To be fair to Hello Games, the last update to No Man's Sky was a major one, adding base building and a bit more purpose to the deep space adventure. And now the small Guildford-based studio has announced a second major patch, named the 'Path Finder' update. According to the studio, this will add a vehicle which you'll be able to use for ground-based exploration – but sadly it sounds like use of it will be limited to your home planet.
There's no word on when the patch will actually drop, but apparently it's coming soon. At this rate, the game may actually be worth playing in… Oh, a couple of years.

It sounds like the vehicle will only be for your home planet which is a bit disappointing as it would be more useful if you could use it on any planet.
@adf86 I've added that into the article.
I never did get the hate that smaller devs got, between this and the horrible way upon which disc jam has gone down today, for me I'd give them a bit more breathing space than the general gaming public gives these guys.
@adf86 LOL that is stupid AF. Those guys from Hello Games don't learn, I see
"pathfinder" update 😂 What an opportune time for that. Coincidence? Doubtful.
Bought it for cheap after the Foundation Update; stopped playing it after completing the pseudo-missions given by the aliens in my base.
The fact you can use the vehicle only on home planet would not be so bad once you get a frighter to use as a base.
Can't wait to buy this and play it once they have finished all these updates,
As time progresses, I lose more interest. There have always been better examples of NMS's original premise (Elite)... and I think it will be obsolete and superceded very soon, even on ps4.
I bought it at launch (not preorder), but traded next day for Overwatch. Thought I might rebuy at some point, but I'm not so sure any more.
Everytime I read about new updates to this, I am more than happy I traded it in the day after I bought it.
Even if this ended up as a free game on PS+ I still wouldn't go back to it
This is the Mariah Carey of games. Amazing technical ability, but lacking in genuine heart and soul.
I'm interested at how long they can afford to keep this going. Assuming this launches now, in another 5 months it will be a year anniversary. No one is buying it anymore, the sales it garnered were pretty much all launch sales and the price dropped pretty quickly. Just interested how they are funding this?
@Rudy_Manchego it sold absolutely tons at launch (both PS4 and PC) and HG are a small team so it makes sense. To be honest they promised they would carry on working on the game for free before they launched anyway its not that surprising.
The improved graphics and terrain and creature generation they introduced to this game were great additions. I liked base building too, but the crafting was a bit too grindy. Maybe if I'd started it before I'd already sunk 30 hours into the game, I could've gotten into it more. I'm still rooting for these guys.
@get2sammyb My son started playing the finally finished and released Lego Worlds on PC/Steam yesterday - he bought early access about 2 years ago when it became available - and it was really funny b/c even though I've never played NMS I have to believe it's similar. Start on a small inner planet as a space traveler who's spaceship has crashed (also Pikmin like), collect gold bricks to fix your ship, move on to the next planet, more gold bricks, keep going spiraling out of the middle of the system until you reach the outer planet. OK I guess know that I think about it that's technically the opposite of NMS go to the middle but close enough.
Why start with 'to be fair to Hello Games..' then end with a snipe? Ouch, man..
Nah I think I'll pass.
This game could really benefit from HDR.
I bought a used copy a few months ago at a GS sale for like $16.
Seems like an interesting experience, something different.
i think most players would be happy with an actual ending first
@kyleforrester87 Yeah it did sell better than expected at launch but it is dead in the water now. They may be a small team but they have to pay bills and they are doing it on a game that no one is going to buy moving forward and even less are going to revisit. There is financial sense in supporting a product with an audience that wants more content or that might encourage more sales (or if you want to keep players coming back for the next in the franchise). Most people, I think, are done with NMS and the savings in the bank will run out sooner rather than later.
@Rudy_Manchego Steam had 212620 people playing at once on launch day, so for PC alone they took in at least £85 million day one considering that number doesn't represent 100% of the day 1 sales. I expect PS4 was even higher.
Apparantly 212620 was at least 46% higher than any other 2016 game on Steam, so yes - while it has certainly dropped off in popularity significantly it was highly front loaded. They made a ton off NMS.
Edit:
http://www.vgchartz.com/game/84663/no-mans-sky/
This website says 1.86m sales to date, don't know how credible that is mind you. But at an average cost of, what? £25 per game, being conservative as most of those would have been sold for nearer £40 - That's £465M at least
My feeling now is they are doing the work to ensure they can be taken seriously in the future.
This game now runs at 60fps! At least on the pro. Not sure about the base PS4
Graphics are noticeably improved on base PS4. Textures look much better. I envy those who haven't played the game since launch. The leap in presentation alone must be pretty dramatic.
Already uninstalled it but it's nice that hello games still supporting it. I think I will install it again when I have ps4 pro.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah, they have to do this if they want to be taken seriously again for their next big game.
I wonder if any other devs are looking at this to see how to get an early access game onto a system that doesn't allow early access?
@BowTiesAreCool To be fair, if any game is priced at the AAA range then they are fair game for not living up to that pricing. There are a load of games similar to this that cost a fraction of the price and still supported, yet are better. Even without that, the fact that the studio went quiet for three months as soon as people found out the product they got wasn't that close to the product advertised, instead of engaging with their customers means a lot of the hate they get is deserved.
