Mafia III may not have set the open world genre alight as was intended, but by most accounts, it's not that bad overall. The game's obviously been out for a while now, but coinciding with the release of its first expansion, a playable demo has hit the PlayStation Store. If you've had your eye on Mafia III but the lukewarm reception was enough to put you off, this might be a good opportunity to try it out for yourself.
Indeed, the sandbox shooter got hammered for its repetitive gameplay, but the story's supposed to be pretty good, and the 1960s setting is apparently well realised. Again, the demo could be worth a shot if you can be bothered with the download. Any progress that you make in the demo will carry over to the full game, if you decide to buy it.

I'm definitely gonna give the first DLC a go. The game was frustrating as hell because its potential is clear to see and what it does right is excellent. The main game just had far too many bugs, and needed a huge pair of editorial scissors in the back room to cut the repetitiveness and produce a far more complete experience.
I haven't stepped back into New Bordeaux since they've updated some things through patches and am looking forward to seeing what they do with the planned DLC.
@roe Sounds a bit like Andromeda, to be honest. It's always way more frustrating when you know a game could (and probably should) be a lot better than it actually is.
I was looking forward to this game after enjoying mafia 2, the rubbish reviews put me off purchasing, glad there's now a demo to see for myself
Nice. Will definitely give it a try. Wouldn't there have been a demo for watchdogs 2, I would've never purchased it after the huge disappointment WD1 was. I wish more games would offer demos for people to make up their own mind rather than relying on reviews and YouTube alone.
I'll give it a crack. Cheers.
Is this game worth a try?
I'm a big fan of demos, and while I prefer to get them a few weeks before the game releases I could see why from a business standpoint 2 -3 weeks after release is probably optimal, after Day 1 buyers pay and before people forget about it. But now? This is in PS+ territory.
This is honestly the first I've read about this game even getting DLC, so that can't be good. Does explain the way late demo, glad I took the time to read the article.
So by now what costs more, the game or the DLC? Surely someone has seen this in the $10 bargain bin.
Worth it for anyone on the fence as it's a decent title it's you can get it for under £20.
finished this in January and I- personally- would recommend you don't waste your time with it
Cool, I'll check it out. I'm still interested in it due to the setting, time period, music and supposedly strong story. Hopefully they will be able to excel in the more story-focused DLCs and then release some sort of definite edition down the line.
I've never played a Mafia game but was very interested in this one until the rubbish reviews came in which put me off altogether. However, now there is a demo I'll try it out and see for myself..
Am I the only one who finds it weird that they're releasing a demo now? Also, it sold surprisingly well as I recall.
As of writing the damn demo isn't available on Steam.
...good going 2k.
Playable demo before release? Not the way games are now shipped unfinished. A Mafia 3 demo released before the game released or when the game released probably would of been a disaster. Where the Mafia 2 demo had a finished game quality and spiked gamers interests.
After patching i found Mafia 3 fun to play, an interesting created world, awesome music, and less repetitive than reviewers reported. Basically i found it better than i thought it would be after watching the trailers.
The empty world is made a thousand times worse by not having fast travel. Mafia 2 has no fast travel but you can pump gas and stand on corpses and junk.
I keep saying to myself that I need to finish the game, and I always intend to, but something else comes along and pushes it aside. I loved the game for a while but the repetition inevitably creeps in sooner or later, and when it does, its hard to see beyond that and focus on the great story. Obviously a story demo only shows that good side of the game and anyone who plays it won't experience the grind unless they get the full title.
I love this game not finished it as other games came out but I cannot wait on the first dlc
No, if they create a mode where I can skip all the drab side mission b*ll*cks I'd be interested
..Aaand the demo wont download.
But it is available now.
..I don' t even.
edit: oh NOW it finally downloads
bloody thing
