.
@get2sammyb But you have seen how even the big releases no longer get massive numbers. Japan is no longer a big party for consoles. Pokemon, Mario, handhelds sell. Zelda did not even reach the the 600k yet. So i think 100k+ is real decent.
@get2sammyb At this point it's like any home console game that does over 100k in Japan is off to a 'good' start, which just goes to show how much the market has shrunk. Those PS2 numbers are a great example.
Not surprised about New 2DS success. It is without a doubt the best "3DS" revision since the original 2DS.
@get2sammyb FF12 is a remaster, and it isn't even the first re-release the game has had. Japan already got Zodiac Job System version, on which the Zodiac Age is based upon. It's not a bad result for a remaster at all.
I never said it was a bad result, and certainly agree that it's in-line with what we should expect from the Japanese market in 2017, but the decline in that territory is so stark and this is just another example of that.
@ShogunRok @get2sammyb Friday approaches...
@get2sammyb Possibly, but Dragon Quest XI is coming out in just a short while. People really don't have the time for replaying a big RPG like FF12 just before the biggest RPG of the year is hitting in Japan. DQ11 will show the true strength of the Japanese market.
@Mahe I have to agree. When DQ hits, we will truly know the state of the Japanese console market. I think it will be a monster on switch (whenever that version ever comes out) and the 3ds/2ds due to the portability. Hope ps4 version holds its own though. Shame it isnt coming to Vita too!
Are DQ games still banned from being released on a week day in Japan, because employers would see so many staff taking sick days/taking leave?
@Rob_230 Yes, it's obvious that New 2DS and Dragon Quest XI will be a massively successful combo. But the PS4 version should do well too.
As for the ban, who knows, but Dragon Quest XI is still released on a Saturday, so it's definitely a special case.
@Rob_230 Quote:
There is an urban myth that the release of Dragon Quest III caused a law to be passed in Japan banning the sale of Dragon Quest games or video games in general except on certain days such as weekends or national holidays.[8][145][146] When III was released in Japan, over 300 schoolchildren were arrested for truancy while waiting in stores for the game to be released.[147] The rumor claims there was a measurable dip in productivity when a Dragon Quest game was released and although muggings of Dragon Quest titles became so widespread there were hearings in the Japanese Diet, no law was ever passed. However, the Japanese release of every Dragon Quest title continued to be on a Saturday until the release of Dragon Quest X, which was released on Thursday, August 2, 2012. Nevertheless, each new Dragon Quest launch is widely anticipated.
@BLP_Software What's happening Friday like?
@adf86 Splatoon 2 release everywhere. According to some its got some high sales in preorders over in Japan. Hundreds kf thousands
@BLP_Software Splatoon 2 should do pretty well. Will be interesting to see how that does in Japan along with DQ a week later.
@adf86 Splatoon 2 will be an apocalypse there. DQ is harder to call but who knows. Its on 3DS too.
Great numbers for the ps4 and switch. Switch sales will be massive next week.
@kyleforrester87 great response; and absolutely fascinating when you think about it. I cant think of any other title with anything similar in its history - even final fantasy which has traditionally always been huge in japan
@Rob_230 Yeah it's not a franchise I've ever really dabbled in either, I dunno how much I'll enjoy it but I plan on trying the new one. I like a dose of melodrama and straight up weirdness in my JRPGs, wondering if Dragon Quest will be too "simple" for me, if that's the right word lol
@kyleforrester87 dragon quest 8 was sublime on ps2 - but it all seems a little twee now. I am certainly interested to see what the story etc is like and how it gets recieved. From memory, the grind was pretty brutal, so hoping that has been addressed for this one! But I feel the same as you. And atm I am not sure if I have time in my life for this and ni no kuni 2
@Rob_230 Ahh now Ni No Kuni I am hyped for!!
