Activision really wants you to know that Call of Duty: WWII is going back to its roots. Today's livestream included enough utterances of the phrase "boots on the ground" to sink an aircraft carrier; the double-jumping exo-suits of more recent entries have been completely removed, and replaced by a more β for want of a better word β grounded experience. But what are the key things that you need to know about the first-person shooter?
It starts out with the Normandy landing
Is this a bit predictable now? Saving Private Ryan is almost 20 years old, so there are feasibly adults who aren't familiar with the infamous D-Day scene. Call of Duty: WWII will open with the iconic moment, figuratively starting the show with what can only described as a show-stopper. We see glimpses of the set-piece in the reveal trailer; we suspect this sequence is going to look seriously tasty on modern hardware.
The campaign's mostly about the Americans
Never in doubt, was it? Call of Duty: WWII's story will primarily focus on a squad of American soldiers. Activision wants to emphasise the sense of camaraderie between squaddies, meaning that there are moments of quiet exposition between the big gunfights, designed to build the relationship between buddies. Expect one (or all) of the supporting characters to die.
You will play as other characters, though
While the main thrust of Call of Duty: WWII's plot is all about the aforementioned squad, the title will take time to explore other aspects of the war. One section will see you play as a woman fighting for the French Resistance as part of the liberation of Paris. It doesn't sound like you'll be playing as the Germans at any point outside of multiplayer, however.
There'll be new features in multiplayer
Expect the staples of Call of Duty's multiplayer suite to make a return in WWII, but there will be new modes as well. War promises a more objectives-based experience, as teams battle asymmetrically to either defend or attack designated strong holds. There'll also be a new lobby named Headquarters, which you'll be able to explore alongside other players in real-time while you're waiting for a match.
Co-op will be dark and original
Yes, there'll be a co-op mode in Call of Duty: WWII β although Activision's keeping its details under lock and key for the time being. Apparently it'll be "dark" and "original". Nazi zombies are on lock, then, eh? Expect more to be revealed in the lead up to the title's release on 3rd November.
Are you liking the sound of Call of Duty: WWII? Will you be storming this shooter on launch day like the beaches of Normandy? Have your guns at the ready in the comments section below.

This has me interested but will definitely not pre order. It's been years since I bought a COD game. It will still be a twitch shooter though and I don't know how much they can change without effecting the eSports scene where most of their money is made from
The worst thing about COD campaigns is jumping around as different characters. To me it just comes across as though they lack the ability to tell a compelling story and instead decide on set pieces first and then force a narrative around those.
@kyleforrester87 That's my favourite thing, personally.
Where the Soviets at? That's all i want to know.
Dont get me wrong it looks good but I'm tired of an American wins cod story.
@get2sammyb Fair does! When I think of my favourite FPS's though, you've always been one character overcoming the odds. Half-Life, Wolfenstein, Doom..
Having said that I understand in a WW2 setting like this it makes sense to move between characters as it's dumb for one person alone to effectively win the war, such as in MoH. Still, personal preference. Just wish they would weave it all together a bit better. Or maybe I just need to pay more attention!
Sounds interesting, but I won't buy it. I haven't played a CoD since 4.
Nice to see them returning to a past setting, but it'll just be more of the same.
I wonder if they're going to pull the same crap they did last year and do a legacy edition world at war remastered?
Looked like every WW2 game ever - I know we haven't had one for a while but it could be any of the old ones just remastered....
I know I am old and maybe the kids will think its 'fresh' but I think it looked 'old' with a fresh coat of paint
Might be the first CoD I don't buy since 2007, hopefully multiplayer gameplay changes my mind and brings back memories of WaW...
That trailer just did not have anything interesting in it to me. Just felt like I'd been there and done that already. Still, we got some originality last year and people hated it so who knows, this one might sell really well.
The last CoD I played was World At War so I've got one eye on this. Whoever the main character is though, they won't be as good as Medal of Honor's one-man army Jimmy Patterson!
@BAMozzy yup. Medal of Honor Frontline perfected this fifteen years ago, anything that comes now is a tribute act, albeit a beautiful one. It might surprise and actually have some depth, and be good, though! I hope so, as a lot of teenagers will be getting some eduaction from it. No doubt it will be doomed to sell a gazillion copies and be immensely popular, as critical success is irrelevant to these behemoths. Fingers crossed it's a success anyway.
All aboard the Hype Train. November 3rd can't get here soon enough.
@B-I-G-DEVIL yeah, you can expect folks in the east to grumble about how "American ego reimagining history" and whatnot again, and one can see what pokes them towards such grumbling. XD Then again, Fiction isn't obliged to focus on any part of the history it's inspired by, and despite being technically on the interested side (my country, Belarus, was one hell of a war theater then, "hell" being no understatement for many during the occupation years), I account for the point that developers may be more interested in telling a WW2 story with characters and connections from THEIR country.
That said, I would certainly welcome seeing a CoD game explore the Soviet front as well. Battlefield series worked with those events and locales right back when it began, so that's certainly nothing impossible.
@kyleforrester87 this. they jump around so much and the story is so empty and un engaging.
It's absurd when you consider the amount of story's they have made in the past which is more telling of activision just caring about the sale numbers more than anything.
Sounds very Americanized.
I some how doubt there 4 player co-op will be Zombies, i think it'll be something totally new and different. The reason for this is we'll already have the 8 remaster Zombies maps, Zombies Chronicles.
@RedMageLanakyn I doubt it. For one thing W@W wasn't made by Sledgehammer. Second it would counterproductive to offer a remaster of a WWII game with CoD: WWII. The only reason they did with Infinite Warfare was because one game was "new" style CoD and the remaster was the "old" style.
"One section will see you play as a woman fighting for the French Resistance".
Honestly that's probably the most predictable thing about this whole reveal.
@Tasuki I was half kidding, although if they did do it, i wouldn't be surprised. Everyone is going to over saturate the market with WWII stuff again, might as well go full tilt and put a WWII remaster in a WWII reboot
Overall I'm very happy about it. I just hope it's not all set on the Western Front.
@Kyroki agreed on all accounts.
Yay, another WW2 CoD!
I'll pass, thanks.
I like the going back to historical warfare but I feel that they are just redoing past games, particularly with the Normandy landings. I didn't feel it was bringing much to the table in terms of exploring WW2. Of course, I am only going by the obligatory big budget cut scene trailer as opposed to gameplay etc.
I think an Eastern Front game with Russia would have been a far more interesting affair but then I am not really the target audience for this game anyway. Will be interested to see more footage. Maybe they'll have this at EGX in Sept!
part of the problem is no matter what era you set it in, or what look you give it, CoD has a very familiar twitchy floaty feel that's inescapable, and in some ways quite limiting. if i remember, CoD: Finest Hour had 32-player multiplayer on PS2 and xbox, and CoD 3 had 24-player modes. CoD used to experiment more with its multiplayer though that was all before Modern Warfare cemented the 6v6 formula and the attachments/perks/killstreaks rules. at the time it felt revolutionary, but everything since has been mostly minor adjustments, and it all got a bit staid for me. i'd like to see more weight to the character movement and solidity to the weapons, CoD's floaty soldier on acid feel is a bit incongruous with WW2 imo. also more innovation with its MP, like bigger game modes across larger maps, where it's not spawn/kill/insta-death every 5 seconds.
I'm really excited to find out who won WW2.
