It feels like we've said this a million times already, but Destiny 2 is going for the 'bigger and better' approach to being a sequel. Bungie was obviously never going to start over from scratch, but to some extent, we were expecting to see a real step forward for the property - and we're not quite sure that's going to be the case. We'll reserve judgement until we've played it for ourselves, of course, but going by the Strike gameplay that we've embedded above, Destiny 2 is looking very, very familiar.
From HUD elements to gameplay structure, you could have told us this was a new Strike coming to Destiny and we'd have probably believed you. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there are definite concerns around the 'net right now that Destiny 2 is essentially going to be a big expansion rather than a full sequel.
What do you think of this footage? Is it way too similar to what we already have in Destiny? Question the light in the comments section below.

I could apply this to so many games, I suppose it's mainly because we have the same 3 guardians as before that creates this familiarity. The reality is the general gameplay loop is pretty spot on and as such it was only the dressing around that which needed changing. I suspect there'll be some surprises along the way which shake things up more than we expect
Whilst there is definitely a sense of familiarity to it, one thing that is a notable difference is the scale of this. The area its set in seems much more vast - not just in the horizontal plane but more verticality too. I understand it probably wouldn't be so 'mechanic' as a Raid as Strikes also need to work with Randoms. You can't co-ordinate a 'mechanic' - especially without line of sight without any communication (Like pressing a switch at exactly the same time). Its almost always going to end in a Boss Fight or defend against waves with multiple engagements, mini boss fights or waves along the route to the final stage.
Some cool feedback from someone who's played it:

@kyleforrester87 I'd put zero stock in anything David Houghton says. I've read a few of his articles, and he specifically goes against the grain for clicks, usually starting arguments for which he has zero facts to back them up. In two weeks he'll have an article up "Why I hate destiny 2 and why you should too"
I mean, the original didn't come out that long ago. There's no reason for the game to look very different if the original was well-received.
So there's defo going to be no more class's! That suck's colour me gutted. Ofc it's going to feel like an expansion if they've just given the same old character's new abilitie's, that is SO lazy.
@RedMageLanakyn agree to a point but reading between the potential BS there are some details about the systems that are interesting if you already know Destiny (unless he's blatantly lying) ie new weapon set ups.
I agree with you completely. It just looks like a touched up version of the first game. and whilst ill take the flak for being a negative broken record, the exact same expansion pass system as the first puts me off too, £90? No thank you. Ill probably wait for the inevitable "complete edition" or whatever they're calling it that will release a year down the line for half the price and twice the content. I don't pre order games anymore anyway.
If it's not broken then don't fix it lol. Of course the HUD looks similar, but name a FPS series that completely different each game lol. The whole idea of strikes can't really be changed that much, however I think there's far more going on. Particularly the environment looks fantastic!
The only thing that could yield favourable reviews would be a substantially larger playing area to remove the 'blocked-off levels' which were decidedly old-gen and lacking the level design excellence of a 15-year old game in Halo still holds the candle.
The core gameplay in Destiny is supreme, but if this is so similar to Destiny Year One, why can't they continue your well-earned characters and weapons?
It just doesn't look very next-gen; where is the power and opulence of Halo from Bungie? The playfulness, story, or vehicles which introduce verticality?
I remember my jaw dropping when playing Halo on my friends' XBox; remember when you could shoot at enemy ships, bring them down, steal them and fly around the level?
Soar those heights again Bungie and make our PS4's sing - unless this entire Destiny thing is partly a f*** y** to their publisher who seemingly have them tied in to ANOTHER 10 year suffocation deal a la Microsoft.
Note: I played 100's of hours of Destiny, hoping Bungie would do for Sony what it did for Microsoft. Alas, it's not there yet - oh, and give us supreme enemy AI, too - another thing a 15-year old machine did better with Halo....
With old-gen abandoned for Destiny 2, there are no excuses now - if the environments, AI and vehicles are improved, then happy days. If.......
