PlayStation as a brand is at that age now where many of us can look back and remember growing up with Sony's original home console. Indeed, nostalgia can be a powerful thing; it can drive us to dig out dusty old machines and briefly transport ourselves back to a different time. HyperPlay RPG is a print magazine crafted by fans of retro releases - specifically those of the role-playing variety. Our pals over at Nintendo Life have covered the publication before, but its latest issue is definitely more in line with our own interests here at Push Square.

Issue #3 is stuffed with original PlayStation RPG coverage, and we're lucky enough to have been sent a copy so that we can tell you lot all about it. Right off the bat, it's clear that a lot of time, effort, and passion has been poured into this latest creation. Some colourful Xenogears fan art adorns the front cover, and the back is home to a lovingly drawn picture of Final Fantasy IX's cast.

Inside, we've got everything from features to reviews. It's a relatively small magazine - clocking in at 44 pages - but it's absolutely packed with writing. In contrast to many of the bigger printed publications of today, HyperPlay RPG doesn't fill its pages with fluff. Instead, we're treated to lengthy articles and a heck of a lot of information, making for an especially interesting read. It's also worth mentioning that the magazine's smaller size makes it a great travelling companion.

So, what's actually in this issue? Well, the biggest draw here is its huge Xenogears review, which is swiftly followed by an equally large Xenogears feature. Squaresoft's mech-touting RPG never actually released here in Europe, so reading all about it may prove to be an enlightening experience. It's exactly the kind of super in-depth stuff that you'd expect of a quality fan magazine.

Of course, you can't possibly bang on about classic PlayStation RPGs without mentioning Final Fantasy at least several times, so it's no surprise to see the franchise take up multiple pages. A feature on the series' top nine scenes caught our eye in particular, and needless to say, the memories came flooding back as we read through it.

Later on, Final Fantasy IX, Breath of Fire III, Vandal Hearts, and The Legend of Dragoon are all reviewed in detail. Again, the nostalgia levels are off the charts, and the reviews themselves are well written, offering some real insight into what makes each title tick. Across the entire publication, it's clear that the team take pride in their work, which is fantastic to see.

HyperPlay RPG #3 is a well made fanzine oozing with passion and some great writing. If you're a fan of PlayStation classics and you're keen to get your nostalgia on, then this PlayStation Special issue earns an easy recommendation.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we're off to rummage through our PSone collection...
