PlayStation VR PS4 PlayStation 4 Sony 1

Anyone who expected PlayStation VR to sprint out of the stocks had their expectations misaligned: it’s a pricey peripheral in a fledgling space. Sony’s headset is doing just fine, though, outselling its nearest rivals combined and it's just crossed the all-important one million unit milestone as of an announcement made by the organisation today.

The platform holder revealed that 915,000 units had been sold as of February, so momentum has certainly slowed – but the manufacturer is also eager to point out that it’s only just got a steady stream of units back into the retail chain.

Here’s what boss Shawn Layden had to say: “We got to a point around Christmas where you would be hard-pressed to find VR anywhere. So we dialled back some of our promotional activity at that time because we didn’t want to be promoting a platform for people to find out they couldn’t get it. I didn’t want to create more unhappy customers.”

The shortages mean that, like the PS4 Pro, the virtual reality accessory has been selling above expectations – and the platform holder hopes to keep demand high by announcing a second wave of software at E3 2017 next month. “We’ll be talking about a number of other titles at [the show],” Layden explained.
